Fantastic shots!!

I was NOT so lucky with my hummingbird shot.  I looked out the kitchen window this morning and saw a hummingbird zigging and zagging about.  I had the 1DX and 24-105L lens in my kitchen, but nothing else.  And, it was POURING outside.  So I aimed and fired out the kitchen window, thru the glass, and you have to admit that despite the mediocre image, this was a true verification of the AF system on the 1D X.

Yeah, the AF on the 1DX is phenomenal. So lightening quick -- especially on the 70-200 L IS II (a bit slower on my old 28-135 mm EF).

WOW, that humming bird shot is terrific.

Nice shots. Did you use AWB on the sleeping Koala shot? It looks a bit yellowish, but very clear given the 10,000 ISO. I shoot with a 7D and still use a small Lastolite mid-tonal grey card for custom WB, but I guess that given you were still in TV mode @ 1/500s you were not waiting around to finesse your settings. I took the liberty of looking at it in PS and choose Curves, selected the grey eyedropper and popped it on the Koala's head and hey presto the pic looked even better. Amazing definition for such high ISO.

DB, I did use AWB. The koala was sleeping under a very warm lamp. The color in the photo is actually correct. Like you, I played with the WB (though in LightRoom). While it definitely looks more "normal" with the koala grey, in the end, I decided to keep it overly warm as (right or wrong that's the way it looked.

To that end, the AWB on the 1DX is absolutely fantastic.  I tested it out last night again.  In tungsten lighting, there were no green bands in the shadows like on the 5D3's AWB.  The 5D3 is still leaving a bit of greenish tint shadowing.  And, I metered off a styrofoam cup and got a higher color temp that way vs. AWB in the entire scene.  I think for basketball and volleyball this year I'll probably just grab a styrofoam cup real quick, meter the color temp in the gym before the game, set the temp in custom WB and be done with it.  Pretty useful trick thanks to TrumpetPower.  That green banding can be very annoying.

While we're on the subject of 1d X and WB.

I use a Color Checker Passport to calibrate my colors. However, using the 1d X and sample off the built-in grey card, I'm suppose to get highly accurate WB to use and sample the color checker, but it just turns out VERY warm and orange no matter how I expose the greycard. Anyone else tried this? I haven't tried another greycard, but it always worked with the 5d2.

Knowing my aim I probably wasn't even on the hummingbird
