We have confirmed that a high megapixel camera is coming from Canon in 2015 and it will be around 50mp. The camera will not be an EOS-1 style body, so don’t expect the price to be above $4000.
We have yet to confirm when in 2015 the camera is coming, as the exact date may be unknown to Canon at the time of writing this.
More to come once more is confirmed.
Some of what was in this previous post has been confirmed as far as resolution and body style.
The Big Megapixel Camera
According to Northlight, they’ve been told a new full frame camera in a “1D” form factor is being tested in Asia.
We have heard similar things in the last few weeks, unfortunately without any sort of specifications or features of the camera(s). I am told, that they are not the 1D X or the 1D C.
We’ve had from two separate places that a large megapixel camera is on the horizon. It was said that such a product could come “sooner than you’d think”.
There are various reports that Canon won’t release the big 35+ mp camera until 2013. I’ve even heard the suggestion they’ll come in at 40mp+. Canon does feel that their 20mp range for DSLRs is the best course for the moment. Customer demand will probably dictate whether or not they get into the big megapixel market. I do feel it’s inevitable that it’ll happen in the next 12 months.
There’s a big price gap between the 5D Mark III at $3500 and the 1D X at $6799 that I think needs filled. APS-H is dead, so something has to go in there around $4500-$5000. Judging by the initial sales of the 5D Mark III, people are willing to pay a lot of money for high end digital SLRs.
More pixels are coming
A suggestion that a high megapixel camera is coming from Canon, and could be introduced near the end of 2012. Alongside the camera would come new ultra wide angle lens(es). It was suggested both a zoom and a prime in the area of 16mm.
I warn that this sort of conjecture will be a regular occurrence going forward I think. There is a large number of people in the community that desire a 35+ megapixel camera from Canon.
Some have suggested the upcoming 4K DSLR will be the high megapixel camera. I don’t believe that to be true, as the high megapixel count is definitely a request of the photographic community, and paying for high end video features is probably not something that would make the segment too happy.
Less is more?
The new Canon mantra? A long while ago, we had heard the next version of the 5D Mark III would sport a 30+ megapixel file. We’ve heard recently that the Nikon D800 would be announced with a 36mp sensor.
The latest I’ve heard about the 5D Mark III’s sensor, and it comes from multiple places. Is we’re going to see it remain in the neighbourhood of 21mp. I’ve been told both 21mp or 22mp from various people.
The most consistent mention is March for an announcement. I think they’ll announce a 5D mark III type camera after the February 7, 2012 announcement of the Nikon D800.
4K EOS Camera
The announced development of a 4K Canon EOS DSLR could make some specs that come out hard to decipher. I believe a high megapixel EOS body is coming. The question is whether it would be the 5D3 or the new 4K DSLR.
