We just may see it in 2009
According to a report [NL] there is a hold up with the new 1D and its movie capabilities.
quote
“…Canon has a replacement for the 1D MKIII ready to launch during the second quarter of 2009. What’s holding Canon back is a decision from FIFA … to allow pro-cameras with video capability ( see 5D MKII) during sporting events. FIFA is currently looking into the legal implications with television rights and contracts with broadcasters. If FIFA give the green light then Canon will release the camera.”
I’ve waited to comment on it until I heard some first hand info. “It’s not a huge deal and won’t delay the launch of the camera.”
Announcement
What I also heard was a possible announcement date of May 19, 2009.
I have no spec outlines yet, but they’ll be coming.

Guess I still don’t see the big deal. You let them into the sporting event, but you have their accreditation require them not to shoot any video. If they break it, they don’t get accredited again. How many are going to break the rules when their livelihood depends on them not doing so?
now this is good rumor stuff!
@jouster:
You don’t know the FIFA. They’re control-freaks, to say the least. ;-)
I remember the national press picking up on some rather weird “requests” from the FIFA in preparation of the world cup 2006…
I hope it doesn’t delay. Canon need this camera. They need it to be awesome. They need it to be priced aggressively. they need it out quickly.
I dont think canon should rush to get this one out, they should concentrate on QC, IMHO. Just make sure the AF works this time. Better delay a few months and have superb AF.
As long as its Full Frame i’ll be happy.
I fully agree that Canon Really Needs this camera. I also fully agree with “allanz”, if Canon pushes this thing out the door and it has another issue like the 1D Mark III, it will be really bad for Canon.
Canon needs it but they need the quality Very, Very High. No hidden issues as was the case on the 1D Mark III.
We look forward to it, hope it happens, but we have to keep all the attorneys and accountants happy don’t we?
May 2009!!! Oh dear. I want this camera for a big trip that I have planned leaving in June 09…I was really hoping that he the 1d mk3 replacement would be out or at least announced to be bought in June /July!!!
If not I have a hard decision to make….get a mk3 or wait and see what happens….
Here’s praying to the Canon Camera Gods for Feb / Apri announcement and May / June street date :-)
FIFA may be missing the boat here. The easiest thing to do is blacklist any freelancers who shoot unauthorized video. It shouldn’t be too hard to do. You threaten the website with the footage to reveal their source or go after them legally (you could do both).
Day 1, 3:00 PM: guy shoots unauthed video.
Day 1, 5:00 PM: guy publishes video
Day 2, 8:00 AM: guy’s career is over for being blacklisted by FIFA.
It won’t take long when the guy can’t get a press credential for any big soccer match to keep people from doing that.
Also better yet, a staff photog (if any are left) would be doubly screwed, because you can ban the entire publication.
Let me get this straight, Canon is waiting to release a new camera model based on a decision from a sporting body?
There are lots of Cameras with built-in video. The barn door is already open. Will they Ban 5D Mark 2’s, D90’s, not to mention tons of point and shoots?
Perhaps there is some behind the scenes influence from competition that does not have a video feature??
5D MK II maybe, D90 nope, video on D90 is useless unlike 5D MK II.
Why only FIFA? How about the other sporting bodies that licenses broadcast? F1, Olympics…etc?
Also, why can’t canon simply disable the video function via firmware… just like what they did in 300D?
So what if FIFA says no go… they have to put the cam through the design and testing phase just to remove the function? That will take months to complete the cycle.
since the said cam is already ready… means all hardware design and testing have been completed…
What? Did Nokia or Motorola or whoever was the first to put a camera in a phone ask permission from a sporting or sanctioning body? Those phones shoot video now (not that high grade…but)It seems canon should release the camera and then (like everything else in the world) deal with it then.
Must be a joke…..rumor only…
Any word on the spec yet??
I would say 21.1 mp with crop mode 1.3x =16.2mp. Or an 19.1mp with a crop mode 1.3x= 14.7mp. It will be better for the lower 16-19mp range and boost the low noise/high ISO’s than having 21.1mp ad same noise as the 5D MK 2. They need to improve over the D3 by at least 2 stops in noise to keep on top.
Brian Nelson’s above analogy to Cell phones is a bit off base. A 500 camera phone (when they were first created) is not the same as a $8000 Camera. A camera phone has a much larger target market outside of the pro shooters. It’s like designing a scalpel that can’t be used for surgery… yes there are others that would buy it, but it’s not going to be successful if you can’t use it for it’s #1 purpose.
The people who are the ‘gotta have it gear heads’ with a big budget are the sports shooters. They need all the tech they can get – this camera is aimed squarely at the full pro shooters and to say anything else is naive.
Why not just boycott Fifa? The photographers are doing them a favor by photographing their event. If it weren’t for the photographers and videographers, nobody would ever know the stupid event had happened. Fifa should be the one making compromises to ensure that the publicity is still being offered to them.
it might be a complicated topic.
Sports and sport’s broadcasting is a multimillionaire business.
And that can affect the manufacturer’s decisions, I guess, since they are the providers for the photographers who cover sports all over the world. And the manufacturer wouldn’t like to have troubbles when their cameras are intended to be used for the photographers. That could decrease the demand and sales.
Someone already suggested some system based on a key card or activation card that would disable the movie mode in any way, but I don’t think it would be nice.
I guess the easiest way to avoid problems is to specify clearly that any photographer who record video in the field, will be banned/blacklisted.
As someone said, I don’t guess any Pro would put at risk his career, don’t you think?
FIFA can obligate the photographers/newspapers to firm a contract too, specifying that if they record video they will suffer a lawsuit (demand, etc) and will have to pay, etc.
I guess this “issue” can be easy resolved with contracts.
Delaying or not delivering a camera because of its features and economical interest of Sports organizations is crazy, but a prove of the “world” that is behind the “world” of the sports today…
All is business, the larger and richer, the more **** behind
@Daniel:
Crop 1.3 from 21 is 12.42 MP…
Canon is going to die…..D700/D3 are Canon killers…it’s over….
My journey with DSLRs began back in 2003 with the original Digital Rebel. DSLRs changed my photography for the better like nothing else. Five years and some 25,000 shots later, it’s still going strong. Along the way I upgraded to the Canon 30D, which is a fantastic camera as well. When the 40D was announced, I decided to wait until the 50D sometime in 2009, but wanted a newer backup/second body for my photography needs. So when the XSi/450D was announced, it sounded like a perfect fit for my needs.
