The New EOS [CR3]

The New EOS [CR3]

We will see a new camera on Tuesday and below I am confirming what we pretty much already know.

  • 1D/1Ds line is about to be amalgamated. (Name Unknown)
  • Full Frame
  • 18mp
  • 12 fps
  • 61 AF Points
  • New Battery
  • Available in March
  • Price unknown, but I suspect more than the 1D Mark IV

2012 is shaping up to be an interesting year for EOS.

The previous spec lists are pretty much bang on.

I have received no word of a new lens being announced at the same time. I suspect they’ll stagger announcements. The 24-70 f/2.8L II is the only lens being mentioned. Possibly in November. This isn’t included in the [CR3] rating.

New DSLR on Tuesday, October 18, 2011. [CR3]

New DSLR on Tuesday, October 18, 2011. [CR3]

Which one?
I am 99% positive we’re going to see a new DSLR next Tuesday, all the clues are pointing that way and I’m willing to give it a [CR3] rating.

What camera? No [CR] rating on this yet.
Everything is pointing to a new 1D series camera, I am getting zero information from sources or from anywhere else on the web about any other camera.  We started hearing 6 months ago that the next EOS camera would be a new 1D and the bits of information are all pointing that way again.

For now the best spec list I have is what I posted a few days ago.

  • 16-18mp
  • Full Frame
  • ISO 51,200
  • Dual Digic V
  • Crazy frame rates of 12-14fps have been reported
  • 61 AF points has also been reported

Stock levels of the 1D Mark IV also point me in this direction. It seems they are very much being built to fill orders. There doesn’t seem to be any excess stock too many places.

*UPDATE* Canon Announcement in Singapore – October 18, 2011

*UPDATE* Canon Announcement in Singapore – October 18, 2011

I received word that Canon Singapore will be holding a press event on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 for an “important global announcement”. There was no mention of what the announcement would be for, which is normal.

As you can see in the image above (and below), there is a picture of an EOS-1 on the front page of the print edition of Today newspaper in Singapore. Interesting to see, considering there is no model showing, as well as the very limited quantities of the 1D Mark IV for sale and none of the 1Ds Mark III.

Could be nothing…..

I will note there is an event in The Netherlands on October 18, 2011 as well. PDN in New York City is the following week, October 27-29, 2011. There’s a general feeling something is coming, and probably beyond a printer.

However, I have yet to receive any solid and articulate information about a new EOS product. There’s a lot of fragmented information floating around.

The EOS-1 in the image is a 1Ds as people have pointed out, however it seems like a very odd time to do 4 full page ads in a newspaper. However, as I mentioned earlier, it could mean nothing.

With the big announcement on November 3, 2011, is it too much to ask for another major camera announcement within a few weeks of the Hollywood date?

I have not [CR3]’d anything in regards to next week.

thanks Quek

Next EOS not a 1Ds4 or 5D3…. could be a 1D Mark 5? [CR2]

Next EOS not a 1Ds4 or 5D3…. could be a 1D Mark 5? [CR2]

What’s coming?
Last weeks mention of a 1D Mark V spec list was for the most part dismissed by yours truly. The spec list just seemed too detailed. However, my mind could be changing with new information that has trickled in over the last couple of weeks.

It’s looking more and more like a camera will be announced by Canon in 2011, however it may not be available until the new year.

What I do know

  • The next EOS camera will NOT be a 5D Mark III.
  • The next EOS camera will probably not be a 1Ds Mark IV. Probably is the key word here, it could change.
  • The next EOS camera will not be an APS-C camera.

What’s left?
A new model camera introduced to the lineup, or a replacement of a current camera. I’m currently leaning towards a replacement of the 1D Mark IV.

Line amalgamation of the 1D and 1Ds? Maybe not in the literal sense we’ve been told. However, they could definitely take on the same form factor. By making the Mark V a full frame camera. That would lower production costs, tooling and everything else that comes with sharing parts across camera models.

A Loose 1D Mark V spec list based on multiple pieces of information

  • Full Frame
  • 16-20mp Range
  • Native ISO 51,200
  • Dual DIGIC V
  • Frame Rate Unknown
  • EOS Video Features Unknown.

October 18 coincides with previous mentions of an announcement the third week of October. The rumor last week from DCI also mentions October 18, as does the CPS invite in The Netherlands.

If this is coming in 10 days, I expect to see a lot more info coming my way.

I was told as long as 6 months ago, that the next EOS camera would be a 1D Mark V.

I’m told more and more that Canon will be staggering announcements for the foreseeable future. You’ll see a body, and then a lens a while later, and so on.

I have nothing definitive to report on that topic.

Rumored 1D Mark V For October & Spec List [CR1]

Rumored 1D Mark V For October & Spec List [CR1]

A far fetched spec list?
An amalgamated 1Ds/1D Spec List.

  • 18mp
  • 61 AF Points
  • Native ISO of 100-51200
  • New Battery
  • 150g-200g heavier that current EOS-1s
  • October 18 Announcement

CR’s Take
Currently this is the only information I’ve seen in regards to such a camera. I’d rank this as highly unlikely for the moment.
