« on: September 20, 2012, 03:02:30 AM »
I found a used G1x from Adorama for about 599.99

Should I go for the G1x or wait for the G15?

If you're not a sports photographer or macro photographer, go for G1X.  It still has one of the best IQ for non-interchangeable lens compacts.

I have a G12 and the lens is scratched. That's because the "doors" at the front don't protect properly and if you have it in your pocket and something leans against the door you get a scratch. A small scratch does impact (unlike large lens). It would cost alot to repair. The G1X at least has a cover.
The lens sticks out alot more on the G1X.
I'd go for the G1X if I was upgrading.

I guess that the Adorama sale on the G1X is over.  On Sunday, I bought the $799 bundle deal they had which included printer, and software along with a $400 rebate. (Its back up to $1288 now)
This came out to $399 net, and I can sell the printer for $250 and the software for $30, so after thhat I paid about $120 for it.  If I like it, I'll sell the G11 I now have for about $300, and end up with $150 or more back from the deal.
Unless you are desperate, keep an eye out for more deals like that as the holidays approach.
I hope my camera did not get destroyed by the storm. Adorama shows it as pending, and shipping is likely to be delayed for a few days.  I'm in no hurry though.

Don't forget to get a close-up macro lens if you're also into macro.  It'll greatly help your G1X get some macro capability comparable to your G11.

I've the G1x and a G12. I upgraded to the G1x for the IQ and am not disappointed. The G15 has a closer macro, but one can easily purchase a macro lens or filters. The G1x is not going to fit in your trouser pocket and the G15 will. Thought about replacing the G12 with a G15 for when I wish pocket carry, but the lack of an articulated screen has been holding me back.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
