June is the month
Received information from various places that Canon will announce 2 new cameras in June (not including PowerShot updates).
One camera will be an EOS (650D) and the other will be a mirrorless entry.
I’m sure we’re going to start seeing more information in the coming weeks. I also expect Canon to spend a bit of marketing dollars on a mirrorless camera. Maybe we’ll see some teasers.
A Translation of a Japanese Interview
“Canon has been forced to change their plan for 2011 because of the earthquake on the 11th March 2011 in Japan and floods in Thailand, but they are going to be back to the normal operation in 2012.”
Summary of interview with Masaya Maeda, Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Image Communication Products Operation at Canon Inc.
He stated that they are planning to release mirrorless compact system cameras in 2012.
Concept of Canon’s mirrorless system
- Try to develop a compact camera which features high image quality.
- Trying to make cameras smaller and more compact, mirrorless system could be the key.
- Miniaturization of cameras is the top priority, which means the cameras may have a different mount to the EF mount.
- For mirrorless cameras, being able to change lenses is certainly a big merit, however, the ratio of use of interchangeable lenses is very low. We have to think on how we can make users use interchangeable lenses more, that is very critical. We have to look into the whole system as well as miniaturization.
- All DSLRs featuring EF mount would be getting smaller and smaller with high image quality. For interchangeable lenses, we are going to stick to EF mount.
- EF lenses are being developed and extended this will include shooting movies. The compatibility of the new system and the EF system is very important.
- As a premise of the new mount for mirrorless system, “the image sensor will be larger than the regular standard size” would be necessary.
- The quality of image sensor will be improving. Having said that, in time downsizing the sensor is coming in the future.
C300 movie cameras
- C300 contains various ideas of camera systems including new mounts. C300 was made from a lot of feedback from people in the movie industry, a good example is C gamma.
- New unique lenses for movies are going to be marketed in 2012, Auto Focus for movies and the smooth movement of aperture are being developed.”

The rumoured lens announcements from a few weeks back have yet to materialize. Beyond what I was told then, I haven’t heard a single thing about the lenses in question.
Lens announcements are always the toughest to pin down. One of the major reasons is, Canon doesn’t have media events for them if they’re being announced alone. If a DSLR is involved, they’re a little easier to get information on.
I have heard some murmurs about a DSLR announcement before or at CES, nothing concrete though.
I haven’t had one PowerShot camera rumor in a while.
Canon at CES?
Yes, they’re there. They’ll be showing their gear at booth 13304. For the moment however, it looks like they won’t be showing anything new. All this could change literally overnight.
Coming Attractions: New Canon Digital SLR Camera Under Development
HOLLYWOOD, California, November 3, 2011/TOKYO, November 4, 2011 – Canon Inc. today announced that the company is developing a new-concept EOS-series digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera. Incorporating an enhanced version of the video-capture capability offered in the current EOS-series lineup, the new camera will be ideally suited for cinematographic and other digital high-resolution production applications. The model will be equipped with a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor and, enabling the recording of 4K video (at a frame rate of 24P, with Motion-JPEG compression), will make possible the type of exceptional image quality and sublime imaging expression to be expected from the next generation of “EOS Movies.”
The announcement coincides with the launch of the Cinema EOS System, marking Canon’s full-fledged entry into the digital high-resolution production industry. The new professional digital cinematography system spans the lens, digital cinema camera and digital SLR camera product categories.
Further details regarding the new EOS digital SLR camera currently under development, including the product name, specifications and scheduled launch date, have yet to be decided.
