Xmas Edition Magic Lantern So what’s new for users of the APS-C Canon DSLRs using Magic Lantern?
FPS controlEdit
You can lower the frame rate down to 4 fps at a shutter speed of 1/4 seconds, which gives you extreme low-light capabilities.
Overcranking doesn’t really work; the 60D hardly gets 35fps in 1080p. On the other hand, 500D and 50D can now record at 24p!
HDR videoEdit
For high-contrast scenes with not-so-fast moving subjects, you can get great shadow and highlight detail.
This feature is enabled on all cameras, but older models may have synchronization issues.
We are also posting a free HDR post-processing workflow for advanced users, based on Avisynth with InterFrame plugin, VirtualDub and enfuse. Check this discussion thread for details!
Tip: HDR and FPS control are available in Advanced mode – press the MENU button!
New Cameras? No, there are no direct replacements coming soon.
The issue with shortages is to do with the floods in Thailand and parts needed to manufacture the cameras. Nikon is having the same troubles and the D7000 is experiencing the same issues.
I haven’t heard if any other Canon DSLR is affected.
“Creative lab” Party has released a music video for the band androp that required the use of 250 Canon 60Ds wired together. The effect is a wild and creative strobe show.
Inspired by the song’s lyrics, “not to make it a memory,” Party created the video using 250 Canon still cameras; their flashes were controlled via a potent DIY cocktail of arduino, openFrameworks, and Flash. The effect is a “light animation” produced with no CGI at all.
A Minor Firmware Update Firmware Version 1.1.0 incorporates the following fixes and improvements.
Fixes a phenomenon where the wireless built-in flash settings are reset to defaults when the battery is removed from the camera.
Fixes an intermittent phenomenon where image-rotation information is not recognized correctly when shooting with the camera in the vertical position depending on the timing of the shutter release.

Something Coming? There’s some talk about a “significant” Canon announcement for NAB. I wouldn’t think NAB would bring about a DSLR announcement, but maybe something in the camcorder realm is a possibility.
Availability of anything new is another story.
Japan Lots of people are asking what’s going to happen with stock levels and things like that with Canon and other Japanese origin gadgets. The answer is, I don’t know.
Canon is telling their reps not to say anything about Japan and what effect this tragedy is going to have on the industry. For the moment, no one really knows.
What I will say, is do not expect this to be rectified in a couple of weeks. We’re talking months before anything gets back to what is considered “normal”.
Canon Canada Cancels Upcoming 60D Rebate Canon Canada has cancelled an upcoming instant rebate program on the 60D, a casualty of the earthquake. There’s probably going to be more of this coming in the next few weeks.
Firmware Version 1.0.8 incorporates the following fix. 1. Fixes a phenomenon in which captured images may become overexposed when using the camera’s built-in flash or an external Speedlite in combination with the lenses listed below:
Firmware 1.0.8 for the 60D
A reader reports buying 2 60D’s and each camera had a different firmware version. One camera was 1.0.5, the other was 1.0.8.
I expect any 60D firwmare update will be “phenomenon” fixes.
1D Mark IV Firmware
I’ve been told again that new firmware for the 1D4 is in the pipeline. A feature or 2 may be added which has delayed development.
