The big megapixel camera gets bigger!
Photography Bay is reporting that a good source of theirs has told them that Canon is actively testing a 75+MP EOS-1 DSLR camera body.
I don’t find anything surprising in the megapixel count, as Canon has announced enormous megapixel sensors in the past. However, this is the first I’ve heard of an actual product using image sensors with this much resolution.
Previous rumors have placed the “big megapixel” camera from Canon in the 40-50mp range.
We do expect such a camera to make its way to us sometime in 2014.
Development announcement before years end?
There has been a bit of discussion lately about the upcoming “big megapixel” camera body from Canon. The camera is slated for release some time in 2014. We’re told that there is a possibility that the camera will get a development announcement before the years end.
We’re told there is still discussion in regards to form factor of such a camera. There’s probably an even 50/50 split in preferences between an EOS-1Dx style body or a EOS 5D Mark III style body. I fall into the latter category, the smaller, the better for me. However, there are lots of people that love the ergonomics of the EOS-1D X. I guess it’s possible there could be a mix of both styles of body.
A different source says there are 3 different sensors currently in development, all of which are above the 35mp pixel count. Canon is apparently quite motivated to make industry leading sensors again, as we should see some of that in the EOS 7D Mark II and perhaps even the 70D in the summer.
The EOS-1D X is apparently slated for replacement in late 2014 or early 2015, and Canon would like to have a large megapixel camera on the market before that happens.
A new EOS-1 body in 2014
The latest we and others are hearing is that a large megapixel camera from Canon won’t be coming until 2014. This coincides with information that Canon would be releasing 3 DSLRs in 2013 and none of them outside of the APC-S segment.
Prototype cameras with sensors beyond 40mp do exist and are in the hands of very exclusive testers. However, we’re also told that a few lenses in the lineup will need updating before a large megapixel camera hits the market for Canon. No specific lens was mentioned, but I would imagine a full frame ultra wide zoom is one of those lenses.
From the same source as above, 4 new EF lenses will be coming in 2013.
Canon’s announcement date for a new EOS-1 may be dependant on when Nikon announces the rumoured 36mp D4x, Nikon cannot have two such cameras on the market while Canon remains quiet in my opinion.
EOS 5D X?
A faster update? One suggestion from a known source is that Canon has loose plans to replace and/or update the EOS 5D Mark III quicker than the previous iterations. Could we see one some time in 2014? I would think a direct replacement would be unlikely, however a small, high performance & higher megapixel DSLR would probably have a place in the market.
*Notice how I didn’t say “EOS-3D :)”
What’s in the pipeline?
A few more confirmations about a new EF 800 f/5.6L IS II being in the works. It was stressed that it is no where near market ready and Canon will probably wait for Nikon to get their new 800 to the world. The EF 200 f/2L IS is also on the update radar, but is for the distant future.
Another source claims to have tested a new “Canon ultra-wide zoom on an EOS-1D Xs”.
A New 135L?
We have received lots of information over the last few years about a replacement to the EF 135 f/2L. It reminds me of the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, which turned out to have a lot of prototypes before it was released and caused me a lot of headaches :). The current tested prototype is said to be an EF 135 f/2L IS. A replacement seems imminent, although I’m not sure if the IS version will ever make it to market.
When is the new stuff coming?
I’m told that current NDA’s expire at the “end of the month”. I hope to know more soon in regards to announcement date(s), there is definitely more coming in 2012.

Similar information has been sent to [NL], that a 46.1mp Canon DSLR will be previewed at PhotoPlus 2012 in New York City between October 24 – October 27, 2012.
We’ve had a couple of sources confirm that a 46mp prototype Canon DSLR is in the wild, though not claimed to be anywhere near production ready. Do not expect availability until well into 2013.
