*UPDATE* Announcements on March 22, 2013?

UPDATE
Invites appear to have gone out for March 21, 2013 in the Czech Republic, the invite can be seen below.

A Thursday announcement day is a bit different. Most announcement days I can remember are either on a Tuesday or a Friday. I’ll probably see more invites in the coming days that will clarify the date.

Canon EOS 70D Coming?
A few places are mentioning March 22, 2013 as an announcement date for Canon. We’re expecting the new Canon EOS 70D to be announced, and it will be a big step up from the EOS 60D in terms of technology.

Also expect some lower end PowerShots to be announced on the same day as the EOS 70D. There is no word on a lens announcement.

Pre CES Week: Lenses, Cameras & Compacts

Pre CES Week: Lenses, Cameras & Compacts

Nothing yet
The rumoured lens announcements from a few weeks back have yet to materialize. Beyond what I was told then, I haven’t heard a single thing about the lenses in question.

Lens announcements are always the toughest to pin down. One of the major reasons is, Canon doesn’t have media events for them if they’re being announced alone. If a DSLR is involved, they’re a little easier to get information on.

Camera Bodies
I have heard some murmurs about a DSLR announcement before or at CES, nothing concrete though.

Compacts?
I haven’t had one PowerShot camera rumor in a while.

Canon at CES?
Yes, they’re there. They’ll be showing their gear at booth 13304. For the moment however, it looks like they won’t be showing anything new. All this could change literally overnight.

Lens Announcement [CR1]

Lens Announcement [CR1]

Lenses coming soon?
Received some information today that pointed to possible lens announcements in January, possibly on the 3rd.

This is plausible, because CES/PMA starts on January 10, 2012. This would also go in line with the staggered lens/body announcements we’ve seen in the past with pro bodies. The 1D Mark IV was announced in October, and the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II came at the beginning of the following January.

Lenses mentioned were the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x, 24-70 f/2.8L II and 35 f/1.4L II.

A few other pieces of information have said Canon will be updating a lot of current lenses in the next 24 months, I’d rank this as pretty tentative for the moment. Lenses are always difficult to predict and I’m not sure we really know the whole story about Canon’s production abilities in Japan.

What’s Next?

What’s Next?

That was fun!
The EOS 1D X caught a lot of people off guard, and shows a dynamic shift in Canon’s EOS product line. There are surely some really exciting and more than evolutionary products in the pipeline from Canon.

November 3, 2011 (No Rating)
I’m still pretty convinced that the November 3, 2011 announcement in Hollywood will be in regards to a video camera or two. One of them will NOT be the 5D Mark III.

The basic breakdown of what I’ve been told so far.

  • Possibly 2 cameras
  • EF & PL Mount
  • Super35mm Sensor
  • One could be EOS branded
  • A 30-300 lens.
  • Possibly 3 lenses in total.

I’m told whatever launches may not be a 4K camera, but will become a 4K camera down the line.

No CR rating on any of this stuff. Partially due to ignorance and new sources passing on information.

October 26, 2011
The PDN show is in New York City next week, and there is an event scheduled for October 26, 2011.

One thing that will be possibly introduced is the Canon Pro-1 printer. A 12 colour A3+ printer.

I do not expect any other EOS camera to be announced. The 1D X deserves the spotlight it’s going to get next week.

Lenses (No Rating)
The always difficult to predict lens announcements. I think (not know) we’ll be seeing a lens or two announced within the next month. Whether it’s next week or not I don’t know.

Only 2 lenses have been mentioned as being “announced” soon.

5D Mark III
Canon may have amalgamated the 1D line, however I think a split of the 5D line is a possibility. I have been told that has been discussed and put into practice with prototypes. I don’t expect any announcement of such a camera(s) until well into 2012. That could obviously change.

1Ds Mark III Studio Replacement?
We were told ages ago that the 1Ds Mark III replacement would be a massive departure. The dates haven’t come to fruition, but the big megapixel Nikon has, as well as the 1Ds being eaten up by the 1D X.

I’ll do a breakdown of the new 1D X shortly. I hope to head to NYC next week to check it out in person.

A Loose Roadmap [CR1]

A Loose Roadmap [CR1]

What’s coming in 2012
Received some info about a “loose roadmap” for Canon in 2012.

Two things were noted about 2012.

  1. It’s the 25th anniversary of EOS
  2. It’s an Olympic year as well as Euro 2012.

We will see a DSLR that will be showing for CES/PMA in the 2nd week of January 2012. When the announcement for the camera would be was unknown.

A new 1Ds would follow sometime in February.

Photokina would bring about a 5D Mark II replacement as well as a 7D replacement.

Lenses
All that was said is Canon is concerned about getting production up and then they’ll start announcing lenses. The next round of lenses would be “higher end short focal lengths”.

It was also noted that a lot of existing lenses are on the upgrade schedule, though none were listed.

It was stressed that roadmaps are extremely loose within Canon, and stuff is announced when it’s done. It was noted the trade show schedule isn’t as important as it used to be, though they still want to be talked about at both CES and Photokina.

This & That – What Others are Saying

This & That – What Others are Saying

Rumor Roundup ala Planet5D
@PlanetMitch over at Planet5D has posted a rumor roundup that touches on Canons events in the next month or so.

He’s also invited me to talk live on his site on Monday, October 3, 2011 at 3PM EST.

Read the roundup

Patent – The return of the aperture ring.
@Photography Bay has posted a patent pertaining to aperture rings returning to lenses. The ring would be for video capture on DSLRs.

Read all about it

PRO-1 Printer
Apparently the PRO-1 moniker is for a “series” of printers. I’m not sure if we’ll see more than one. I know printers aren’t all that exciting, we’re waiting for the juicy EOS stuff.

