Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM
Below are some comparison MTF charts of the 50 f/1.8 II, 50 f/1.4 & 40 f/2.8 STM.
The lens looks pretty decent in the center, and tails off a bit in the corners. However, it looks better than both of the current non L 50′s in the Canon lineup.
I also dig the moniker “Shorty Forty” for the new pancake. Taemobig on our forum may or may not have come up with the name.

All at once!
Canon has filed patents for a bunch of fast aperture telephoto lenses.
We’ve heard a number of times that Canon will update a lot of current lenses in 2012 and beyond. I think the 50 f/1.4 is the one that is in the most dire need of an update. An 85 1.2L III with a faster AF would also be welcomed. I hope they don’t update the 200 f/2L IS, I already love it and I would be forced to love the next one too at $6K+.
- 50 f/1.4
- 85 f/1.8
- 85 f/1.2
- 100 f/2
- 135 f/2
- 200 f/2

New 50′s on the block?
Received word today that prototype 50 f/1.4 II’s and 50 f/1.8 III’s exist. The thought was both would be announced at the same time.
The 50 1.4 is in dire need of an update, and I think you could expect to pay twice as much for one than the current model.
No mention of IS in either lens.
Nikon has updated both lenses, so this one seems plausible. I’ve given up posting when such stuff would be announced. No one can truly know.
Hello from Kenya
I’m currently at the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Also known as “The Mara”. I’m obviously having a great time and will be here in Kenya for another 9 days or so.
70-300 f/4-5.6L IS
I have one of these lenses with me here in Kenya on Safari. I am working on a review of the lens, it will be a user review like the others.
If I could give you a bit of a hint of what I think about it, I’ve taken less than 10 frames with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II and a few hundred with the new 70-300L. It’s not for everything, but it’s been great for a lot of things.
Not much in the way of rumors coming in, a few bits of email in regards to lenses.
One mentions a new focal length for a new tilt shift lens, what that is wasn’t known.
The other mentioned no replacement of the 50 f/1.4 anytime soon. The lens is a big money maker and hits a great price point for most people.
No camera rumors to speak of. Expect things to start picking up in January.
Canon’s Lens Future
The source admits this is a wild concept and comes from a third party. The third party is in a position that this type of knowledge is possible.
I received the following information. Even the source says take it with a large grain of salt.
Over the next decade, Canon will go all “L” EF lenses and EF-S lenses. There will be no NON-L EF lenses produced.
The source claims the following. This is a direct quote.
50mm f/1.4 will be replaced by a new upgraded Pro-grade 50mm f/1.4L at $600-700, even at $700 its still about half the cost of the 50mm f/1.2L and in the reach of most people shooting for say, the 50mm f/1.4 Sigma…
It will offer faster AF than its bigger brother due to lighter focusing groups, and possibly better optical performance due to improvements in glass and coatings…
The old 50mm f/1.4 will be discontinued, as will the 24, 28 and 35 non-L primes, all of which replaced with a 35mm f/1.4 EF-S lens that will be less than $400 and feature a build quality close to the 15-85 (Ie very solid)
I have never heard anything like this previously. It may be worth discussing and drawing out other folks that may have some knowledge on the subject. This is a rumors site, this felt worthwhile posting, even if it’s complete poppycock.
I will say the price points are likely way off. I can’t see a 35 1.4 coming in under $400. The 50 1.4L with better optics than the 1.2L? I’m not sure about the likelihood of that either.
Here’s the skinny
As most of you may know, I am behind Lens Rentals Canada along with the “Bank of Peter”. Things have been going so well, that we’re ordering new stock almost daily.
This is a list of lenses that are nearly impossible to get from Canon and have followed the same stock issue path as the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS before it was replaced. Heavy backorders, then most get filled. Then eternally backordered until an announcement.
We need about 3 of these lenses a day, no joke. There was a few weeks in April that this lens was tough to get. Then a small flurry of stock came about and most backorders were filled in May. Now in June, folks all over Canada and other places around the globe have not been able to get the lens. Some backorders are going on 3 weeks.
I currently have a few on order from Canon Canada and will keep an eye on whether or not we get allocation of stock.
This lens has also been backordered in a lot of places. We cannot get our hands on any. I’m not overly upset about that, but I’d love a new one.
TS-E 24 f/3.5L II :)
This lens takes about 2 months to get everytime I order it. It’s not being replaced, but it must be super popular.
All of this may mean nothing, or it could be the signs a lot of people are hoping for.
From a regular (50 f/1.4)
I’m told for certain that a new 50 f/1.4 is coming this summer from Canon.
It will retail in the $699 USD range.
The same source says there will be one new lens from Canon this summer/fall that is not a replacement of anything current. He didn’t have specs at the present time.
There are new teleconverters being tested at the World Cup I’m told. No word on a release timeframe.
