A Brief 2013 Canon Roadmap [CR1]

A Brief 2013 Canon Roadmap [CR1]

What’s in the pipeline
As always, things quiet down after an announcement. The two recently announced lenses seem to have generated quite a bit of talk, and that’s always good, even if a lot of it was negative towards the pricing. I hope to have both the EF 24-70 f/4L IS and EF 35 f/2 IS in the hands of our new reviewer sometime in December.

EOS
Two new DSLRs will be coming in the first quarter of 2013. Most likely APS-C cameras. Definitely a Rebel and most likely one of the 70D or 7D Mark II.

EOS-M
New lenses in Q1 of 2013 will be announced. Expect a fast prime and a telephoto lens. No mentions of a new EOS-M camera. We’re all hoping for a firmware update to improve the AF of the EOS-M.

Cinema EOS
Going with some previous reports, we’re told that new Cinema EOS lenses will be announced by the end of January. No cameras are in the immediate pipeline. We’re still waiting for the EOS 1D C to make it to market as well as the EOS C100.

The Big Megapixel Camera
They’re out there, announcement is unknown. It is definitely 40+ mp and will be geared to studio and landscape photographers. Apparently there’s lots of new technology in this upcoming body.

Canon EOS 7D Successors [CR1]

Canon EOS 7D Successors [CR1]

The prosumer market up next?
Now that Canon has addressed the “professional” space with the 5D Mark III, 1D X & 1D C (Yes, I know some want the big megapixel camera), it could be time to turn our attention to the “prosumer” space. We keep hearing bits of information about what’s planned for the segment in the coming months.

The 70D
The latest I have heard, and spoken about before, is that we’ll see the 70D move up the line. It’ll be specced close to the current 7D, however with a new higher megapixel APS-C sensor.

The 7D X
The rumor that won’t go away is that the APS-H sensor will return to the Canon lineup and fit between the 70D and 5D Mark III. Is it really possible? Maybe. I don’t think Canon needs more APS-C cameras beyond the Rebel, a 70D and possibly a mirrorless entry.

Odds & Ends: 70D, 7D2, New Full Frame, D600 & Photoshop CS6

Odds & Ends: 70D, 7D2, New Full Frame, D600 & Photoshop CS6

Lots of small things
The rumor mill has started to heat up as of late, most of the stuff seems pretty out there. However, stuff is appearing on other sites and in my inbox. I’m not sure how much of it is recycled speculation, but that does happen from time to time.

I’ll rate each bit of information on its own.

3 new DSLR bodies this summer [CR1]
A mention of 3 new EOS bodies before Photokina in September. Only one of them being a full frame camera. It was suggested that an “entry level” full frame camera wouldn’t be announced and it would be an upper level EOS-1D style camera.

7D Mark II to be full frame? [CR1]
I’ve seen this in my inbox a few times, and it has shown up on [cw]. I’ve never really believed this one, I don’t think they can call it “7D Mark II” and change the sensor size from a marketing perspective. There are lots of EF-S lenses in the hands of 7D owners.

I have no doubt there will be a full frame camera under the 5D Mark III, but it can’t have all the prosumer features of the 7D to retain the moniker and stay around $2000. That just doesn’t seem like smart marketing. But hey, I’m not in marketing. :)

Canon EOS 70D [CR1]
More mentions of the 70D moving up the ranks in the APS-C realm and becoming the flagship APS-C camera. We’ve heard similar things and think it’s entirely plausible.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 Review
We have posted Ben Long’s review of the Adobe’s latest version of Photoshop, Read it here.

Nikon D600
The speculated “entry level” full frame Nikon D600 looks to be quite real. Check the photo evidence here.

4 More DSLRs Coming in 2012? [CR2]

4 More DSLRs Coming in 2012? [CR2]

More to come
Received some information that Canon is far from done as far as camera launches go for 2012. I am being told that 4 more DSLRs are coming in 2012.

Which cameras?
It’s unknown if the expected mirrorless entry counts against the mentioned 4 camera bodies.

Speculation about what the 4 cameras could possibly be are below.

1) “Entry Level” full frame camera. Think of it as a direct replacement for the 5D Mark II.

2) Prosumer APS-C, possibly the 70D and not a direct replacement of the 7D.

3) The big megapixel entry, mentioned to be an EOS-1D style body.

4) A mirrorless entry.

If the mirrorless doesn’t count against the 4 purported camera bodies, I’m unsure what else Canon could have up their sleeves for the EOS line. A few people have suggested a 5D in the cinema EOS lineup, however I don’t think that’s likely until after the EOS-1D C starts shipping in late 2012.

Canon EOS 70D & 3D Prediction from Japan

From Japan
A magazine in Japan called CAPA may have shown specs for 2 Canon cameras, the first being the 70D and the next being the long talked about EOS-3D. The magazine is pretty well respected, and all of this could be entirely plausible.

With the new Rebel coming on June 8, 2012, and the predicted mirrorless following soon after, I am unsure if either of these cameras are slated for an announcement any time soon.

Canon 70D

  • 22MP and DIGIC5+
  • 19-point AF
  • 6 FPS

Canon EOS 3D

  • 30+ megapixels, 1D-class body
  • Dual Digic5+ processors for 6 FPS
  • 61-point AF system, major functions same as 1DX
  • Equipped with flash (or speedlite transmitter)

The above scan was sent to us, you can see more at [CW].

