Review – EOS 6D By Gizmodo

Review – EOS 6D By Gizmodo

Great stills, not so great video
Gizmodo has reviewed the EOS 6D and found it to be a great still camera. However, they did notice the video produced by the EOS 6D is prone to pretty bad moire, something that doesn’t affect the EOS 5D Mark III.

As I’ve told most people, if serious video is your thing, get a 5D Mark III. We are hoping the moire issue can be resolved somewhat with a future firmware update.

Gizmodo Conclusion
If you are most interested in stills and don’t care that much about video quality, the 6D is a great value—it produces top-notch pictures, with very few compromises, at a lower price than we’ve ever seen. But if you are looking for the video prowess of the 5D Mark III, plan to pony up that extra $900.”

EOS 6D Review – Real World

EOS 6D Review – Real World

Review of the EOS 6D
Photographer Michael Stringer used the new Canon EOS 6D at a wedding and thinks it’s a terrific camera. Below is his review and showcases the high ISO performance of Canon’s little full frame camera.

Some of Michael’s thoughts
“In a nutshell – the 6D is a smaller, lighter and cheaper version of the 5D Mark III if you photograph static (or slow moving) subjects. Handling is different (to the 5D III) but mostly fine and easy to get used to especially if coming from a Canon 60D or similar. Image quality is excellent and predictable and noise at high iso is extremely well controlled and film-like. The build quality is very good – it feels solid but not surprisingly a step below the 5D III. WIFI and GPS are useful additions depending on your needs.”

Shooting With the EOS 6D Part 2: Costa Rica

More time with the EOS 6D
When I brought the EOS 6D to Costa Rica as my only camera body, I honestly didn’t think I’d like the camera all that much. I’ve had the luxury of using some great cameras like the EOS-1D X and EOS 5D Mark III. However, after a little over a week with it, I must say that I’m very impressed.

The Good (So far)

  • The image quality is top notch, I find colour rendition and dynamic range to be terrific.
  • Build quality, the camera doesn’t feel cheap.
  • The ergonomics are  better than I thought they’d be.
  • The center AF point is quite good.

The Bad (So far)

  • Battery life is terrible if GPS and WiFi are on.
  • There was the odd time 1/8000 would have been nice.
  • The outer AF points, while better than the 5D2, aren’t as accurate as the center point.
  • I have big hands and the control pad inside the dial can be inaccurate if not pressed perfectly.

I still don’t like the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II on the EOS 6D. Mainly because of the bulk of the lens compared to the body. The results are terrific, it just doesn’t balance well. I wouldn’t use a battery grip on a small camera, however it may feel better if you do.

I will continue to evaluate the camera during my stay in Costa Rica and work towards a full review of the EOS 6D.

Below are some images from San Jose, Costa Rica taken yesterday.

Canon Deals at Adorama, EOS 6D, EOS 7D, 70-300L & 50 f/1.8 II

Canon Deals at Adorama, EOS 6D, EOS 7D, 70-300L & 50 f/1.8 II

From Adorama
Adorama has some deals on current Canon goodies. We’re now seeing the EOS 6D drop below $2099, to the $1999 mark that it should have been at launch. The EF 50 f/1.8 II is also being reduced heavily by retailers, perhaps a replacement on the horizon? The EOS 7D is also being heavily discounted by retailers, we should see a replacement of the camera in the first half of 2013.

Shooting With the EOS 6D in Costa Rica

My vacation camera
I decided to force myself to put down the familiar and start using a camera and lens I wouldn’t normally pick up. I am down in Jaco, Costa Rica for a couple of weeks with the EOS 6D and EF 24-70 f/2.8L II. I plan to do a full review of the 6D in the next couple of months, as I may also be bringing it to Vietnam and Laos at the end of January. For now I will do an update every few days with my feelings about the camera.

So far I have found the combination to be quite nice. The EOS 6D does not feel like a “budget” camera at all. It’s a hefty little thing with great image quality and ergonomics. I do wish I had the new EF 24-70 f/4L IS, as I think it will be far better balanced on the camera. Don’t get me wrong, having an EF 24-70 f/2.8L II attached to the camera is not a bad thing.

I am getting used to it not having a joystick to move focus points like on the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS 1D X, the control pad inside the scrollwheel works quite well.

Below is an image of my son playing in the waves. The 6D got soaked with salt water by mistake and seems to have survived the ordeal unscathed.

The image quality is top notch, the color and dynamic range of the new 20mp sensor is quite good. I plan to head out in the evenings and test out the high ISO performance.

EOS 6D Video
I have yet to do any testing of the video capabilities of the EOS 6D, as that is not a strength of mine. I may get into it a bit later in the trip.

Canon EOS 6D Firmware 1.1.2

Canon EOS 6D Firmware 1.1.2

FAQ: EOS 6D Latest Firmware Update [Version 1.1.2 - Added 13 December 2012]
Firmware Version 1.1.2 incorporates the following fix.

Fixes a phenomenon which prevents movie files shot using EOS 6D Digital SLR cameras from being played back on YouTube.

Helpful Information

Firmware version 1.1.2 may present some Video Snapshot limitations. Please review the two scenarios and the workaround provided below.

  1. EOS 6D running Firmware Version 1.0.9:
If a video snapshot captured when the camera was running firmware 1.0.9 is combined with a video snapshot created by a camera which was running firmware 1.1.2, the resulting video snapshot album will be corrupted.
  2. EOS 6D running Firmware Version 1.1.2:
If you try to add a video snapshot from a camera running firmware 1.1.2 to the video snapshot album created when the camera was running firmware 1.0.9, a warning message “Cannot select this movie” will appear and the video snapshot cannot be added to the album.

Please follow the following workaround to help addresses the two scenarios described above.

  1. Shoot a video snapshot and create a video snapshot album.
  2. Import the captured video snapshot album to your computer.
  3. Start ImageBrowser EX, an application bundled with the EOS 6D.
  4. Select the video snapshot album, and select [Edit Movie] in the [Edit] tab.
  5. MovieEdit Task will start.
  6. Select [Add Image] and select video snapshot album to add the movie snapshot.
  7. Select [Save] and [Save image type], and then click [Save].

Firmware Version 1.1.2 is for cameras with firmware version 1.0.9. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.1.2, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

When updating the firmware of your camera, please first review the instructions for downloading thoroughly before you download the firmware. Links to the firmware are below.

Canon EOS 6D Rating by DXOMark

Canon EOS 6D Rating by DXOMark

From DXOMark
DXO has released their impressions of the Canon EOS 6D pretty quickly. The camera receives a sensor score 82, which is on part with most of the Canon lineup.

From DXOMark
“The EOS 6D offers a well-balanced performance across all three testing metrics, doing enough to put it into 10th place overall on the sensor rankings. Given the price, this does offer very good value for money, matched only by the Nikon D600. It suggests that this new market segment could be a real hotbed of key models for the major manufacturers and is therefore one to watch carefully.”

CR’s Take
I just got my hands on an EOS 6D today, so I’m not yet a good person to ask as to whether or not the camera is a winner. I do like the size and weight, I’m all about trimming weight wherever I can in my kit. Give me a week or so, then you can start asking me your questions.
