4K Products Coming From Canon [CR2]

4K Products Coming From Canon [CR2]

We’re told to expect “a bunch” of 4K products from Canon, starting in early 2015. There will be products in the EOS line, Cinema EOS line and possibly the VIXIA line.

Both the EOS C300 and EOS C500 will see updates in 2015, with the EOS C300 replacement gaining at least 4K. We have no idea if Canon will follow ARRI into 6K territory or not, but judging by Canon’s strategy thus far, I don’t see that happening. Though a good source keeps telling us Canon has its sight set on being the “A camera”, and that there could be a different form factor Cinema EOS product shown at NAB.

As for 4K DSLR’s, we weren’t told which camera(s) would get the capability. I asked if the 7D Mark II could possibly get 4K via firmware, to which there was no clear answer.

Canon Announces New Cinema EOS C100 & C300 Kits

Canon Announces New Cinema EOS C100 & C300 Kits

October 20, 2014, B&H Photo, New York City – After updating its popular EOS C100 and C300 cameras to feature Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology earlier in the year, Canon now offers two unique kits for each model. The C100 kit pairs the camera with an Atomos Ninja 2 monitor/recorder, while the C300 kit adds Zacuto accessories to give the camera an ENG-style design.

The C100 kit includes the camera body, 24-105mm f/4L lens, and an Atomos Ninja 2 external monitor/recorder to take advantage of the camera’s uncompressed 1080p 8-bit 4:2:2 HDMI output. The Ninja 2 then gives you the option of recording that signal in 10-bit Apple ProRes LT, 422, or HQ codecs to an included 240GB SanDisk Extreme SSD. An HDMI cable and an articulating arm for attaching the Ninja 2 to the C100 round out the kit.

The new Canon C300 EF-mount kit is designed to provide a complete shoulder-mounted shooting solution by outfitting the camera with Zacuto accessories. The first accessory is the C300/500 Helmet and Coldshoe Handle Kit, which screws into the top of the camera and provides additional threaded accessory holes and a wooden top handle. The next accessory is Zacuto’s Z-Finder for the C300/500, which slides over the camera’s LCD screen, turning it into an electronic viewfinder. To better position the monitor for shoulder-mounted use, the Z-Finder comes with a mounting kit for attaching to the Helmet. To place the camera on your shoulder, Zacuto’s VCT Universal Baseplate is provided, featuring a cushioned shoulder pad and 15mm rods to support additional accessories. Completing the kit is a Grip Relocator, which lets you mount the C300’s grip on the baseplate’s 15mm rods for comfortable handling and camera control.

The Next Cinema EOS Camera Will Be….. [CR2]

The Next Cinema EOS Camera Will Be….. [CR2]

We’re told that the next Cinema EOS camera to be released will be a replacement to the EOS C100 and not the C300 or C500. No details were given as to when the camera would be released or any specifications, but I would assume it’ll come before NAB 2015 in April.

Saving a new C300 or C500 for that show would make marketing sense. Although, we do hear that Canon has plans for an over the shoulder style Cinema EOS camera, and perhaps that could be shown at NAB.

What’s Next for Cinema EOS?

What’s Next for Cinema EOS?

After a weekend at Cine Gear 2014 in Los Angeles, it became apparent to me that we won’t be seeing any replacements to the EOS C100, EOS C300 or EOS C500 anytime soon. We were told that the EOS C300 is selling “extremely well” and that the EOS C100 is also selling “better than expected”. The EOS C500 is a bit different and isn’t quite as popular as Canon had hoped, but it could be that the camera is in no mans land as far as price/performance and what people are using $20,000 cameras for.

I did get the impression that Canon does plan to be aggressive in the “A camera” space and will take direct aim at the king ARRI. I’m hypothesizing this point, but after talking to various people, I get the feeling that Canon is serious about clawing its way into the professional, large budget cinema market. With the consumer space in photography shrinking, it does make sense to put resources into new markets for growth.

I don’t think we’ll see any Cinema EOS announcements until next April at NAB 2015.
