B&H Begins Shipping the Canon EOS-1D X

Good to know!
A few people have sent me screenshots showing that their Canon EOS-1D X preorders from B&H has begun shipping.

I’ll try to find out how big the preorder list is at B&H and when they expect to fill all the orders.

My Canon EOS-1D X Has Arrived!

Finally eh?
My Canon EOS-1D X has finally arrived! I think I actually preordered it before it was announced.

First Impressions?
Not many yet. I have touched this camera countless times at various photography trade shows, so nothing is really new. It is really nice to actually be able to put a card into one of the slots and save some images.

I will be using this camera pretty hard for the next little while and will let you know what I think.

Availability in the United States should come on Thursday or Friday, I’ve confirmed this with B&H.

Canon EOS-1D X Availability in North America

Canon EOS-1D X Availability in North America

They’re coming!
We have unconfirmed reports that a few retailers in the US and Canada will be receiving their initial Canon EOS-1D X shipments this week.

We have reports they’ve shown up already in Montreal, Canada. I expect to get mine some time this week.

B&H Photo
We can’t confirm, but we’ve heard B&H Photo has told preorder customers that they expect a shipment this week. The July 4, 2012 holiday may disrupt some shipping though.

Canon EOS-1D X Review

Canon EOS-1D X Review

A first review
Martin Bailey, a Tokyo based photographer has posted a pretty extensive review of the Canon EOS-1D X. You can read or listen to his podcast as he talks about his initial impressions of Canon’s new flagship.

From the review

OK, so these are the main points that I’ve come across so far. I can live with the resolution for the frame-rate and high ISO performance trade-off . I was expecting a larger leap forward in the AI Servo tracking performance, but I’m very happy with the accuracy of the AI Servo focusing when it locks on. For my cormorant tests I was working in very high contrast conditions, and with flowing water in the background, which has always been very tricky. Considering this, it performed OK, though I had hoped for a little more.

Canon EOS-1D X Hitting Retailers

Looking good!
The EOS-1D X is showing up in small numbers in Singapore. I have also heard it will appear in more stores in Asia this week. I have yet to hear anything about USA, Europe or Canada stock allocation.

Below are a couple of shots from a some lucky person.

Canon EOS-1D X AF Guidebook Updated

New Reading
While I find manuals pretty dry reading without the camera in my hand, this one is pretty interesting if you’re into the tweaking of AF systems.

Canon EOS-1D X Manual Posted

Canon EOS-1D X Manual Posted

Some reading….
The manual for the upcoming Canon EOS-1D X was posted online today.

We’ve heard to expect some shipments in late June & July, with preferential treatment given to the Olympic photographers. The rest of us should see 1D X’s in August and September.

Canon EOS-1D X Availability [CR3]

Coming in July…. sort of
Canon Canada has started to confirm the preorder lists from retailers for the EOS-1D X. Retailers have to prove the people buying the camera are CPS members, and have prepaid for the camera. If the camera is needed for the Olympics, it appears you’re moved to the front of the line. I don’t know if any other countries are going to experience the same limitations with the initial shipment of cameras.

Canon Canada expects a very small number of cameras in July, and that should be the same across the globe.

It still looks like August, and more likely September, is when we’ll see larger quantities of the 1D X.

A bit more info
The post from a couple of days ago sparked a lot of conversation. For the most part, most things were confirmed. The current cameras out there are not production models and will be returned to Canon when the production cameras hit the marketplace.

A few did mention that the end of June beginning of July is still the target date, but the quantity will be very small. I’m told a few sports photographers will be allocated the 1D X first. Retail availability in July was mentioned as being “optimistic”. August or September may be the months when big stock numbers hit the marketplace.
