Another reason I posted the shot I did, is that with the face-recognition feature activated with the AF system, you get a perfectly focused face shot, even at 1/500s at f/2.8, from a distance.  It's actually a much more powerful tool than I first realized.  You will absolutely love it.

so do you select the point for it to start?i am going to practice with it tomorrow at a santa run so many runners together close would the system get confused be interesting to see how it goes so far though seems awesome :-)

Here's what I do.  Runners and players?  Select the AF point one or preferrably two spots above the center.  This way the face is at focal point and the feet are still in the frame.  Active face recognition and fire away.  Don't worry about going out of focus, the camera will pick it up.  I'd say practice.

Some other shooters I know select multiple AF points and like you say, yes you can pick the starting AF point and let it skip around as it picks up faces.  The only reason I do what I mentioned is to use the dual-cross type AF sensors and usually in the sports I shoot, only one player at a time is sufficient. 

Good luck and have fun practicing!  Read the manual with camera in hand and try different things.

thanks for the tips :-)  i had a read at the manual so it recognises colour and faces it will be interesting to see how it will cope with all those santas lol i will have fun anyway no pressure not a paid shoot so i will see how it goes :-)

When I first read about that feature - I thought it would be a "must have" for wedding photogs! Just lock the bride's face in on the processional, recessional, or dance floor and let the camera track while you wait for those perfect shutter moments... What a tool!

bdunbar  - what AF case # are you using for basketball?

Case #2 seems to work best, not because it is the best tracking case, but simply for basketball players often times run in front and out of the frame of the player I am tracking, and this case seems to ignore the other player pretty well.  However, in low light, I've had it not work sometimes.  Low light is very frustrating, but if you can shoot at 1/500, f/2.8, ISO 4000, you're doing pretty well and the AF usually has no problem.
