This and that
A few people have written in to confirm that Canon is exploring the possibilities of entering into the medium format segment.
We’re told nothing is imminent, but things could change quickly in the next few months. How long this has been going on is unknown, but it does sound like it’s a real possibility.
No one has confirmed or denied that Phase One is the medium format company in question.
Over at NL, they received an outright dismissal to the concept. However, a second source said Canon is going to be all in, and will announce in a big way some time in 2014.
New revenue streams?
We’ve heard in the past that Canon has expressed interest in acquiring a medium format company. We heard at one point a few years ago Canon had Hasselblad’s books open and were interested in purchasing the legendary Swedish brand. If they had, I doubt this thing would exist….
Another round of rumors has come up about Canon looking into the medium format segment. According to a source at [NL] Canon is already investing heavily in a European medium format manufacturer. It’s suggested that with the decline in the compact camera market, there could be something worthwhile in the higher end, and higher margin space of medium format.
Who could it be? Perhaps Phase One?