Canon EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x Availability?
The most recent information I have is it will be officially announced this fall, with a Q2 2012 availability.

Canon still has to start churning out the new 500 and 600.

October 26 Event?

What do we have here?
The expected Pixma announcements fit in around that date, however there is an EOS logo showing on the bottom of the invite as well. October 26 is a Wednesday. I had heard previously about a “third week of October announcement” for Pixma and from a couple of people EOS. However as posted yesterday, I had been told by everyone and their mother that no new DSLR was coming in 2011.

Thanks manny

Opinion – What EOS Will Look Like by Photokina

Opinion – What EOS Will Look Like by Photokina

What say me?
A lot of unknown and exciting things are swirling around that November 3, 2011 announcement in Hollywood. I can tell you truthfully that I have seen just about every possible scenario. What’s true? For the moment I don’t know.

I think EOS will evolve a lot in the coming 12 months, the business of digital SLRs has changed with the advent of video in the segment. I figured I’d offer my opinion on the line partially based on things I’ve been told and things that just make sense to me.

I’ll start at the top of the EOS lineup and work my way down.

By the way, Photokina is next September in Cologne/Koln, Germany. See you there!

*This is NOT fact*

EOS 1D/1Ds
I don’t think we’ll see this camera announced until 2012. I also see the amalgamation of the line has highly possible. If Canon has the technology to give big megapixels as well as frame rate. It makes no sense to produce two different bodies. I’m not sure if we’ve seen the last of APS-H, though I think it’s likely. I could see this body in the $5000-$6000 range.

5D Mark III/3D
The camera most of the planet wants to see announced and shipped now! I don’t think it’s likely to appear before the end of 2011.

If in 2012 the top tier of cameras is merged, there will be a price gap a 5D3/3D could move up to.  Say, $3500. There could be a lot of advanced video features, big megapixels and an upgraded, but not pro body level AF system. I fully expect Canon to figure out a way to directly monetize the video features of DSLRs.

When? I’ve heard anytime between tomorrow and Photokina 2012.

6D
One of the recent rumors has been the coming of a new full frame EOS body added to the lineup. It would be in the $2000 range. It would see a drop in megapixels from the 21 of the 5D Mark II and be solely designed for ISO performance. To meet the price point, I’d expect a modified 9 point AF (more crosstype sensors).

If the 5D3 moves up the latter in performance and price, a $2000 full frame camera at launch would be an industry first and a massive seller. Canon was the first company to break the $1000 price barrier with a DSLR, no reason they can’t do it again.

I can definitely see this as a possibility, though I’m not convinced of it yet.

*correction* The full frame Sony A850 launched at $2000 USD. Thanks for pointing it out.

7D Mark II
I think the 7D will make it all the way through 2012 and into 2013. What is there to improve on the camera? How do you really make it better enough to justify a new model? If Canon is spending a lot of resources on developing 3 new full frame sensors, I could see APS-C remaining relatively unchanged.

The biggest upgrade I think to the 7D will be a price drop over the next 12 months.

60D
As with the 7D, there’s really no need to upgrade this camera. It will only be 2 years come Photokina, and the cycle of camera updates is slowing down.

It’s a good little camera that sells well. I think we’ll see it last into 2013.

T3i/T3
More of the same here (a bit boring eh), I don’t see a new rebel in 2012 either. A domino in the APS-C line will have to fall before they all get an update. Using the same sensor in the 3 cameras is probably great for the bottom line. I can’t see them abandoning that mindset.

Mirrorless
When Canon announces a mirrorless system, I think it’s going to be a standalone product. So it won’t be EF or EF-S compatible. I see Canon launching a unique product to their line, not more of the same. I think the low end of mirrorless cameras is a crowded world, especially with the rainbow of cameras Nikon just announced. So why add another bunch of cameras to the segment? I think the gold mine for Canon is convincing the North American market to buy a mirrorless camera. Their mirrorless camera. So it’s going to have to be different.

To be honest, I really have no great hypothesis of what they’re going to do. It’s something I’d have to think more on.

So that’s it, as of today, that’s the way I see the EOS lineup going. It’s based on some information I’ve received as well as some opinion.

PowerShots Next Week [CR2-CR3]

PowerShots Next Week [CR2-CR3]

Next announcements
Next Tuesday we will be seeing some more Canon announcements. Alas, no DSLRs will be announced. We’re reminding the folks of previous information.

PowerShot SX40 HS [CR3]
12mp
35x Zoom
HD Video

The second camera to be announced isn’t quite as definite, we’re pretty sure it’s an S95 replacement.

PowerShot S100 (tentative name) [CR2]
12mp
5X Zoom

G13?
Again, there has been nothing about a G13, so it looks like the G12 will remain a current product for the time being. Could this be a sign the series is taking a turn? Here’s hoping.

Another theory is the “S100″ rumors we’re hearing are actually for a G13 and the “S” series isn’t getting an upgrade.

*UPDATE* Announcement Dates [CR2]

*UPDATE* Announcement Dates [CR2]

*UPDATE*
[CR3] was a typo, it should be [CR2]. Sorry about that. I have heard from others places we’ll be seeing new PowerShots around the 15th of September.

When?
The first announcement date I have received is September 15, 2011. There are events planned in Shanghai, China on September 16, 2011.

By the looks of it, it’ll be compacts (PowerShot) only.

When else?
September 27 should be  another announcement date. There will be events on September 28 showing off new Canon printing solutions. Invites are out for various European countries.

DSLR?
All is quiet on the DSLR front.