EOS Movie: A New Industry Standard
Movie recording has been a standard feature in all newly introduced Canon EOS-series digital SLR cameras since the launch of the EOS 5D Mark II in November 2008. A Star Is Born: Canon Launches New Digital Cinema Camera For High-Resolution Motion Picture Production
HOLLYWOOD, California, November 3, 2011/TOKYO, November 4, 2011 – Canon Inc. and Canon U.S.A., Inc. today raised the curtain on an all-new interchangeable-lens digital cinema camera that combines exceptional imaging performance with outstanding mobility and expandability to meet the demanding production needs of today’s motion picture industry. Star-Studded Supporting Cast
Equipped with an EF lens mount, the EOS C300 is supported by an all-star cast of high-performance EF lenses, not only the wide array of interchangeable EF lenses for EOS SLR cameras that have earned the trust and respect of photographers around the world, but also the EF cinema lenses in the newly announced Cinema EOS System. When outfitted with a Canon EF lens, the C300′s peripheral illumination correction automatically corrects for vignetting in accordance with each lens’s optical characteristics, and enables iris control from the camera. Canon EF lenses also enable the recording of such metadata as the name of the lens used, aperture setting and shutter speed.i
Show-Stopping High-Resolution Full-HD Performance
The Canon EOS C300/C300 PL’s newly developed Super 35 mm-equivalent CMOS sensor incorporates approximately 8.29 million effective pixels and has a pixel size that is larger than that for conventional professional camcorders, enabling greater light-gathering capabilities for enhanced sensitivity and reduced noise. The sensor reads Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) video signals for each of the three RGB primary colors, decreasing the incidence of moiré while realizing high resolution with 1,000 horizontal TV lines.
Supported by a heightened signal read-out speed, the CMOS sensor reduces rolling shutter skews, a phenomenon prevalent with CMOS sensors in which fast-moving subjects may appear diagonally distorted. Additionally, the powerful combination of the sensor with Canon’s high-performance DIGIC DV III image processor facilitates high-precision gamma processing and smooth gradation expression.
In addition to MPEG-2 Full HD (MPEG2 422@HL compliant) compression, the EOS C300/C300 PL employs 4:2:2 color sampling for high-resolution performance that minimizes the appearance of “jaggies” at chroma edges. Additionally, with a maximum recording rate of 50 Mbps, the camera supports the recording of high-quality video.
The camera’s video and audio recording file format adopts the industry-standard MXF (Material eXchange Format), an open source file format ideally suited for non-linear editing systems. Recording to versatile, readily available CF cards, the EOS C300/C300 PL realizes high cost-performance and, equipped with two CF card slots, makes possible the simultaneous recording of video data to two CF cards.
Ready for Action
With a compact body design measuring 5.2 (w) x 7.0 (h) x 6.7 (d) inches, the Canon EOS C300/C300 PL delivers exceptional maneuverability, enabling shooting from vantage points all but inaccessible to large cinema cameras, such as close to the ground for high-impact low-angle shots, and alongside walls. In accordance with on-location shooting needs, the camera can be outfitted with a handle, grip, thumb rest and monitor unit, and offers an array of industry-standard terminals, including HD/SD-SDI video output for the external recording of high-quality video content. When using a WFT-E6B wireless file transmitter for EOS digital SLR cameras (sold separately), the EOS C300/C300 PL can be controlled remotely by means of such common devices as smartphones or tablet PCs.
The camera is equipped with four start/stop buttons positioned at various locations to satisfy any preferred camera-holding style, and can be outfitted with a variety of third-party accessories, including matte boxes, follow focuses and external video and audio recorders. The unit also achieves seamless integration with third-party editing systems and provides added peace of mind through its dust-proof, drip-proof construction and built-in cooling system.
The new camera allows users to adjust image quality to match that of professional camcorders and EOS-series digital SLR cameras, and offers Canon Log Gamma, enabling flat image quality with subdued contrast and sharpness for maximum freedom in post-production editing and processing. In addition to frame rates of 59.41i, 50.00i, 29.97P, 25.00P and 23.98P, the EOS C300/C300 PL features a 24.00p mode, matching the 24 frame-per-second frame rate of film cameras for high compatibility with common film-production workflows.
Other features include fast-motion shooting, achieved by capturing fewer frames per second to create action up to 60x normal speed, and slow-motion down to 1/2.5xii made possible by capturing more frames per second. Frame rates between 1 and 60 frames per second (fps)iii can be adjusted in increments of 1 fps. Additionally, a selection of Custom Pictures lets users freely adjust image quality for greater control over how content looks.
Pricing and availability

Below is a post that appeared on the GTC forum in the UK. Apparently they will be appearing in November, as we’ve reported previously.