Canon EOS 70D & EOS 7D Mark II Speculation [CR1]

Canon EOS 70D & EOS 7D Mark II Speculation [CR1]

APS-C replacements soon?
The first of what will probably be many spec lists about the mentioned cameras. With the knowledge of an 18mp T4i, it stands to reason that Canon will retain the same megapixel count in the next xxD and xD APS-C cameras. Still no mention whether or not it’s an updated sensor. I would certainly hope it is.

EOS 70D

  • Digic 5
  • 18mp
  • 100% viewfinder with grid lines like 7D
  • 19 AF Points from 7D
  • Continuous AF in LiveView & Video Recording
  • September Announcement

7D Mark II

  • Dual Digic 5
  • 100% viewfinder
  • 61 Point AF from 5D Mark III
  • Announced after 70D

This is a grain of salt spec list, though I do think anything announced for Photokina would be mostly finalized by now.

5D3/X and Other Random News

5D3/X and Other Random News

5D Mark III / 5D X
There has been nothing new to report on the recent leaked DSLR from Canon. Keep your thoughts and opinions coming though.

Rebel T4i & 70D [CR1]
I have received little bits of info in regards to the replacement to the T3i and 60D, both will be “addressed” by the time Photokina rolls around (probably a lot sooner). Nothing in regards to specs or direction at this time. There’s a general opinion Canon will announce their mirrorless camera for Photokina in September.

Meanwhile [NL] is told that a new Rebel will be announced at CP+

Announcement date?
My [CR3] level source in regards to announcement dates has yet to see one for CP+. Although it has been confirmed that Nikon will announce that day. It may just be a Coolpix day for them though.

5D Mark II at the Oscars
A movie shot with the 5D Mark II has been nominated for an Oscar. So fear not, even if the new 5D Mark III makes it way to us soon, your 5D Mark II is still very capable.

I’m in the air right now leaving Memphis after spending 2 days at LensRentals.com. Roger, Aaron, Drew, Tyler, and the rest of the crew were great.

Check out LensRentals.com as well as their used section of Canon gear. I know for certain you’ll be happy with any used purchase.

The Land of Crazy or…. ? [CR1]

The Land of Crazy or…. ? [CR1]

Rumors are flooding my inbox. Most of which I cannot substantiate to any degree. I figured it would be fun to post the most recent “roadmap” type of rumors.

Some of the below stuff has appeared on other rumor sites, as well as various blogs and tweets I’ve seen. I’ll give you my opinion on this stuff at the bottom.

August 2011 7D Mark II

  • 24 Mega pixel Full Frame
  • Dual Digic V
  • Will be a partial replacement for the discontinued 1D Mark IV

September 2011 1D Mark V

  • 32 Mega pixel Full Frame
  • Dual Digic V
  • Will be a partial replacement for the discontinued 1D Mark IV and complete the merging of the 1D line

March 2012 5D Mark III

  • 32 Mega pixel Full Frame
  • Digic V
  • New 11 point AF system
  • Will have the best video features of the EOS line

CR’s Take
7D Mark II being a fullframe camera and “partially” replacing the  1D Mark IV? Not likely for a couple of reasons.

  • The model name “7D” would go against Canon’s naming strategy. I can’t see a Mark II of the current camera, overtaking the 5D Mark III in pricepoint and features. Name this camera “3D” and it makes sense. It was said the 70D would move to where the 7D current sits, an APS-C camera with lots of features above the Rebel. There could be some truth to that, the price difference between the 60D and T3i is tiny. I’m going to wager that any 7D direct replacement will remain an APS-C camera.
  • The other issue I see with this theory is folks that currently have a 7D with EF-S lenses. A lot of 7D buyers are very likely to have purchased a 10-22 and/or a 17-55 f/2.8 IS, not allowing them to bring their lenses to a Mark II version would be silly.

The 1D/1Ds merger talk comes around a fair bit. I do believe it’s going to happen. When? Not sure.

5D Mark III not until 2012? There has been A LOT of talk in regards to the release of the 5D Mark III. Everything recently has said it will be announced next year. Next year is a Photokina year, although I’m not sure that influences Canon’s marketing. There is going to be a lot of talk about the camera, and none of the regulars that are correct have sent me any information.

One constant remains from the stream of stuff I’m receiving, there will be a shakeup in the lineup.

Delays Abound?

Delays Abound?

I am receiving lots of information about delays with current products, as well as future products.

Below is what I am told is the delay in regards to manufacturing times of new current cameras

  • 1D Mark IV – 2-4 Months
  • 5D Mark II –  1-2 Months
  • 7D – 1-2 Month

New Camera Announcements
We have always been told the 1Ds replacement would be in 2012, now we are hearing the next 5D will also be 2012. [NL] alluded to that as well.

Current time frames for new cameras.

  • 1Ds Mark IV – Early 2012
  • 1D Mark V – Early 2012
  • 5D Mark III – Late 2011 – Mid 2012
  • 7D Mark II – Late 2012
  • 70D – Early 2013
  • T4i – Early 2012

This stuff will move around, but I reiterate there is a ton of uncertainty.

Lenses?
I’ve received nothing in regards to arrival of the announced lens, I’ll keep asking.
