We’ve heard previously about a 46mp image sensor that exists and is in testing. We’re now told that multiple large megapixel sensors exist, and one that is sure to reach market is a 39.3mp sensor.
There is also a suggestion that we will see DIGIC VI processors before the larger megapixel camera(s) reach the market in late 2013 or early 2014.
This comes from a new source, so take it with a grain of salt.
I’ve also heard from two different people that the earthquake that happened in Japan is still affecting manufacturing and development of new products at Canon, though Canon would never officially admit to such a thing.
As far as new stuff goes, we should see the APS-C segment and lenses addressed before a large megapixel camera arrives on the scene.
What can we expect in early 2013?
I’m told we’ll be seeing two seperate announcements in back to back months in 2013. We’ll see announcements in February and March, one of the announcements will be a “major” event. Sometimes the word “major” is used incorrectly.
Apparently, one of the announcements will be to introduce a second EOS-M body. The body will be slightly bigger, and have a viewfinder. They will also introduce at least two new lenses with the body. I’d expect a telephoto zoom and a fast prime.
EOS 7D Mark II
One of these announcement dates will also be for the EOS 7D replacement. No word on specs, but it’s suggested the camera/segment will get a new naming scheme.
The 40+ mp camera gets another mention and we should expect an announcement in Q1 of 2013. The camera will be physically bigger than the 5D Mark III, but will be smaller than the EOS-1D X. It’s noted that the sensor is currently in EOS-1D X styled bodies.
Lots of talk about Canon making some announcements this week for PhotoPlus in New York City. However, there is no evidence that media invites have been sent out around the globe.
Could there be an “in development” announcement that doesn’t require media invites?
It’s possible, although Canon has always tied those in with other product launches.
I’ve also heard through the grapevine that Canon USA wasn’t all too happy with the purported Photoshop’d EOS-3 with a 46.1mp sensor articles that popped up not too long ago. That in itself is quite interesting, as why would they care about something that isn’t real?
It has also been suggested Canon still has 3-4 lenses still to announce in 2012. As usual though, there is no know timeline.
It’s coming, just not as soon as you’d like
A couple of known sources have finally popped up to talk about all the high megapixel rumors floating around this site and others. While most of what we’ve posted has been [CR1], there still seems to be a level of truth to it. However, I’m told that IF there is an announcement in 2012 for a high megapixel camera, it would only be a development announcement. There is nothing in the way of marketing or production for the rumoured camera.
Canon has done a very good job in recent months locking down the rumor mill, even going as far as giving far less NDA’s to media types.
I am confident the prototypes are out there, we just may not get our hands on one for a long while yet.
