Canon Announces Photokina Details

Canon Announces Photokina Details

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 28th August 2014 – Canon today announces details of its presence at photokina 2014, unveiling its most interactive environment ever at the world’s largest photography and imaging show. Designed around helping photographers immerse themselves in the latest technologies, Canon’s programme at the show will offer visitors a digital imaging experience that highlights its industry leading range of products and services.

Canon’s stand at photokina 2014 will be dedicated to the journey of capturing a moment or memory. Within an open, free-roam environment, visitors will be invited to undertake shooting challenges, with experts on-hand to guide them along the way. The experiential event will go far beyond simple touch and try demonstrations, and instead provide the opportunity to truly experience the Canon range.

The stand will also feature live presentation sessions with Canon’s world famous photography ambassadors. Presenters will include landscape and travel photographer David Noton, photojournalist and documentary filmmaker Ulla Lohmann, and action shooter Richard Walch, with each providing first-hand accounts of how Canon products help them to realise their individual visions. Furthermore, Canon Explorer Jörg Kyas will be taking on interactive challenges set by visitors – providing a unique way for enthusiasts to learn about new styles or techniques.

In addition, Canon’s custom-designed platform for managing and sharing a world of images, irista, will be demonstrated, highlighting Canon’s dedication to furthering the capabilities of digital services. Visitors will also be able to browse Canon equipment and piece together their own ‘virtual kitbag’ using touchscreen tables placed around the stand.

“photokina 2014 for us is about immersing customers in a world of exciting imaging possibilities,” said Alessandro Stanzani, Head of Consumer Imaging, Canon Europe. “We’re creating an experiential environment that will challenge visitors to think much more deeply about their photography. Our photokina presence will demonstrate the very best in product and service innovation as we encourage photography explorers to truly engage with the Canon brand.”

To allow attendees the opportunity to retain their experience, Canon Live Pass RFID cards will be supplied to allow visitors to scan in at key points around the stand in order to create a souvenir site which is tailored to their interest areas, and to which they can refer after the show. Those not attending can keep up to speed via the official Canon Europe YouTube channel, where videos will provide a summary of each day’s events. Alternatively, the action can be followed live on Facebook or on Twitter / #CanonPhotokina. A virtual tour of the Canon experience and other Canon photokina content will be available on the dedicated photokina website.

What Else is Coming for Photokina? [CR2]

What Else is Coming for Photokina? [CR2]

We’re told a lot of the imaging line will see new products.

We’ve confirmed that Canon will announce new projectors at various price points for Photokina. You can also expect new printers in the Pixma line, at least one of the printers will be “Pro”. No word on the much desired 17″ Pixma Pro printer. We’ve heard it was in development, but we’re not sure when it’s coming to market.

We can also expect a couple of PowerShot announcements. A new durable camera is likely. We’re still waiting on the SX60 to make an appearance, and this seems like a good time do it.

Lots more to come…

A Rundown of EOS 7D Mark II Information

A Rundown of EOS 7D Mark II Information

There’s not a lot being said about the upcoming DSLR from Canon. We’re getting little bits of information, and what we’re getting is going to be true. However, Canon Japan has been very proactive in stopping leaks within the various subsidiaries of Canon Inc. We, and others have been told that some past reviewers and journalists have been left out of the loop this go around. Canon seems to be taking leaks a lot more seriously than Sony and Nikon, who in my opinion, leak stuff themselves.

This is a small rundown of what we know and can publish about the EOS 7D Mark II (If that’s what it’s called).

  • Full metal body (EOS-1 build quality)
  • EOS-1 style top plate
  • New sensor technology (multi layer)
  • No Wifi built-in
  • Not touch screen, super durable LCD cover
  • 12fps shooting (or faster)
  • Dual Pixel AF
  • New AF system

This will probably turn out to be Canon’s best specced camera ever. We’re also told, that just like the EOS 5D Mark III launch. This camera should be available pretty soon after the announcement.

Another major US retailer confirmed to us that the EOS 7D is discontinued. They have been told to remove their display models of the camera and that no more would be available to order. This follows Amazon listing the camera as discontinued.

If you have any more information about the camera, or any of Canon’s other coming products. You can mail us anonymously here.

New Speedlite Coming? [CR2]

New Speedlite Coming? [CR2]

A brief mention that we could see a new Speedlite announced with the EOS 7D replacement in September.

I do not expect an 600EX-RT replacement, but the 430EX II could be the one to get an upgrade.

Off Brand: Sony Readying Branded Medium Format System?

Off Brand: Sony Readying Branded Medium Format System?

There has been a lot of rumors about Canon making a move into the medium format segment, it’s even been suggested we’ll get a development announcement for such a camera at Photokina in September of this year. Canon has recently moved into security cameras and industrial cameras to find growth in new markets, it would make sense to give an EOS branded medium format system a go.

Sony, a big manufacturer of medium format sensors for the likes of Hasselblad are rumored to be readying a medium format system of their own. It would use the 50mp sensor currently found in the upcoming Hasselblad H5D-50C.

Sensor information:
Sensor Type:  50 Megapixels CMOS (8272 x 6200, 5.3 × 5.3 μm)
Sensor Dimensions:  32.9 x 43.8mm (sensor is physically 70% larger than a Full Frame sensor)
Image Size:  RAW 3FR capture 65MB on average. TIFF 8 bit: 154MB (on the Hasselblad H5D-50c).

It’s noted that Sony has no interest in competing with Hasselblad or Phase One and that their medium format camera would be something “completely different”. Perhaps a compact MF system?

Sony is being quite aggressive in trying to find new markets in still cameras, and if the system is priced affordably for medium format, they could have a winner if this true.

Canon EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x Coming By End of 2012?

Canon EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x Coming By End of 2012?

It may finally be on its way
Canon EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x is consistently a lens I get asked about. Canon announced the development of the lens about 18 months ago and hasn’t spoken much about it since.

Mike Owen, a communications manager for Canon said they expect to have the lens available before the end of 2012. Although he wouldn’t commit to the date.

Some loose specifications about the lens?

It’s expected the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x will weigh slightly more than the new EF 400 f/2.8L II, which weighs in at 3.6KG. Minimum focusing distance of the big lens is 2 meters and has focus limiters 2m-6m and 5m to infinity. The lens also comes with a PF, or power focus mode for smooth focusing during video shooting. Another neat fact is the 1.4 built in extender actually comes from Canon’s broadcast lens business.

The retail cost of this lens? The last we heard, it’ll come in around $10,000 USD.
