Medium Format Announcement a “Longshot at Best”

Medium Format Announcement a “Longshot at Best”

We’re told by a pretty good source that any announcement in regards to a medium format entry by Canon is a “longshot at best”. While Canon is always doing R&D on the concept, there is “nothing that is imminent”.

Another source has told us that these rumors could have “some truth to them”, but wouldn’t be shown until the Canon Expo in 2015. Canon does a technology expo every 5 years, and tend to show a lot of technologies that may or may not ever end up as a consumer product.

I’m of the belief that medium format at this time wouldn’t make much sense, especially since Canon still doesn’t have a high resolution 35mm DSLR.

Canon Doing Market Research on Medium Format?

Canon Doing Market Research on Medium Format?

A new report suggests Canon is sending out questionnaires to “key users” which includes some questions about medium format. Most of the questions were gear towards image quality, usage scenarios and lens requirements. Most of the questionnaire was still about DSLRs and video, and that the “MF stuff was new”.

Rumors are running rampant that Nikon will launch a medium format body using the 50mp sensor that everyone else is using, and we’ve heard the same about Sony entering the field. Canon has been looking at the feasibility for years, and have said they want to enter more “professional” markets due to the declining consumer market.

Canon Interested in Hasselblad?

Canon Interested in Hasselblad?

The quick and direct answer? No.

A lot has come in over the weekend in regards to the reports that Ventizz Capital will be selling off its ownership of the Swedish camera maker Hasselblad. It’s no secret that Hasselblad is in financial trouble, as the whole medium format segment seems to be under capitalized and lacking direction.

Does Canon have any interest in purchasing Hasselblad? I don’t think so. Canon did have Hasselblad’s books open a few years ago, but that was probably more of a tire kicking exercise than actual interest in purchasing the company.

If I had to wager on a purchaser for Hasselblad, I would go with Silverfleet Capital, who owns Danish medium format company PhaseOne. The second option could be Sony, although I think they’ll enter the segment on their own.

Off Brand: Sony Readying Branded Medium Format System?

Off Brand: Sony Readying Branded Medium Format System?

There has been a lot of rumors about Canon making a move into the medium format segment, it’s even been suggested we’ll get a development announcement for such a camera at Photokina in September of this year. Canon has recently moved into security cameras and industrial cameras to find growth in new markets, it would make sense to give an EOS branded medium format system a go.

Sony, a big manufacturer of medium format sensors for the likes of Hasselblad are rumored to be readying a medium format system of their own. It would use the 50mp sensor currently found in the upcoming Hasselblad H5D-50C.

Sensor information:
Sensor Type:  50 Megapixels CMOS (8272 x 6200, 5.3 × 5.3 μm)
Sensor Dimensions:  32.9 x 43.8mm (sensor is physically 70% larger than a Full Frame sensor)
Image Size:  RAW 3FR capture 65MB on average. TIFF 8 bit: 154MB (on the Hasselblad H5D-50c).

It’s noted that Sony has no interest in competing with Hasselblad or Phase One and that their medium format camera would be something “completely different”. Perhaps a compact MF system?

Sony is being quite aggressive in trying to find new markets in still cameras, and if the system is priced affordably for medium format, they could have a winner if this true.

An EOS Canon Medium Format System [CR1]

An EOS Canon Medium Format System [CR1]

EOS Medium Format?
It’s mentioned over at [NL] that a Canon move into medium format would still be branded under the EOS name.

This makes sense, as Canon would have the EOS M line, the EOS line, the Cinema EOS line and a higher resolution EOS MF line. There is reportedly a thought within Canon that there are enough professional photographers out there that would want to “distinguish” their file output from standard DSLR users.

Big Megapixel Tidbits from the Week [CR1]

Big Megapixel Tidbits from the Week [CR1]

The Next EOS-1?
We’re told that their is a 44.7mp camera in heavy testing. However, the test cameras are eating batteries when shooting in 4K mode. Development is still continuing on the sensor, batteries and software.

I expect a development announcement for this camera sometime in late 2013 or early 2014.

 Medium Format
Another two people have said Canon will announce a medium format solution for Photokina next September. The big push is towards MF,  but probably won’t see availability until well into 2015.

We’re also told by a second person that such a medium format venture could be a unique arrangement with a current medium format manufacturer. Canon is serious about medium format and will continue to develop a strategy to become the market leader fairly quickly.

A grain of salt on these bits of information, as they’re from unknown sources.

A larger EF mount?
More talk about a Canon medium format system.

It’s suggested nothing will be announced until Canon has a complete “system”. Which means, lenses. A larger version of the EF lens mount will be created and lenses will be influenced by Canon’s newest cinema lenses.

The goal with product development is to have a “show stealing” announcement for Photokina 2014.

This and that
A few people have written in to confirm that Canon is exploring the possibilities of entering into the medium format segment.

We’re told nothing is imminent, but things could change quickly in the next few months. How long this has been going on is unknown, but it does sound like it’s a real possibility.

No one has confirmed or denied that Phase One is the medium format company in question.

Over at NL, they received an outright dismissal to the concept. However, a second source said Canon is going to be all in, and will announce in a big way some time in 2014.

This and That

This and That

Canon Medium Format?
A lot of discussion around the web about whether or not the 1D X is really a unification of the flagship line. A lot of people want that big megapixel studio camera.

[NL] posted an interesting quote from an interview with Canon Japan recently.

While we hear the voices, we want to see what the actual sales numbers will be for the 1D X and so determine how many 10,000s of customers we might be losing if we do not introduce a higher resolution camera and if the projected profitability of a higher resolution 24×36 mm format camera will justify development, marketing, and manufacturing investments , or if there is a sustainable market for the even greater costs of development, marketing, and manufacturing medium format cameras and lenses – an area where we have no internal expertise.

A few people I have spoken to desire a flagship camera that is high megapixel. They would like performance beyond what could be had for $2500 or so in a 5D Mark III.

I haven’t heard of a medium format prototype within Canon, however I have heard in the past that Canon has considered purchasing a medium format company. I’ve personally never understood why they would, they are more than capable of entering the market themselves.

Canon Mirrorless [CR1]
Will Canon target the niche market with any sort of mirrorless camera in the future? That’s what one person told me this week. There’s no interest in the company in releasing an NEX or Nikon 1 kind of mirrorless.

B&H Deal of the day
B&H has the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II in stock and selling for $2074 until January 7, 2012.

Apple, EVIL & a Profile

Apple, EVIL & a Profile

Collaboration with Apple?
I’ve received a few pieces of information about an upcoming collaboration between Apple and Canon. What that collaboration is hasn’t been spelled out to me. It could be with the upcoming Final Cut Pro 8, or maybe something more.

Canon Wants a Medium Format Company?
I’m not sure if stuff I’ve written in the past is getting recycled, but I’ve had a rash of comments recently about Canon’s desire to purchase a medium format company. We’ve heard before they’ve had talks with Hasselblad. It could be more of the same.

Canon Mirrorless
I’ve received emails recently saying we’ll see an EVIL announcement in May. I rate that CR negative 5. The best information I have is that Canon is still in the exploratory stages with a mirrorless solution. There’s no rush to get something to market.
