back on the sports scene...american football on a beautiful eve.

I've thought about the 200-400mm lens for sports, but the F4 is a factor.   When I shoot a game like this I realize that having the 2.8 is critical, it keeps me from going above ISO 3200.

ISO 3200 is the limit for me when I'm shooting action shots in poor light on the 1DX.

ISO 3200 is the limit for me when I'm shooting action shots in poor light on the 1DX.

Interesting, many people are regularly using much higher, I recall Andy Rouse, a very famous UK wildlife photographer, being happy at 10,000 even for printing and publication. What is your regular output size and medium?

I am still on 1Ds MkIII's and with the latest post processing noise software I am very happy at 800 and content most of the time at 1600, I'd have expected the 1Dx to be much better than 1-11/2 stops better than my old bodies. Just interested.

Private...it's probably a little bit of "to each their own", but I remember reading EML writing recently on this post that he doesn't like going above iso 1600 (if I remember right) and that surprised me a little bit because I regularly go to 3200 ISO.

Here's a 100% crop at 800x800 pixels, RAW, at ISO 4000.  Nothing done but slight exposure bump and a pass through Nik sharpener pro and Nik define.   From the same game (later in the game when the sun was down)  It's not terrible, but it's starting to go downhill.

I will go to 4000 on occasion, but I really prefer to stay at 3200 or lower if I think I might need a larger print of the shot.

The second is the same exact editing but a much bigger crop.  As you can see, it's certainly usable for a smaller print and online....I maybe should've clarified my first post in regards to image size as it relates to high ISO.

Thanks!  It certainly is a great time.  I never had any idea how much fun it was going to be to be a dad.  Every year just seems to get better and better!

I enjoyed your football pic's - I had a chance to photograph a college soccer game last year and really enjoyed it.

ps...Win The Day!    ;)

Thanks for comments on the cycling shots.

I had a hard time focusing , I tried Case 3 since they were flying out of that corner, but often got the ears and shoulder instead of the tip of the nose, I guess it's because my expansion points like their bright colorful shirts instead of the darker low contrast face. I also didn't find a way to get a bettet tracking so ended up with quite a bit oof. Any tips?

Don't you 1DX shooters get facial recognition as part of that high-end AF system? Would that have helped? I was drooling over that option for portraits/weddings on the move...

Yes, we do, but that only works in "all focus points autoselect" I believe, and every time I try using Zone or all of them I very quickly change back as the focus is all over the place and at f2 200mm 2,5 cm off means completely useless image.

But I will try again, my son have a new kick-bike and while he doesn't quite have the same tempo, I'm sure I will fairly easy see if the face detection helps or just make it to erratic. Thanks for the tip!

From a local benefit show I stumbled onto this evening, cropped to this size, 1/50 f/2.8 ISO 2000.  Jim
See what I see: 6500K, 160 cd/m^2, ICC 2, gamma 2.2.
