Canon’s next mirrorless?
Along with last week’s 7D spec list, we also received what is said to be the next EOS-M camera. A lot of people haven’t jumped on the EOS-M system yet, whether it’s the bad rap the AF gets, or the lack of lenses in the system, sales are quite weak for the little EOS camera. Most people seem to want something a little bit higher end, or at least be able to add accessories to improve the usability of the camera.
- 24mp APS-C Sensor
- New generation AF system
- DIGIC V
- Removable Electronic Viewfinder (Very high resolution)
- Optional grip attachment
- Slightly larger than the current EOS M
- Introduced with 3 more lenses
- $999 USD
Now, all of that sounds like pretty much everyones wish list, so take this CR1 rumor with a grain of salt. I will say that the next EOS M camera is definitely pointing to being higher end from other information we’ve received. An entry level EOS M system camera could be coming in early 2014 and sit in the sub $500 category.
New Canon 50 f/1.2
A new patent has surfaced that shows a new design for an EF 50 f/1.2 lens. The current 50L has somewhat of a mixed reputation due to some focus shift.
Also shown is potentially a 50 f/2 for a full frame mirrorless camera as it mentions a 22mm back focus distance. Keith at [NL] is reading the patent that way, and that interpretation looks plausible. If anyone is better at reading and interpreting the patent than we are, please let us know.
- Example 1
- Focal length f = 51.70mm
- Fno. 1.25
- Half angle of view ω = 22.71 °
- Image height 21.64mm
- 105.65mm length lens
- BF 40.00mm
- Nine 6 groups lens configuration
- One one aspherical surface
- Maximum effective diameter 45.16mm
- Example 4
- Focal length f = 50.00mm
- Fno. 2.06
- Half angle of 23.40mm
- Image height 21.64mm
- Length 72.62mm lens
- BF 28.86mm
- Eight four group lens configuration
- No aspherical
- Maximum effective diameter 33.34mm

Canon EOS M
Below is the new Canon mirrorless camera and EF-M 22mm f/2 Lens.
The folks at [DI] posted what appears to be the first image of the new Canon EOS M mirrorless camera.

We should see the new Canon mirrorless next Monday, details are still being confirmed about specifications and all that.
Don’t expect anything too “retro” or “rangefinder-esque”, as this is going to be a mass market consumer electronics type of camera. It’ll be more Nikon 1 than Fuji X-Pro 1.
I will post more when I can, a lot of what’s going around is pretty contradictory. Canon seems to have done a good job plugging leaks. :)
We’ve mentioned in teh past that the upcoming mirrorless camera from Canon would have the G1 X sensor. While an apparent prototype exists using the sensor, the coming camera is apparently an APS-C sized sensor based around the 18mp sensor in the Rebel T4i (Hopefully the rubber grip isnt the same).
The camera will also feature an articulating touchscreen, and maybe larger than some people are anticipating.
More to come I’m sure. An announcement is expected on July 23, 2012.
Seems [NL] is hearing similar things.
From the Czech Republic
Invites for the July 23, 2012 product announcement date seem to be making their way around to folks.
It’s suspected this is when we will see the announcement of Canon’s first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. We may finally get the official announcement for the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x lens as well.
A bit of information
With Canon’s expected foray into the mirrorless segment just around the corner, a bit more information has started to flow.
We’re told the new camera is in fact a new mount, I think most expected this. The camera will launch with at least 2 lenses and an EF adaptor. One lens will be a wide angle “kit” lens as well as a telephoto lens.
No word on whether or not the EF adaptor would also adapt EF-S lenses, though I would hope it did.
It is also suggested that the new primes that Canon has announced and released (24, 28, & 40mm) are the first in a series of small prime lenses meant to work well with EOS EF and the mirrorless camera.
Information about the body itself is pretty vague. It’s still suggested the camera will use the 14mp CMOS G1 X sensor. A “good” ISO range and “average” video performance. A video focused camera could be “in the future”.
EF Lens Adaptor
We have posted a couple of patents in the past about such an adaptor. You can view them here and here.
Northlight has posted a cool little diagram showing the size of the EF adaptor in comparison to the new EF 40 f/2.8 pancake.
We received the first mention of the next Canon product announcement date. I’m told the date is pretty solid, but as always, Canon can move things around at the last minute.
It’s expected we’ll see a new mirrorless system announced as well as a few lenses. We probably won’t see new full sized EOS cameras or PowerShots announced until August or September.
Just a little bit of information out there
There isn’t a lot of technical information floating around about Canon’s mirrorless entry.
We’re getting more and more information that the announcement will be coming sometime in the next 30 days, but no solid date has been nailed down. Original estimates pegged an announcement in June, however Canon announcements move around pretty frequently.
Some technical stuff
We’ve heard only little bits of info about the mirrorless camera. The most notable is mentions that it will use the same sized sensor as the G1 X, and maybe even the exact same sensor. There has been no mention of the mount for the camera, that’s probably the biggest question surrounding it.
We’ve been told it will be launched with 3 lenses, which tells me we’re looking at a new mount. I don’t doubt there will be some way to make the camera compatible with at least EF lenses, and maybe EF-S as well.
It’s also been mentioned on more than one occassion, that this initial mirrorless announcement will be the “consumer” level camera and there are plans for “prosumer” and “professional” models.
I do expect more to come out in the coming weeks.
More to come
Received some information that Canon is far from done as far as camera launches go for 2012. I am being told that 4 more DSLRs are coming in 2012.
It’s unknown if the expected mirrorless entry counts against the mentioned 4 camera bodies.
Speculation about what the 4 cameras could possibly be are below.
1) “Entry Level” full frame camera. Think of it as a direct replacement for the 5D Mark II.
2) Prosumer APS-C, possibly the 70D and not a direct replacement of the 7D.
3) The big megapixel entry, mentioned to be an EOS-1D style body.
4) A mirrorless entry.
If the mirrorless doesn’t count against the 4 purported camera bodies, I’m unsure what else Canon could have up their sleeves for the EOS line. A few people have suggested a 5D in the cinema EOS lineup, however I don’t think that’s likely until after the EOS-1D C starts shipping in late 2012.
