I've been a long time viewer of this site, but only recently decided to begin posting, I enjoy mostly the wonderful "giving" of people on this site that simply offer advise with no expectation of return, the only disappointment is the unfortunate inevitability of a few who feel it necessary to drop buckets on people's best intentions, the recent "appalling notion" comment springs to mind, seems it's had the effect of people not posting 1Dx shots for a while, with the brave exception of Crapking, and for the record I loved the Dog into the Pool shot from Studio1930, and your comments, always helpful & positive.

So, another Monkey shot 1Dx, 135f/2 Lens @ f5.6 & 1/160th.

Something a little more pleasant, while not panning, I did use IS Mode 1 :), though not needed in the first three, but definitely helped with the last....

crapking...Great shots!

Also, I see you shot these at 1/1250, but you mention you used IS mode 1.  Do you feel like you need IS on when shooting at 120mm and 1/1250th?  Or maybe a better question, is it better to turn it off when not needed? ...or, does it even matter?

I'm just curious to hear your opinion on the subject.  Anybody else have an opinion on IS on or off relative to shutter speed?

There are a million answers to the IS on or off for faster shutter speeds and even Canon has changed their recommendations over the years (and levels of IS now available).  I think that is a subject best made for a new thread or a private message as it could get out of hand fast in this 1DX thread.

Just my 2 cents.

Hello all this is my first post.  Awesome forum here.

Gary, great shots.  Besides your shooting skills, it looks like you have some serious "Ace Ventura" one-with-the-animals skills!  Great work.

One question out of curiosity: does this site tend to over-sharpen images people post?  Maybe some of what that cook a few pages back was talking about is related to over-sharpening???

Any way, love the images people are posting with the 1Dx, starting to think about selling a kidney.....

Cheers,

Well said 8). Like you stated, it wasn't your reply's content that was wrong (even an amateur like me knew the difference between IS modes 1 and 2), but the way it was stated. I think the reason this forum is so good is that most of the photogs with experience and expertise share that knowledge and skill with what we call the "aloha" spirit in Hawaii. In other words, in a positive and constructive manner. I look forward to more of your posts in the future. :)

I don't know what the site does, but they definitely look more "pixely" when uploaded, yes.

On vacation, for this shot, I was in a 12 man zodiac in a choppy bay so I left in on.  :)
Pretty much leave it on all the time, unless doing portraits on a tripod.  Most of my sports shooting is either handheld or on a monopod and I see no reason / advantage to turn it off.  sometimes I drop shutter speed to 1/80 for candids to lower ISO so rather than fumble with the switch, I leave it on.
