Review – Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS

By Canon Rumors | July 1, 2015 | Canon Reviews

Dustin has completed his review of the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS for Canon Rumors. I’m glad he did, as this is one of my favourite Canon lenses. I fell in love with it while in Kenya and you can read my review of the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS here.

I’m frequently asked “Which lens should I buy, the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS or the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS?”

I generally give everyone the same answer:

If you have a 400mm or longer prime that takes teleconverters easily, get the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS. You’ll love how compact it is and its stellar performance. You’re also more likely to bring it along if bag space is at a premium.

If you don’t have a long prime, and don’t plan to get one, then get the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II. You’ll like having the extra length and the ability to use Canon teleconverters in an emergency.

Dustin is also a big fan of the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS:

In conclusion, the truth of the matter is that I really, really love this lens. It has a few limitations, sure, but also has a great combination of killer optics and a great focal length in a sturdy and fairly compact body. It is a fabulous travel lens and a credible wildlife option. It even does a great job as a portrait or event lens when you don’t have a more natural option. I love it as a landscape lens as well. It isn’t cheap, but this is a pro grade lens that produces pro grade results.

Canon Releases Recommended Lenses List for EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R

Canon Releases Recommended Lenses List for EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R

By Canon Rumors | June 30, 2015 | Canon Lens Rumors

Canon has released their list of recommended lenses according to The-Digital-Picture.

Notable omissions from the list are the EF 35mm f/1.4L, EF 70-200mm f/4L IS, EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II, TS-E 45mm f/2.8 and EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS. Oddly enough, all of these lenses are on the “to-be-replaced” soon list (“soon” is always a relative term with lenses).

A couple of other oddities are the EF 50mm f/1.8 II appearing on the list and not the brand new EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, as well as the EF 50mm f/1.4 making an appearance.

Zoom Lenses

  • EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM
  • EF 11-24mm f/4L USM
  • EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM
  • EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
  • EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM
  • EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
  • EF 70-200mm f/4L USM
  • EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

Tamron Product Advisory for Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R

Tamron Product Advisory for Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R

By Canon Rumors | June 30, 2015 | Third Party Lenses

A notice regarding compatibility issues with the EOS 5Ds and the EOS 5DsR, and availability of firmware update service (JUNE 2015)

Dear users and potential purchasers of Tamron interchangeable lenses for Canon.
Thank you for being a valued customer of Tamron products.

We have learned that the AF functions of the following interchangeable lenses for Canon do not function in Live View mode when used on the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5DsR  which went on sale in June 2015.

We sincerely apologize to all users and potential purchasers for any inconvenience the issue may cause.

Firmware update service is already available as this is the same case when EOS Rebel T6s and the EOS Rebel T6i were released.  Also, Model A011 with the latest firmware for panning shot treatment is compatible and functions properly with these new cameras.

The full list of affected lenses is after the break.

Sigma Product Advisory for EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R

Sigma Product Advisory for EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R

By Canon Rumors | June 30, 2015 | Third Party Lenses

Sigma issued a service notice (from Sigma Japan) regarding a Live View issue withthe Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R camera bodies and some Sigma zoom lenses.

Phenomenon
When the Live View Mode button on the camera body is pressed, the operation stops without displaying images on the rear LCD monitor.

More Information

  • If your lens was updated to be compatible with the EOS 760D / 750D, then it will also work with the 5DS / 5DS R. Otherwise you will have to send it to Sigma for a free firmware update.
  • Lenses shipped after May 11, 2015, already have the new firmware and will work in Live View with any current Canon DSLR.
  • Users of the 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports – the only Global Vision lens to be affected by this issue, see list below – can do this at home using the USB Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro.
