High Megapixel Camera to Come in Two Variants? [CR1]

High Megapixel Camera to Come in Two Variants? [CR1]

An unknown person has sent us a bunch of cryptic information about Canon’s roadmap over the next 6-9 months. I have been unable to confirm any of it, but hopefully this post will help shed some light on things.

We’re told that Canon will introduce a high megapixel camera in Q1 of 2015 and it will be released in two variants. What those two variants are wasn’t mentioned. I do not see Canon doing what Nikon did with the D800 and D800E, I’m thinking that the second variant could possibly be an astronomy version, like the 60Da and 20Da. The other possibility could be an EOS and Cinema EOS version of the camera, and everyone can drool at the possibility of an affordable 4K DSLR from Canon.

It was also stressed that the cameras being talked about wouldn’t be in the $8000-$9000 range like has been discussed recently, and likely cost half of that.

More to come

Multilayer Sensors are Coming From Canon [CR2]

Multilayer Sensors are Coming From Canon [CR2]

Canon has been hard at work on multi-layer sensors and they will be coming in an upcoming professional level full frame DSLR we’re told. There will be two cameras based on this technology coming in 2015, one would expect a replacement for the EOS-1D X and perhaps another professional body with a high megapixel count. There was no mention of an EOS 5D Mark IV.

The high resolution camera is expected to be announced in Q1 of 2015. Even though we have heard from places unknown that such a camera would make an appearance at PhotoPlus at the end of this month. A Canon Explorer of Light has told us they’ve been promised a high megapixel camera to come “sooner than later”.

I suspect most of this came from Photokina chatter.

High Megapixel Camera Development Announcement Mentioned Again [CR1]

High Megapixel Camera Development Announcement Mentioned Again [CR1]

Another mention of a development announcement for a high megapixel pro body from Canon coming in 2014. There were no specifications given, or a date that this could happen.

CR’s Take
I’m still not convinced this isn’t a product of the previous posts on the topic being recycled, as well as Canon’s own mention of it. With all the hype surrounding the EOS 7D Mark II and the fact we won’t see the camera until November, I can’t see anything happening for a new DSLR before the EOS 7D Mark II comes to market.

More Talk of an October Announcement of a DSLR [CR1]

More Talk of an October Announcement of a DSLR [CR1]

There has been a lot of chatter about the possibility of Canon announcing a high megapixel DSLR some time in October. I have a feeling most of this is rooted in the FM post from a little ago. We continue to receive emails stating the camera is coming and the camera isn’t coming. So for now, I have nothing that shows an imminent announcement.

If something does come in October, I have a feeling it will be a development announcement or a camera that won’t ship for a long while. There seems to be a growing concern that people are tired of waiting for Canon to release a high resolution camera. It’s also suggested there’s a growing number of Canon shooters that are buying Nikon and Sony cameras to meet their needs.

Our specifications for the EOS 7D Mark II came about three weeks prior to the launch, so if there is indeed a camera coming in October, there should be better information soon (Unless it’s a development announcement).

Canon Says Higher Resolution Sensors Are Coming Soon

Canon Says Higher Resolution Sensors Are Coming Soon

DPReview has posted their interview with Masaya Maeda, the Managing Director and Chief Executive, Image Communication Products Operations at Canon. Mr Maeda touches on a lot of subjects, like the EOS 7D Mark II and why it took so long to hit the market. As well as higher megapixel sensors, mirrorless cameras and the fact that the Canon PowerShot G7 X doesn’t use a Canon sensor (It’s most likely from Sony).

Below is a snippet from the interview.

Currently no Canon camera offers more than 22MP. Do your DSLR customers ask for higher resolution?
Maeda: Yes. We know that many of our customers need more resolution and this is under consideration. In the very near future you can expect us to show something in terms of mirrorless and also a higher resolution sensor.

A New EOS Pro Body With 46mp Next Month? [CR1]

A New EOS Pro Body With 46mp Next Month? [CR1]

thread has popped up on a forum talking about a 46mp pro Canon DSLR being launched in New York City in October for PhotoPlus. It’s also mentioned that the camera will cost in the range of $8000-$9000 USD. I have no idea if this is a troll or not, but it will surely appear other places so I might as well post it.

If the EF 11-24 f/4L is indeed real, then it makes sense to announce it with a full frame camera.

If it’s true, there will be more to come.

New EOS-1 Camera Information [CR1]

New EOS-1 Camera Information [CR1]

Not an EOS-1D X upgrade
Over at NL they’re being told to expect a new EOS-1 camera for Photokina in 2014. With Nikon perhaps readying a high megapixel D4X in time for the Olympics, Canon is apparently (finally) ready to enter the high megapixel professional space. The camera won’t be the fabled “EOS 3D”.

This new EOS-1 camera will be not be “dual pixel”, that and other new features will be saved for the successor to the EOS-1D X.

Lenses for the new camera touting resolution and image quality will be announced in the months surrounding this new EOS-1 series body.

Just Touching the Surface of Dual Pixel Technology? [CR1]

Just Touching the Surface of Dual Pixel Technology? [CR1]

Dual Pixel technology more than just AF?
NL reports that they’ve been told to expect even more new features from Canon’s Dual Pixel technology other than autofocus. Currently the tech appears in the EOS 70D and will also appear in an upgraded EOS C100. Will the C300 get a similar upgrade?

Apparently dual pixel design will need the latest generation of processing (DIGIC 6/7?) technology to realize its full potential. The benefits of this alongside new CODECS will be seen in the next Cinema EOS cameras and possibly in new high end DSLRs.

The video and stills segments of the professional lineup will get upgrades in 2014. Cinema EOS will get it first, and possibly be shown in April at NAB 2014 in Las Vegas. DSLRs will get it in the second half of the year and will most likely be shown at Photokina 2014 in Cologne, Germany.

New EOS-1 in 2014 [CR1]

New EOS-1 in 2014 [CR1]

New EOS-1 to launch in 2014
According to NL, Canon plans to launch a new EOS-1 in 2014, around the same time as a rumored Nikon D4x. This camera will be Canon’s first foray into the high megapixel realm for a DSLR. There will also be lenses to match launching at the same time as an EOS-1D Xs (name to be decided).

Apparently Canon does not want to launch this new camera the same way they did with the EOS-1D X. If you remember, Canon announced their flagship before Nikon’s D4, only to watch the D4 get announced and begin shipping before we actually saw an EOS-1D X at retailers.

EOS-1 Announcement Q2 2014? [CR1]

EOS-1 Announcement Q2 2014? [CR1]

A new pro body
Suggestions of a new EOS-1 body to be announced in Q2 of 2014 have surfaced. No detailed specs have been given for the camera, which shouldn’t be shocking this far out from an unveiling. Before the announcement, the EOS-1D X will receive a price drop and the new EOS-1 body would come at a $2000 premium. One would expect it to have a large megapixel sensor at least.

The camera wouldn’t ship until well into 2014. Apparently this information is being passed around to select “pro” dealers.

A Q2 announcement would fall in line with the World Cup in Brazil as a testing ground.
