I did a cross country meet today, and even downsized big time, the 1DX/300 f/2.8L I IS combo works pretty well.  This shot was at f/4, 1/1000s, ISO 640 not cropped too much:

Shot this yesterday. 1D X and 500mm L II: ISO 3200, f5.6 @ 1/50 sec.
It was almost dark, had little hope but shot anyhow. Lightroom 4.2 and a little sharpening in CS6.

Pileated Woodpecker eating a termite, shot 3 days ago in total shade. 1D X, 500mm L II and 1.4 Extender: ISO 1600, f6.3 @ 1/800 sec.

BTW: The Black Bear sow and Pileated Woodpecker where shot within 50 feet of each other.
