August Timeframe? An anonymous tipster said the next Canon DSLR announcement will be in August. They think it’ll be the 5D Mark III.

I asked about June, and I’m told nothing is slated for that month.

Along with the 5D3, a lens and flash announcement is said to be expected.

CR’s Take The NAB announcements prove the issues in Japan are not impeding product announcements for the time being. I don’t see a spring announcement for the 5D Mark III as likely, though something else could be.

Anyone here know Canon's modus operandi with lag time between announcement and shipment? If they announce in August, would they ramp production up by July/August for shipments in Sept/October?

My 3 year extended warranty on my 5D MK II expires in early December, so I'm ready for a new model. 

I ordered my 5d MK II the day they were announced (from Adorama) and got mine from the first shipment early in December, about a 2-3 month wait.  I paid $100 for the 3 yr extended warranty, but its never had any sort of issue.

I know everyone is wishing for this. I just still don't see how this is going to happen, not until 2012 next year maybe around sept. (2013) would be the abs.

I know speculation is all fun, but for the folks who want a 5d mkii but are holding out for a 5d mkIII it's alright to buy it

Bodies and lenses are made in different factories and use pretty much different components.  You cannot stop building bodies and therefore  produce more lenses. 

The lens factory was damaged, but is beginning to startup, and the body factory is going as well.  It will be tougher for the lens factory due to power shortages.

Sounds to me like the earliest we'll see a shipping model 5Diii is Nov/Dec of this year.

I have one comment to make on this...

If the earthquake has seriously impacted Nikon more than it has Canon and it will push Nikon's product release dates further out into the future than they otherwise would have and Canon are not impacted in the same way then there may be an advantage for Canon to deliver its new products sooner, giving them more time in the market place without any competition from Nikon.

So maybe the earthquake will disrupt things in ways that nobody anticipated...

... which is to say that maybe the product announcements and release dates have changed more since the start of the year and the earthquake than just a few lenses being pushed back a bit.

Without a doubt there will be unanticipated outcomes from all of this. I just wish canon would hurry up and get its mojo back. Something that will take nikon 2 years to catch up to. Hoping for 24-30 mpx high iso, clean up to 6400 , and fast.

Canon lenses are in my book still on the whole stronger. The super teles mtfs are off the charts. And the ts-e's are quite nice. 70-200 2.8 is II is a dream. Still waiting on a similar treatment for the 24-70. Selling organs for the new 200-400 with built in 1.4x. Nikon's advantage is its wide zoom. And of course its d3s and d3x.

I have one comment to make on this...

I know what you mean about the 'mojo'.
The last big hitter was the 7D back in 2009. Has been a loong time since then and nikon have the d3x and d3s on top of canon's offerings in the pro market and the D7000 is in line with the 7D at a more competitive price. The sony sensors are on top of canon at the moment in the low noise and dynamic range.

Let's hope we have a superb offering in the works that isn't just a video camera in a dslr body...
