Wide lens for full frame body!
« on: August 25, 2012, 09:38:54 PM »
Hi

I currently own the Canon 60D, and thinking of switching to full frame (maybe the 5d mk ii or mk iii) by the end of this year. I own a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 and it is by far my most favorite lens to date. I have a 24-70L from Canon, a 50mm 1.8 II as well. I was wondering if you folks could point me to a wide lens fit for full frame. The 16-35 L from Canon is just way beyond my budget. Is the 17-40L sharp enough? Or is there an adapter that I can fit on my tokina so that it works fine with a full frame body? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What are you shooting? If you are doing landscapes and stop down to f/8-f/16 the 17-40 will give similar results to the 16-35. If you are shooting at f/4 you will get more quality by paying twice as much for the 16-35.

I don't know the Tokina but expect it is a "crop camera only" lens like Canon's EF-S lenses. You can't adapt it to a FF body without it cropping the corners on the image.

I went with the 16-35 II for the better corner performance and the extra stop of light.

The price of 17-40 is about half of 16-35, but if you shoot from f4 to 5.6. you gonna spend alot of time in PP.

It comes down to what you shoot and at what aperture(s); stopped down you'll get similar performance from the two. I'd suggest save a bit longer and invest in the 16-35 - it's more versatile esp with that one stop faster aperture.

Cheers
