Appreciated Northstar, very few things I enjoy in life more than Wildlife Photography, Photographing Leopards for me is possibly what Photographing Eagles is to Gary Samples, I'de love to Photograph Eagles as well as Gary, but I tend to find they move a little too quick for me, so it's Leopards, with the occasional Wild Dog, Lion or Polar Bear.

I see. Yes for printing its good to over sharpen a little.  Just curious as I notice the compression algorithms on these sites do play with my mind sometimes.  Difficult to make comparisons when everything gets compressed by 50%.

Excellent shots.  I enjoy checking back in to see what else you have posted.

These are great shots but even after looking at the full JPG, they all seem to be over sharpened to me...more so after the web downsizing.  Did you sharpen these or is this just an affect of compression uploading to the forums?

Hi "Eastwind", Guilty I'm afraid, although I try not to over sharpen, what I post is generally the file that I print, so it's had a little more sharpening than I would normally apply so that it Prints well. But I appreciate your comment and I tend to sharpen to what I feel looks right (In On One), then back off a little, sometimes/often I don't back off enough.

Well, I really appreciate your heads up, made me go back and actually look at what I'de posted, realised the posted files were being way over sharpened, so reviewed my process, found I was sharpening in On One (All Ok), then exporting the file from LR4, but had the "Sharpen for Print" box ticked (Not Good), then resizing in On One Resize also with the Sharpening Box ticked (Really bad Move), so have fixed all that & file now sharpened in On One only, again, Thanks for the heads up.

Londolozi Northern South Africa, Group of 18 Wild Dogs came into the area, Love these Guys, they are the 2nd most endangered Predator in Africa, but amazing to watch when hunting, total group effort, fast & extremely efficient, not often do they miss on a Kill, first animals to get to eat are always the old, lame & young, unlike the Lions, which are Beautiful, but total Thugs.

when you post to canon rumors it makes the shots look over sharpened the same thing was happing to me. shoots posted  any where else but looked fine!  so now when  shots are going here I under sharpen

Hi Gary, yes, have realised that now thanks to helpful comments here.

Love your Eagle shots, I've tried to do a little myself with the new 600 f/4 V2 I have, but I'm not generally quick enough to keep the damn things in focus, needs a lot of practise I think, the Leopards, Lion & Wild Dog at least play the game & move a little slower for me.

Mating Leopards, not sure if I'm allowed to Post this sort of thing here, may upset the faint hearted.

These Guys go at it for 4 to 7 days, pretty well non stop, Female instigates all action, male just does the job & tries to seem nonchalant & get some rest between bouts, they Mate approximately every 3 to 10 minutes, for a WEEK, I have new found respect for Male Leopards, these Boys are Tough !!

1Dx 300f/2.8 L V2, shot @ f5.6 & 1/320th late afternoon, Northern South Africa Mala Mala March 2013.

It was interesting to note when I eventually got home from this trip what Lenses I most used, I carried with me the 24-70f/2.8 L V2, 70-200f/2.8 L V2, 300f/2.8 L V2, 400f/2.8 L V2 & my lovely new 600f/4 L V2.

Hardly used the 24-70 at all, 70-200 mostly at 200 end & 30% of my shots, 600 hardly at all, 400 around 15%, 300 50% of my shots and at between f4 & f/8 mostly, so roll on the seemingly Mythical Canon 200-400f/4 (x1.4), I wonder if Canon will ever get this Lens to market, hard to fathom considering Nikon have had a reasonable 200-400f/4 in production for 10 Years ??

Hi Gary, Thanks, I think Leopards are for me what perhaps Eagles are for you (Only the Leopards are Generally easier to shoot, except perhaps at night time), Love everything about them. The 600f/4 V2 is my first 600, and this was it's first outing, didn't get too much use on this trip as the Bush was reasonably thick in March, but I'm off to Tanzania in June, then Svalbard for Polar Bears in September, which is what the 600 was purchased for, lovely Lens but really only just starting to get to know it, the 300f/2.8 & 400f/2.8 V2 Lenses have been my main stay to date, cant fault these Lenses in any way, well, perhaps with the exception of Price, but I firmly believe you mostly get what you pay for.

This Guy is called the "Hip Scar Male", obviously because he has a bad scar on his Hip, but I have never seen another Lion with Eyes like this One, blazingly bright yellow, very strange, he is One large male of a Coalition of 4 Brothers that happily share a large area and several prides of Females, very Handsome bunch of Guys, his Brothers don't share the same Eyes as this guy, and although they are all Brothers, Only one of them has a Black Mane, and he is the Alpha of the group and a complete and Total Thug, but very cool just the same.

One thing you can almost Guarantee with Leopards, follow them long enough & they will "Elevate", like Cheetahs they cant resist Tree Branches, Logs, Rocks, complete Posers.

Lovely pose! Looks totally at ease. No tension anywhere in the body. Look at the paws too. You must have put him at ease. In complete contrast tho the other picture where that one was sizing you up - possibly for a meal
