Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L Replacement Talk

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L Replacement Talk

By Canon Rumors | September 4, 2015 | Canon Lens Rumors

There is a lot of chatter currently about the potential of a new Canon EF 50mm lens.

The first bit of ‘evidence’ people have let us know about is that the EF 50mm f/1.2L lens is missing from the Canon USA web site. This happens from time-to-time, most recently with the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. The listings on the site were probably broken around the time of the EF 35mm f/1.4L II announcement.

Pricing drops on the EF 50mm f/1.2L is also cited as a potential sign.

As of today, we haven’t heard anything recently about a new 50L or 50 f/1.4, although the latter could definitely use an update as it is 30+ years old, although you could also make an argument for the 50 f/1.2L, as the design is flawed and could really use a floating element to offset the focus shifting issues some photographers experience.

There is a lively discussion on the forum about this.

Canon to Put Wi-Fi Into Pro Bodies?

Canon to Put Wi-Fi Into Pro Bodies?

By Canon Rumors | September 4, 2015 | Canon Business General

Canon has some of the best weather sealed camera bodies in the business, however that has lead to the omission of WiFi in camera bodies like the EOS-1D X, EOS 5D Mark III and EOS 7D Mark II. Canon has stated they have been unable to get reliable WiFi performance from behind all that magnesium.

A new US patent looks like it may have solved that issue, as they have figured out a way to put an antenna under the covering over the sloping surface of the pentaprism (thanks Mt Spokane). This could be fore Wi-Fi or other wireless communications device like a Speedlite transmitter.

US Patent US 9,113,062 B2

“Conventionally, there has been proposed a configuration of an imaging apparatus in which a wireless communication unit is arranged on the top side of a pentaprism in a finder section (see Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2008-244735). However, an accessory shoe for providing communication by being connected to an external device such as a strobe is provided on the visible face of an imaging apparatus. Therefore, the metal section of the accessory shoe disturbs a radio wave to be emitted from or received by the antenna section of the wireless communication unit upon wireless communication, so that stable communication state cannot be obtained. In addition, the clearance between the wireless communication unit and the accessory shoe needs to be ensured, resulting in an undesirable increase in size in the height direction of the imaging apparatus. Accordingly, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2000-75381 discloses a configuration in which the wireless communication unit is arranged on the inclined surface (Dach surface) of the pentaprism such that the accessory shoe does not disturb a radio wave upon wireless communication.”

Connectivity is going to have to be a big part of future DSLR bodies and this could show that Canon is planning on implementing more of these connectivity features with hardware and software.

Turkish photographer Mert Gündoğdu has written a first impressions review of the recently announced Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II, along with a lot of excellent sample images from the lens, as well as various performance comparisons against the original Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L. The CA comparison is especially intriguing and shows Canon has done a superb job with the optics of the new lens.

The site is in Turkish, so you may need to use a translator, though the images speak for themselves.

Below are a few comparisons and samples from the article, to see the rest head over to Mert’s blog.

New PIXMA Pro Printer Coming [CR2]

New PIXMA Pro Printer Coming [CR2]

By Canon Rumors | September 3, 2015 | Canon Accessories

We’re told that new PIXMA Pro printer(s) will arrive before the end of the year, most likely at PhotoPlus Expo next month in New York City. The flagship of the line, the PIXMA Pro-1 was announced in October 2011, and a year later the PIXMA Pro-10 and PIXMA Pro-100 printers were announced.

Details of the new printer(s) were sketchy, but we’re told that Canon will finally introduce a 17″ printer for the PIXMA line, and we should expect a new ink technology with the printer.

While I appreciated the build quality of the PIXMA Pro-1, it’d be nice if the new printers weren’t made out of iron.

More to come…
