EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II Replacement [CR1]

We reported previously that the next “L” lens from Canon would be a prime. We don’t know the focal length, but the 35mm f/1.4 is the likeliest candidate for replacement.

Canon hasn’t released an f/2.8 zoom since the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, but that could be changing some time in the next year. We’re told An f/2.8 replacement for the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II is likely and that the focal length could change slightly, something like an EF 15-35 f/2.8L was suggested.

If you look at the lineage of the current lens, it has changed focal lengths a couple of times. The first in the line was the EF 20-35 f/2.8L and then the EF 17-35 f/2.8L and most recently two version of the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L

Event photographers still crave the fastest lens possible for the job, and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II could use a performance refresh.

I don’t expect such a lens to arrive any time soon, as the manufacturing demands of the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and EF 11-24 f/4L probably won’t be quelled for quite some time yet.

Friend of the site Dustin Abbott has completed his review of the brand new Samyang 135mm f/2 ED UMC manual focus lens. Dustin came away thoroughly impressed with the optics of the $549 Samyang, and thinks it’s better than Canon’s 135mm f/2L in that regard.

As always, the review is a good one with lots of sample images, as well as a video version of the review. As always with Samyang lenses, it comes down to whether or not you’re willing to sacrifice focus aids such as autofocus and focus confirmation (for Canon) for great optics and a lower price.

I would be happy to own this lens – no question.  The question is whether or not I would choose it over a lens like the Canon 135mm f/2L despite the fact that that the Samyang beats the pants off it optically.  As an owner of the 135L, I can’t say that I am personally compelled to make that switch.  But if you are in the market for a 135mm f/2 lens and want both better optics and a cheaper price, this lens is worth a very long look.  It has the ability to produce images that are amongst the finest possible with this focal length.

A new video leaked today showing prototype technology that looks to potentially solve focusing for video. A Commercial and bts from Dustin Poteet – MoVI operator – demonstrates technology from Redrock Micro on a Canon 5D MKII that continuously tracks focus on any subject and between subjects. The prototype seems to use Redrock’s existing microRemote wireless remote focus and microTape sonar rangefinder hooked together. This is billed as a “proof of concept” that is better than Canon’s own dual pixel because it works on any camera and lens, focuses on any type of subject (not just faces), works under any lighting conditions, and has a “very fluid and organic feel to it.”

There were no specifications about the technology in the video, but I suspect we’ll be hearing more about it next month at NAB.

CPN has posted another article about the Canon EOS 5DS with thoughts from a Canon Explorer of Light. This time Fernando Guerra expresses his feelings about the camera and how it does with his architectural photography workflow. I imagine the EOS 5DS will be the choice over the EOS 5DS R for this time of work. There’s a much higher chance of moire effects when shooting architecture, and a lot of photographers don’t want to add another step to their processing time.

He adds: “I don’t need a camera that weighs four or five kilos and has a lens that looks like a basket. I’m more like a photojournalist than a traditional architectural photographer, who will usually have a view camera with all the movements. That was the way, 15 years ago, but not now. I can have two Canon 5DSs on my shoulders – I always work with two cameras – for less than half the price of a medium format camera. The world’s changed and cameras are smaller, better and faster. I don’t need medium format and I’m not going to look [at using it] again.”
