A couple bits of advice beyond the already great suggestions. I have had both new and refurbished cameras and I cannot tell the difference. If you can save yourself some money with a refurbished unit, do so. Put your money into the glass, not a new camera.
Similarly, I have bought new and used glass. I cannot tell the difference because I have bought very clean copies of used lenses. If you can save money and buy used lenses, do so. People misstate the condition of lenses on ebay. If you can inspect the lens before buying, this is highly preferable.
There were a couple suggestions for the 40mm pancake. I just got it and it is as sharp as my $2,000+ lenses. For $150, it is a steal. At f/2.8, it is moderately fast.
