What should I buy? 7D or wait for entry level FF?
« on: July 23, 2012, 04:26:12 AM »
Hi,

I've been considering buying a 7D for sometime and nearly did so over the weekend.  That was until I heard the rumor of a FF.  FF digital has always been something I'd never considered given the price tag however if there is an entry level then it might be an option.  I'm really just an enthusiast - just take lots of pictures on holiday and of our kids.  I've currently got a 400D and use the following lenses 70-200L F4, 15-85, 50mm 1.8.  While I like the 400D I'm looking for more features and find the body a bit small a sometimes cumbersome to use - I use to love the wheel on my old Canon 50 film.

Any advice appreciated.

thanks.

Grabbing FF means selling at least 15-85. You'll be amazed with 70-200F4 on a FF. If you will not miss the extra reach, then I'd go FF on your place. Check what you'll loose on a long end by setting 70-200 at 125mm. The shortest focal you'll achieve will be 50 on your nifty-fifty - equivalent of 30mm you have now. So you'll loose some 20mm at the short end.
Crucial for FF are lenses. If you intend to invest in lenses, I'd go FF as it would be newer technology, than aging 7D.

Why not invest in lenses right now, instead of choosing an old (7d) vs unsure (entry FF) and see what future bodies will be like? You'll gain more from good lenses than from the body.

I'm in a similar boat. I have a 450D and am looking forward to replacing it...  everytime i think i will, i end up buying more glass...  I'm now buying EF lenses on the basis that one day i will get a FF...

Hi, why do you say I'll need to get rid of the 15-85.  This is a fairly new lens (Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM)?

Because you are not able to use EF-S lenses on FF cameras. No matter what the construction of the new FF will be, it is physically impossible to make a proper use of an EF-S lens on a Canon FF camera (if the latter is to be compatible with other EF lenses of course :) ).
