Lycoan Pictus (Wild Dog) 2nd most endangered Predator in Africa, unfortunately.

North of Kruger National Park on the Border with Mozambique.

1Dx 200-400f/4, Shot @ 560mm f/5.6 & 1/400th ISO640

Like the brokeh look of your 200-400 eml. Most of your pics with it seem to be max length with converter, and here it appears to be giving a pleasing, quite artistic brokeh, almost like a painting.

Hi Sporgon, yes, Im impressed with the Lens at f/4 (400) & f/5.6 (560), the majority of my Shots were on this trip at those ranges and f stop, the Bokeh I felt was as good as the 400f/2.8 V2 Lens at the same ranges and f/stops, the advantage with the 400f/2.8 of course was low light, dawn & dusk lower ISO larger f/stop. But for wildlife I will likely leave the 400f/2.8 Home in future, take the 300f/2.8 when I feel I may need Low Light f/2.8 & the sheer versatility of the 200-400 will outweigh the loss of a wider f/stop.

Hi Gary, Thanks, and I must say I was impressed with the 200-400, but at 12k I was likely going to feed myself to the Cheetahs if I wasn't. I did take the 400f/2.8 and did quite a bit of comparison shooting, at 400f/4 & 400f/5.6 I'm really not able to see any difference in sharpness or Bokeh, But, I would say the 400f/2.8 is slightly quicker to lock on Focus, which makes sense when you consider the 400f/2.8 is viewing during Focus @ f/2.8 where the 200-400f/4 is viewing @ f/4 or f/5.6. The 200-400 will certainly be my main Lens in any future trips, the sheer versatility cant be beaten, but, I do like the low light ability of that f/2.8

This Image gives some idea of the Bokeh difference between the 200-400f/4 and the 400f/2.8 @ f/2.8.

I must say I prefer the 200-400f/4 @ f/4 and f/5.6 as well as the 400f/2.8 @ f/4 & f/5.6.

The f/2.8 Bokeh to me seems too washed out, no slight detail at all, perhaps in some situations that's preferred, but I tend to like just a little detail in the background.

Lovely pictures! Was this shot hand held or with a monopod?

Hi RPT, Almost all my 200-400 shots are from a Bean Bag attached to a Manfroto Clamp, I did also have my Wimberley attached to my RRS Safari Monopod Bracket, but used it very little on this trip.

Perhaps 15% of my 200-400 shots were Hand Held, I found Hand Holding the Lens about the same as the 400f/2.8, it can be done for short periods, but it gets Old pretty quickly and I consider myself pretty Fit and I'm big in the Arms, the Wrists start to go first though, shooting from the beanbag seemed to work well, I had one attached each side of the Front Row of the seat, with the Monopod/Wimberley set up in the Middle. I always Safari with my own dedicated vehicle & Guide so front row always, my Son takes the 2nd Row and there's no fighting, much. A fate worse than Death would be sharing a Vehicle on Safari, I got offered a trip recently to Mala Mala & share with 2 Russian Lesbians, Potential entertainment factor was high, but I was pretty sure they could whip my arse and put me in the back seat, so I passed.

More Lion Cubs on this trip than I've ever seen before, 26 Cubs in different areas, fortunately different Mothers with 2 to 4 Cubs in each litter.
