Not everything is negative
The xxD line of cameras was expected to be on a 1 year product cycle after the launch of the 50D a year after the 40D.
One more person piped up this evening and said everything isn't doom and gloom. Still expect a 50D successor sometime in the fall. The 40D will be done away with and the 50D will remain a current model. There was no information as to whether or not it would be a APS-C camera or not.

I agree with this and feel like Canon are in trouble. Their product line has them boxed in in ways that are not conducive to competing with Nikon’s bodies. The one camera they have that offers something truly compelling right now is the 5DMkII b/c it’s an oddball and doesn’t fit within the canon line, at least within a cost to features to benefit analysis. Super high pixel count, low noise, full frame, at a reasonable cost. Nikon’s line makes much more sense. What has to happen, imo, is that Canon has to update their 1D series and their xxD series simultaneously. Canon needs to take their xxD series in a very dramatic direction and haven’t in some time.
60D
Canon should market a 60D at two types, pro-sumers who want a great camera with the latest and greatest, and outdoor shooters. Outdoor shooters need reach, they appreciate a smaller form factor, and appreciate the weathersealing that comes with a 1 series body. A larger viewfinder would of course be welcome and a more advanced autofocus to boot for tracking BIF. For the prosumer generalist, the 60D should be a 16 megapixel machine (check on the megapixel increase for the latest and greatest crowd), could include video (check 2 for the latest and greatest crowd), and possibly an articulating lcd (check three). Keep low light levels the same, faster processing with digic V and at least 6 fps and Canon has a winner. I’d say $1699 and we have ourselves a deal.
1DIV
Canon just needs to do all the things that they know they need to do with this one for sports and action shooters. Super accurate and fast more advanced autofocus. Keep the 1.3 crop for reach. Probably 12-14 megapixels tops. Fully weather sealed. 100% viewfinder. Video? Why not put a 3.5 inch screen on there (there’s room). 15-20 fps speed demon. Advanced battery system–chants for fuel cell.
$3999
1DSIV = sky is the limit. Medium format territory. All of the above but 29-35MP and only 6 fps. Low light matches 1DSIII.
$6999
Yes definitely a market (if not overly vocal) for better ones. Enhanced L zooms?
My 30D is due for an upgrade. But there is a problem, 5D II is a little pricey for my budget. I would accept 12MP FF with sensor cleaning and better AF (like D700 or a little less). 40D is great, but just too little, while 50D only brings in AF microadjustment (af still poor) for much more.
Listen canon!
I too would rather see more glass than an expansion of bodies. My 40D does what I need + more. I’ll probably pick up a 5D Mk II around Christmas, but still, Canon needs some updated L zooms and affordable prime zooms with IS (e.g. EF 400 5.6IS, EF 500 5.6IS, EF 200-500 4-5.6IS (or even 4.5-6.3IS)) I’d be please with just ONE of those, but if Canon wants to make a lot of people happy & update the EF 100-400IS and one of the zooms, that too would work!
for prime lenses only.
