When’s it coming?
The Canon EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x was mentioned as an in development product by Canon back in February, 2011. A lot of us expected an official product announcement sometime in the following 6 months, however that hasn’t happened. The perceived delay is probably due to Canon wanting to get the new 500 & 600 super telephotos into the hands of photographers first. Shipments have started in small numbers, and stock levels should improve in the coming months.
I have been told that an official announcement has been delayed a few times, however we may see it finally announced in June, 2012. There is also a possibility of it not being announced until the pre-Photokina announcements in August or September. You can “almost guarantee” it won’t be announced after Photokina I’m told.
Availability? I would expect late 2012 or early 2013. The price I have heard for this lens will be in the are of $10,999 USD.
Official announcement soon.
I’m told we’re going to see an official announcement for the Canon EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x lens soon. I’m told once production (availability in May) of the EF 500 f/4L IS II & EF 600 f/4L IS II are going strong, the new zoom will be officially announced. Expect stock to arrive fairly quickly after the announcement.
Expected retail price is around $11,000 USD.
EF 24-70 f/2.8L II
I’m still hearing a release date of April 17, 2012 for the new version of a classic. Everything I have been told about this lens has been unbelievably positive. I’ve heard “best zoom Canon has ever made”, “fastest focusing” & “unbelievably sharp” on numerous occasions.
Preorder the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II at B&H & Adorama for $2299.
EF 24 f/2.8 IS & EF 28 f/2.8 IS
Both are still slated for the end of June.
Anything before CES?
There could be a few products announced before CES.
I’m told there will be a PowerShot announcement, however nothing specific has been mentioned.
We’ve been told the 24-70 II and 35 f/1.4 II will finally be announced. The 24-70 II announcement has existed pretty much as long as this site has. I really want it announced so I can stop reading emails about it. I offer no opinion on the likelihood of such an announcement.
Possible evidence of a EF 24-70 f/2.8L II can be seen here, here & here.
The EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x could also be officially announced. However, that may not happen until the new 500 & 600 start to ship.
The only camera that is possible would be a Rebel, though I’ve received zero information one being announced in early January.
Nikon is rumoured to be announcing the D4 & new 85 f/1.8 on January 6, 2012.
Will Canon let Nikon have all the thunder at CES/PMA?
Lenses coming soon?
Received some information today that pointed to possible lens announcements in January, possibly on the 3rd.
This is plausible, because CES/PMA starts on January 10, 2012. This would also go in line with the staggered lens/body announcements we’ve seen in the past with pro bodies. The 1D Mark IV was announced in October, and the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II came at the beginning of the following January.
Lenses mentioned were the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x, 24-70 f/2.8L II and 35 f/1.4L II.
A few other pieces of information have said Canon will be updating a lot of current lenses in the next 24 months, I’d rank this as pretty tentative for the moment. Lenses are always difficult to predict and I’m not sure we really know the whole story about Canon’s production abilities in Japan.
Rumor Roundup ala Planet5D
@PlanetMitch over at Planet5D has posted a rumor roundup that touches on Canons events in the next month or so.
He’s also invited me to talk live on his site on Monday, October 3, 2011 at 3PM EST.

Patent – The return of the aperture ring.
@Photography Bay has posted a patent pertaining to aperture rings returning to lenses. The ring would be for video capture on DSLRs.

Apparently the PRO-1 moniker is for a “series” of printers. I’m not sure if we’ll see more than one. I know printers aren’t all that exciting, we’re waiting for the juicy EOS stuff.
Canon EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x Availability?
The most recent information I have is it will be officially announced this fall, with a Q2 2012 availability.
Canon still has to start churning out the new 500 and 600.
I’ve been receiving a lot of stuff recently, most of which I’m figured to be fakes. Like the 5D Mark III commercial. I’ve also received a lot of camera specs based on the patent from a few days ago.
However, a decent source that’s correct about 50% of the time sent me information about upcoming lenses from Canon.
I’m told an EF 14-24 f/2.8L and EF 24-70 f/2.8L II will be announced at the same time. Whether that’s with a new 1Ds or 5D Mark III was unknown. However, Q4, 2011 or Q1, 2012 was the timetable.
Patents for both optical formulas exist, so it’s highly possible. I have a hard time seeing Canon adding to the L lineup until the 8-15 starts shipping.
EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4X
We can expect this lens to become an official product with an announcement this fall. Availability in late Q1 2012 I’m told.
EF 24-70 f/2.8L for $1399 @ B&H
2 different people have written in saying there will be 3 separate announcements in 2011. One will be for PowerShot, the other for a DSLR(s) with 2011 availability and an announcement for a product that won’t be available until 2012.
A 5D Mark III will definitely get it’s own marketing push.
I get lots of questions as to when this lens will be announced.
It was only announced as an “in development” product, it hasn’t been officially announced as a consumer product. I predict we won’t see these in the wild until at least Q2 2012.
I worded my post about PowerShots incorrectly recently. There is in fact CMOS PowerShots, I was alluding to a CMOS sensor in the flagship PowerShots. Sorry about that.
I’ve posted another article written by Roger over at LensRentals.com. “How to test a lens”, it’s a fun read if you’re a geek like most of us.
A new profile will appear shortly as well. He’s a very interesting guy.
Calm before the storm
Things are slow to come in at the moment. Based on past experience, this is the calm before my inbox gets hammered with rumors.
London, UK, 7th February 2011 – Canon today announces the development of a telephoto zoom lens featuring an integrated focal length extender – the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4x. The lens will be displayed for the first time during CP+, held in Yokohama, Japan.
Designed for Canon’s leading range of EOS Digital SLR cameras, the new lens will be an ideal addition for sports and wildlife photographers, offering exceptional flexibility with a built-in 1.4x extender that creates an increased focal range of 280 – 560mm.
Perfect for photographers who require high performance, fast aperture and a flexible telephoto range, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4× will enable photographers to shoot a greater breadth of subjects using a single lens, delivering the best possible image quality at all focal lengths.
Developed as a new addition to Canon’s acclaimed L-series of professional lenses, the new lens will offer an unsurpassed combination of versatility, first-class optical performance and an enhanced weather-proof construction. The model will be released as part of Canon’s continued development of its EF lens line-up, offering enhanced performance and improved functions that cater for the needs of photographers from beginners through to professionals.
The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4x is scheduled for launch during 2011.
It was rumored, now it’s for real. A lens Canonites have been lusting for has already been upgraded by Nikon.
