Patent: Canon EF 50 f/1.8 IS

Patent: Canon EF 50 f/1.8 IS

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 IS
A patent has show up showcasing an EF 50 f/1.8 IS lens. Could this be the replacement to the 50 f/1.4? We had heard about this lens existing last year. While some may desire a direct 1.4 replacement with IS, I think Canon may want some separation between the EF 50 f/1.2L and the next 50 in the lineup. We’ve also heard of a new EF 50 f/1.2L design being tested.

Patents: New 50mm, 85mm & 135mm Lenses

New fast primes
The often talked about 50 f/1.4 and 135 f/2 have appeared in a new patent this week. We’ve heard that a replacement to the 50 f/1.4 would come first. A new 135 f/2L is a desired lens if they put IS into the upgrade. We’ve also heard a new 85 f/1.2L with reduced weight and approved AF performance was also on the horizon.

Review – Canon EF 50 f/1.2L

Review – Canon EF 50 f/1.2L

Canon’s king of the 50′s
Justin has reviewed the Canon EF 50 f/1.2L for your reading pleasure. He had a lot of experience with the EF 50 f/1.4 and f/1.8, but it turns out he may have enjoyed the 50L a little bit more.

I’m a fan of the 50 f/1.2L over the 50 f/1.4 if your budget allows it, the build quality, AF performance and optics are worth the price of admission. There is still some talk about the focus shifting of the lens, although those talks have abated a lot over the years. That’s not an issue I’ve ever struggled with for my style of photography, and I think most people feel the same way.

Patent: A New Canon EF 50 f/1.2 & Suggestion of a Full Frame Mirrorless?

Patent: A New Canon EF 50 f/1.2 & Suggestion of a Full Frame Mirrorless?

New Canon 50 f/1.2
A new patent has surfaced that shows a new design for an EF 50 f/1.2 lens. The current 50L has somewhat of a mixed reputation due to some focus shift.

Also shown is potentially a 50 f/2 for a full frame mirrorless camera as it mentions a 22mm back focus distance. Keith at [NL] is reading the patent that way, and that interpretation looks plausible. If anyone is better at reading and interpreting the patent than we are, please let us know.

    • Fno. 1.25
