Review: Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L

Review: Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L

By Canon Rumors | May 13, 2015 | Canon Reviews

Sometimes it’s nice to get a new perspective on an older lens. The EF 50mm f/1.2L might be one of the most polarizing lenses in the Canon lineup, some can’t live without it, while others wish it never existed. The contrasting opinions of the lens are usually because of the focus shift that some photographers experience with it. Certain shooting styles make the issue more prevalent for some.

Friend of the site Dustin Abbott has completed his thorough review of one of my favourite lenses in the Canon lineup. I love the EF 50mm f/1.2L as well as the EF 50mm f/1.0L. I think I just have a fetish for fast 50’s!

Dustin has this to say about the 50L when compared to the competition:

The biggest threat to the Canon 50L has been the release of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens. TheZeiss Otus 55 f/1.4 (review coming next week) remains the class leader since its introduction, but its dizzying price (nearly $4000) and lack of AF means that it will stay off most photographer’s radar. The Sigma, however, has image quality that charts much better than the 50L’s along with autofocus, although it can struggle with focus accuracy and consistency. It also retails for about a third less than the 50L (which retails for $1450 when not on sale). You can read my review of the Sigma here. Is it the better lens? It is certainly sharper and has better contrast, but I’m not convinced that it has as “magical” a drawing/look as the 50L.

I agree with most of what Dustin says in his review and I’d recommend the EF 50mm f/1.2L to anyone.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II Firmware 1.04 Available

By Canon Rumors | May 12, 2015 | Canon Firmware

Firmware Version 1.0.4 incorporates the following fixes:

  1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera’s AF function may not operate properly at a focal length of approximately 100mm when used with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens.
  2. Fixes a phenomenon in which, in rare instances, the reduction of the flicker effect cannot be achieved when in AI servo AF mode, despite the “Anti-flicker shoot” function being set to “Enable”.
  3. Fixes a phenomenon in which the Picture Style settings may not be applied to the captured image when the camera is set to custom shooting mode C1, C2 or C3.
  4. Fixes a phenomenon in which, in very rare cases, the first still image captured in live view mode may not record the correct date and time.
  5. Fixes a phenomenon in which, in very rare cases, image noise may appear in JPEG images when brightness or contrast is corrected by the Auto Lighting Optimizer function.

Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS Update Information [CR2]

Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS Update Information [CR2]

By Canon Rumors | May 12, 2015 | Canon Lens Rumors

We were initially told about an update to the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS at the same time as the recently announced EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. At that time we assumed they’d be coming out together, but that turned out not to be true.

We’re told that the new EF 70-300 IS will have a new USM motor as well as “some feature that one of Canon’s competitors have announced recently”. What that “feature” is, we’re not sure. The source goes on to say that the lens, whenever it comes to market, is a very good upgrade to the current version.

The same source also confirms that the EF 35mm f/1.4L II will come in 2015 if all goes to plan.

More to come.
