Great nightphotography comparisons: 1Dx, 1DIV, 5D3, 5D2

Good review and interesting statement for those who hadn't experience shooting with 1D bodies:

One odd thing I’ve noticed before, now definitely in this test- there’s a big difference in how the 5D series and 1D series interprets shadows. The 5D2 notoriously expresses shadow detail with a purple hue and the 5D3 shows this trend still continues; whereas the 1D4 has to be pushed to its limits before the purple shows up in the shadows. I thought this was mostly due to the crop sensor excluding the lens edges, but the 1Dx- full frame- follows the trend of the 1D4 by not degrading shadows with purple hues.

I was intrigued by that same statement. Its a very curious thing, and I think, if Canon is doing that intentionally, they are really shooting themselves in the foot. The key competition is no longer skimping on IQ at ANY level...if Canon keeps insisting that their customers shell out the megabucks for such a basic thing as clean shadows, and people learn of that fact, they deserve to lose customers...

If you look at the OOF building roof on a good-quality monitor you'll be able to see segments of 2 slightly different colors. Interesting if it might be somehow connected to the issue mentioned there. This is ISO 25600 shot, so I won't be surprised if something similar happens at lower ISOs on lower-end cameras (due to hardware limitation, for example; just my assumption).

All I heard till now are only statements, that 1D bodies give better colors and better flexibility in what you can do with those in post. It'll be great if someone smart comes here and shares his experience on different camera bodies as I am not able to investigate this by myself

P.S. Those differences can be caused by shadows from trees or something else, so don't take this too serious

You're right about the shadows on that shot for sure.  I however, cannot devote the time unfortunately to see if it can be corrected or not, or if any of that shot can be completely corrected.  I had 75 photos to process quickly and unfortunately all we can do is view the IQ at face value.  If you do have the time, I am more than willing to give you the RAW file.  Just let me know if you'd like it.
