January 8, 2013 Announcements?

January 8, 2013 Announcements?

Not hearing much…
CES starts next week and with it a lot of camera companies will be launching consumer level products. Last year Canon launched the PowerShot G1 X for CES and that was about it.

No media events have been planned by Canon for next week. 99% of the time if Canon is launching a significant camera, there is some kind of media invite to showcase the new cameras.

However, when lenses are announced, that is not always the case. There was no media invites when the EF 24-70 f/4L IS and EF 35 f/2 IS were announced.

We’ve heard that two, possibly 3 lenses could be announced on January 8, 2013, but we have not received any confirmations from known sources yet.

Announcement on January 8, 2013? New Lenses [CR1]

New lenses soon?
I have received my first announcement date of 2013. It’s apparently going to be January 8, 2013.

What is coming that day?
I am told 2 new L lenses. The EF 35 f/1.4L II and EF 14-24 f/2.8L will be announced. Both lenses would be available by the end of March 2013. The EF 35 f/1.4L II is a complete redesign and has 2 UD elements.

This is a [CR1] for now as I try and get confirmation of the announcement date and the lenses that are coming.

Canon Announcements Next Week? [CR1]

Canon Announcements Next Week? [CR1]

For PhotoPlus 2012
A few murmurs about Canon announcements next week. All the talk about a development announcement for a large megapixel camera have gone completely quiet. Most of what was talked about was from new sources, known sources said they hadn’t heard anything.

There is some talk about lens announcements taking place early next week. Although no one is committing to which lenses will get announced. The usual suspects are an EF 35 f/1.4L II and the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x. The latter is the most likely, with the other less of a possibility. I do expect something from Canon, but they’re holding their cards pretty close to the chest.

From reports earlier in the year, we’re still two short on the DSLR/Mirrorless announcements for 2012 and a few lenses as well. However, with the production problems Canon has had with lenses, it’s a good bet a lot of things have been delayed.

What DSLRs could be coming in 2012? The first would be the EOS-1D C becoming official, that would leave one more camera to be announced in 2012. My bet would have been on a Rebel T4, however we’re getting pretty close to the Christmas shopping season for an announcement like that. With the problems they’ve had with the Rebel 650D, it’s possible that too has been delayed. The big megapixel camera, would be a development announcement with availability well into 2013 according to most. We’ll have to see if that comes to fruition.

We also hope to find out about delays in production of the EF 500 f/4L IS II & EF 600 f/4L IS II, the last I heard we won’t see them until November.

A bit more information
I’m told that the coming big megapixel camera is a very new sensor design/overhaul. The emphasis is in the dynamic range of the sensor. Performance is said to be on the level of medium format, even better than the impressive D800.

The same person also says the camera won’d be a “3D” or any other “D”, it will get an all new naming scheme.

EF 35 f/1.4L II
This is apparently also ready for an announcement, now that the manufacturing issues with the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II have been solved. This lens could come at PhotoPlus along with the new EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x.

Most of the information lately has been through third parties and from new sources, so keep the salt shaker beside you.

thanks for the info

The next 35mm…
The oft rumored EF 35 f/1.4L II is being talked about again. We’re told an announcement for the new “L” prime will only happen once the new EF 24-70 f/2.8L II begun shipping in decent quantity.

That would put the announcement sometime in 2012 with availability probably being in early 2013. One patent for the optical forumla has been around for a while.

I’m told as many as 3 prototypes exist, though they have only made it to a very select few photographers.

CRs Take
I’m pretty confident this lens will be announced sooner than later, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it paired with a new high megapixel camera.
