Patent: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS

Another patent showing a Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS. We have seem them in the past and have been told that prototypes have existed for such a lens. The issue has always been size and weight and it being usable over long periods of time for event photographers.

Two New 24-70’s Coming in 2014? [CR1]

Two New 24-70’s Coming in 2014? [CR1]

Two new 24-70 lenses coming in 2014?
We were told a long time ago that IS in the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II wasn’t yet dead, as prototypes do exist with image stabilization.

Canon chose to go the route of smaller size and lighter weight for the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II and created possibly the best performing standard zoom lens on the market.

We’ve been told that two new 24-70 type lenses with IS are a possibility and could appear in mid to late 2014. The first being a non-L 24-70 with IS and STM, along with a variable aperture. This lens would obviously be the least expensive lens of the 24-70 lineup.

The second would be an EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS, which would be larger and have optical performance that rivals the current non IS version. It wouldn’t be a replacement to the current lens, just a very expensive bigger brother.

CR’s Take
I find all of this plausible, we were told a long time ago that Canon had basic plans in place for 4 different 24-70 lenses for various budgets and needs. If such a lens does appear, It’s going to cost A LOT!

This latest bit of information comes from parts unknown, so take it with a grain of salt.

EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS Exists as a Working Prototype [CR2]

EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS Exists as a Working Prototype [CR2]

It’s not coming soon
There are plans to release an EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS sometime in the next 18 months. I have confirmed from two sources that the end of 2013 or early 2014 is the earliest we’d see a production model announced.

There are no plans for a non-IS 24-70 f/4L.

Thinks that make you go…..
I have received two separate communications in regards to an EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS  being in the wild in prototype form. We knew this prototype has existed for quite some time, however we figured the concept was dead with the release of the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II. Canon would bring this lens to market alongside the non-IS version. Canon already does this with the 70-200 f/2.8s & 70-200 f/4s, so it’s possible they bring it to the standard zooms as well.

It’s a bit early to talk about pricing strategy, but the new EF 24-70 f/2.8L II will drop in price over the next 12 months, as you can see by the recent big drops to the EOS 5D Mark III.

This is from a new source, take this with a grain of salt. I’m intrigued as I do know the IS version exists.

The timelines for future lenses seem to all be going into 2013, more on that later.

Patent – Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS

You want IS?
A patent for an EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS has surfaced finally, this has been a lens that has been talked about and desired for a long time.

We mentioned some time back that there were 5 or 6 version of the new 24-70, and one of them had IS. Canon decided against an IS version for reasons to do with weight, size and cost from what I’m told.

Sadly for the ones that want an IS version of this lens, I have little faith that such a lens will be coming any time soon. Patents can sometimes appear after a product has been announced, and that’s probably what has happened here.
