Three Canon Lens Masters Pick Their Favourite Lenses

Three Canon Lens Masters Pick Their Favourite Lenses

By Canon Rumors | March 23, 2017 | Canon Lens Rumors

DPReview asked three Canon lens masters at the Utsunomiya lens factory to name their favourite lens designs (as well as their first). One of the responses may surprise you.

  • Masato Okada: Deputy Chief Executive of Image Communication Products and Operation
Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM – “For me I’d have to say the 11-24mm F4L USM, because when launched, it allowed the widest angle possible on a full frame with no distortion.”
  • Kenichi Izuki: Plant Manager
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM – “My favorite, which I truly remember because it was so hard to design, was the original Canon 70-200 F2.8 L USM non-IS.”
  • Shingo Hayakawa: Deputy Chief Executive of Image Communication and Products Operations
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II – “… if I were to narrow it down, my choice would be a lens that came out in 2012: the Canon 24-70mm F2.8L II USM.”

I’m not a lens engineer/designer, but I to have my favourite Canon lenses based on design, usability and performance. For me, my absolute favourite Canon lens is the EF 200mm f/2L IS USM.

C-Log Addition to Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Not Just a Firmware Update?

C-Log Addition to Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Not Just a Firmware Update?

By Canon Rumors | March 22, 2017 | Canon DSLR Rumors

We’re continually receiving more information about C-Log being added to the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.

We’re now told by a separate source that adding C-Log to your EOS 5D Mark IV may require a quick trip to Canon service, and that it’s not as simple as just a firmware update. There is no mention whether or not this will be a service you will have to pay for or not, or if future EOS 5D Mark IV cameras will ship with the feature.

While we cannot confirm this information at present, we wouldn’t be surprised.

We haven’t received any more information about any other features coming to the EOS 5D Mark IV with this upgrade. We also haven’t heard if the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will also get this upgrade.

Review: Irix 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone

Review: Irix 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone

By Canon Rumors | March 22, 2017 | Third Party Lenses

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Irix 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone wide angle lens. Your options for wide angle prime lenses continues to grow with these new Irix lenses as well as the upcoming Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art series lens. This Irix lens appears to be a good once, especially when the “low” cost is considered.

Bryan Says:

While reviewing this lens, I was not being overwhelmingly convinced of its value proposition. But, when I started putting the Irix 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone Lens up against the comparables, I began to see it in a different light. It is not a perfect lens, and I would especially like to see the wide open corner image quality improved. But for the price, its value is easy to recognize. Getting a weather-sealed aluminum-magnesium lens barrel with decent image quality for a relatively low price puts this lens squarely on the consideration list. And for a new lens manufacturer, that is an impressive feat. Read the full review

C-Log Coming to EOS 5D Mark IV Confirmed [CR3]

C-Log Coming to EOS 5D Mark IV Confirmed [CR3]

By Canon Rumors | March 21, 2017 | Canon DSLR Rumors

Yesterday we reported we were pretty sure that the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV would get C-Log via a firmware update that will likely be announced at NAB next month. We can now confirm that to a certainty that it’s coming. However, we do not have a release date for the firmware.

We’re now asking sources if the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will see a similar firmware update, we’ll report back on that as soon as we’re able to.

There has been another suggestion that Canon has been actively looking at ways to “improve” the 4K video capture crop on the EOS 5D Mark IV. We cannot confirm at this time if we’re going to see that in a firmware update.
