Patent: EF-S 15-300mm & EF 28-550mm Optical Formulas

Patent: EF-S 15-300mm & EF 28-550mm Optical Formulas

By Canon Rumors | November 18, 2017

A patent application covering two optical formulas for both a full frame and APS-C superzoom have surfaced in Japan. Full Frame: 28-550mm f/3.5-6.3 APS-C: 15-300 f/3.5-6.3 I think it’s more likely that we see a replacement for the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS than a superzoom like this for a full frame DSLR. Though these formulas could Read more…

Patent: Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/1.8-3.5

Patent: Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/1.8-3.5

By Canon Rumors | November 18, 2017 | Canon Patents

A patent showing a faster version of the EF-M 15-45mm has appeared in the form of three separate optical formulas.

  • EF-M 15-45mm f/1.8-3.5
  • EF-M 15-45mm f/2.0-4.0
  • EF-M 15-45mm f/2.8-5.0

Canon News Summarizes:

It also looks like it may be the first canon lens patent application that I’ve seen that specifically mentions that distortion abberation control happens in camera versus being controlled by the lens.

This would tend to make more of a compact camera approach as the powershots do this already, however Canon M’s do not.

As with all patent applications that we show, this is a patent application.  This illustrates to us what Canon is looking at in their research labs.  It may or may not become a patent, and may or may not even after that be used in a camera system.

Patent: Canon Application for a Hybrid Viewfinder

Patent: Canon Application for a Hybrid Viewfinder

By Canon Rumors | November 18, 2017 | Canon Patents

It appears that Canon is continuing R&D into some kind of hybrid viewfinder for DSLRs. Canon News has uncovered a recent Japanese patent application from Canon for a hybrid viewfinder.

Patent Summary:

This one is a clever application where the EVF moves up with the mirror, to show the EVF image through the viewfinder.

This one has some real potential for implementation; as the entire optical path for the viewfinder remains the same for EVF and OVF operation, eliminating what would be a far more complex bulk on top of the camera as the last hybrid viewfinder patent demonstrated.

New Flash Coming in Early 2018, Aimed at Mirrorless Shooters [CR2]

New Flash Coming in Early 2018, Aimed at Mirrorless Shooters [CR2]

By Canon Rumors | November 15, 2017 | Canon Accessories

We’re told that the new flash that recently showed up for certification will be geared towards smaller cameras and mirrorless shooters, but give prosumer level features.

The flash was supposed to be announced in the summer of 2017, but has been delayed for unknown reasons. We would expect it is going to be announced alongside the Canon EOS M50 in January or February of 2018.

The Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT is quite small, but it may not be small enough for some EOS M shooters.

The Canon EOS Kiss M / EOS M50 Shows Up for Certification

By Canon Rumors | November 13, 2017 | Canon DSLR Rumors

Nokishita has uncovered a new Canon camera that has appeared for bluetooth certification. It looks like it will be called the EOS Kiss M / EOS M50 depending on the market.

The naming scheme is interesting, as “Kiss” is usually held for DSLRs in Japan. Could this be the first EOS M camera with an EF mount?

We think this camera will be coming for CES In January at the earliest.
