Oh no :(
I’ve heard from multiple places that the upcoming Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II will not reach market by April 17, 2012 as originally stated by Canon. There is no official new date, but we’ve been told and seen elsewhere that it could be delayed until July 2012.
The 5D Mark III has been a relatively successful launch, I am disappointed to see that has turned out to be an exception instead of a new rule.
None of this has been confirmed by Canon yet.
Speaking of 1D X
I posted earlier about the 1D X being allocated to CPS members first in some countries. That does NOT include the USA.. I know it’s true in this one (Canada) as I had to provide a CPS number for preorder.
*UPDATE 2* From Adorama
Adorama has opened up preorders for the Canon EOS-1D X camera. Delivery is slated for the end of April.

Preorder at B&H now for $6799
It appears the Canon EOS-1D X will be available at the end of April in Germany for the low low price of €6299.
It’s claimed by one reader, that’s actually about a €300 increase from the original estimated price. The price includes VAT.
1D X Event at B&H
B&H is hosting an event with guest speaker Ashley McLaughlin to talk about and use the Canon EOS-1D X. The event takes place on March 12, 2012 between 12:00-2:00PM EST at the New York City superstore.
The Canon EOS-1D X has been given an official weight. The camera will weigh 1530g, which is 160g heavier than the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV.
The camera is also set to ship at the end of April, 2012.
Below is Canon’s claimed performance of the new battery in the EOS-1D X.
- View Finder shooting at 73°F/23°C Approx. 1120 shots
- View Finder shooting at 32°F/0°C Approx. 860 shots
- Live View shooting at 73°F/23°C Approx. 290 shots
- Live View shooting at 32°F/0°C Approx. 250 shots)
Your old 1D Mark III, 1D Mark IV and 1Ds Mark III batteries will still work in the new camera. New regulations have forced Canon to redesign the battery for the 1D X. I am very happy that they have made this possible.
From Ron Martinsen
Ron Martinson posted a preview/review of the new Canon EOS-1D X on his blog. He had a generally favourable take on the new camera.
He explains some new features that interest him and have moved Canon forward.
If I had to summarize one theme of Canon’s work on the 1D X it has to be “we’ve heard you”. Canon as done so many things to catch up with the Nikon D3s and D3x as well as extending its lead in video. Of course if they just did that then there would be little to be excited about, but I’m pleased to say that this is just the beginning. In fact, I’d probably put you to sleep if I listed everything here and I’m sure I have only discovered the tip of the iceberg.

Could it be?
I have received two random emails saying that “f/8″ autofocus in the 1D X will be added to the final firmware for the camera.
By f/8, I mean the ability to have autofocus when the widest aperture of a lens is f/8. i.e. a 500 f/4L IS with a 2X teleconverter. Which is 1000mm f/8.
We had heard previously that the perceived shortcomings in the 1D X could be fixed in firmware.

April 2012 Release?
From Calumet in the UK, comes word that the Canon EOS-1D X may not be shipping until April. I had heard that previously, and it’s not overly shocking.
No word on why the camera may be delayed.

Why the delay?
It’s been noted that an official weight for the new Canon EOS-1D X has yet to be finalized, I’m told the battery is the reason for this. It was suggested they’re having “serious” issues with the new battery.
Another person has come forward and said Canon is working feverishly on firmware feature changes and updates to the EOS-1D X. The good news is Canon will do whatever it takes to get the camera to market in March as previously announced.
I’m told the $6800 suggested price tag for the EOS-1D X isn’t written in stone.