“They will be badged as EOS, despite the fact they are video cameras, and there will be two versions – one for EF lenses, the other with an PL mount. I’m guessing here but the PL mount camera may offer more options than the EF version – e.g. SDI out and genlock… etc in the same way that the XF300/305 cameras have differentiated themselves.
“Its a Super35 4K sensor, but from what I have seen only records 1080 in-camera, using the same XF codec – i.e. 4:2:2 @ 50mbps. Perhaps the PL version will output 4K thru SDI?
“The size of the camera looks similar to that of the FS100, but more rounded/ergonomic. It has a similar LCD screen on top, but it seems more flexible – i.e. allowing for greater viewing angle/for versatility.
“This could be a killer camera, and one well worth waiting for if any of you guys are thinking of buying a F3/FS100 or AF100…”

I took a day off to clear the head. It was much needed.
After nothing showed up Wednesday, we look to the future of the Canon lineup. I’ll rank what I have as far as information on the next bodies and lenses.
- 5D Mark III or Similar - The hype machine is building every day. Everyone is ready for their next full frame body. We’ve had Q3/Q4 2011 for a long while for the camera. 28mp and 7D af were the latest specs. We always hear “raw video” as well.
- 1Ds Mark IV or Similar - Everyone is wondering where it is, and there is next to zero information about it. All I’ve been told from very good people is late 2011 or even into 2012 for any type of announcement.
- 1D Mark V – It’s been suggested a couple of times we’d see this camera before a 1Ds Mark IV.
- New Body i.e. 3D – We had a recent full frame rumor, it has yet to come to fruition.
There’s going to be some significant changes in the Canon DSLR lineup over the next year I think. I know the mention of a 5D Mark III makes some people hyperventilate.
- 24-70 f/2.8 II - It’s coming, the patent exists. When? Makes sense to arrive with a 5D Mark III. All the signs point to no IS in the lens.
- 35 f/1.4L II – It seems to be wanted, although I love the current one. I haven’t heard anything about it in a while.
- 50 f/1.2L II – More talk about this lens than you’d think. Not sure what to make of the chatter. It has a bit of bad PR with its focus shift.
- 24-105 f/4L II – Upgraded IS and the new kit lens for the 5D3.
- 135 f/1.8L – Speed up and replace an absolute classic lens in the 135 f/2L? It’s constantly talked about.
- 200 f/3.5L IS Macro – The big macro is getting replaced, it’s a nice niche lens they don’t need large scale manufacturing for.
- 90 f/2.8L Tilt-Shift – Another lens they’d be smart to upgrade. There’s a lot of tilt-shift portrait work going on.
- 17-40 f/4L IS - An ultra wide angle lens with IS is missing from the EF lineup, Nikon has one.
I’ve said 2011 would be a big lens year for Canon. I still stand behind that. Although, lenses are always harder to get information on than camera bodies.
Bear in mind this list is an accumulation of things I’ve been sent.
London, UK, 13th May 2010 – Canon today announces the achievement of its latest manufacturing milestone, with the combined production of EOS series film and digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras passing the 40 million mark.
The EOS series, which stands for “Electro Optical System” and also carries the name of the Greek goddess of the dawn, was first introduced in 1987. Since its launch, the system has seen a series of groundbreaking advances in technology. Accelerating user demand has resulted in increased production levels, taking total manufacturing to over 40 million units, including 20 million EOS digital models. The milestone also marks the fastest-ever production period in the history of the EOS range:
- In 1987, the first-ever EOS SLR, the EOS 650, was produced at Canon’s manufacturing facility in Fukushima, Japan
- By 1997, manufacturing of EOS cameras had passed the 10 million mark, reaching the milestone within 10 years
- In 2003, the 20 millionth EOS camera was produced, doubling the previous 10million landmark in just six years
- In December 2007, the EOS series’ 20-year anniversary, production of EOS SLR cameras rose past 30 million – just four years after passing 20 million
- In April 2010, Canon reached its current 40 million production milestone – rising from 30 million units in just two years and four months.
- The EOS series was launched as a completely new system of AF SLR cameras, incorporating the world’s first electronic mount that achieved complete electronic control throughout the entire camera system.
