Did some testing of the 1DX in blowing and/or reflecting snow.  Even with the temperamental 85L, the 1DX focus was fast and spot on!  Some blue sky, white snow f/11 shots were easy as well with the 1DX.  Love this camera.  ;D

(Used 85L, 70-200 f/2.8 IS II & 200 f/2)

Glad to see my dog is not the only one that goes nuts over snow~

Nice shots!

I had done some similar shooting with my dog in the snow while it was snowing and I got a lot of shots where the AF picked up on the snowflakes that were in the air, rather than the dog, resulting in an oof shot.   Maybe because my dog has a dark coat as a backdrop to the white snowflakes?   Anyway, the situation tricked my 1dx af settings, did you have this happen to you at all while shooting your dog while it was snowing?

Northstar,

The cropped one of course.  I had two games to shoot, each with about 80 photos and had a deadline to hit for photo gallery.  I'd love to sit and go through some of my shots and do a lot of post-processing.  That photo is 72 ppi for the newspaper.  I would like to go back to the raw shot, and process at 240ppi and do some pp.  Thanks.

It's a great shot with the action, ball, and facial expressions, so when I saw it I wondered why you had left it "wide"...but I get it, those deadlines come fast after a game.

It did have a few OOF shots due to snow flakes, but only a couple out of hundreds.  I have the AF tweaked to ignore temporarily closer objects and I think I was running case 4 with single focus point and 4 point expansion.  Interestingly enough, the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II was the worse lens for popping OOF quickly and then back into focus quickly.  The 85L and the 200 f/2 tracked much better.  I think the 85L is slower and the 200 f/2 is smarter.  ;)

Ok cool...and you wrote that you were shooting at f11 ...so that widens the doff as well....helps quite a bit.

Only the blue sky shots were f/11.  All of the others were near wide open (f/1.4-f/2.2)  :)
