Looks Good
I just shot a video with the 5D Mark II & 35L at f/4. Woooo!

All the Fixes & Features

CR's 5D Mark II Updated
CR's 5D Mark II Updated

1. Includes a function to enable the manual exposure setting when shooting movies.
When shooting movies in manual (M) mode, the shutter speed *1, the lens aperture value *2, and the ISO speed *3 can be freely set to allow a greater flexibility.

Notes:
1 Shutter speed range: 1/30 sec. to 1/4000 sec.
2 Lens aperture range: Maximum to minimum aperture value of the lens used
3 ISO speed range:
Auto: ISO 100 to 6400 set automatically
Manual: ISO 100 to 6400, H1

2. Disables the function of the depth-of-field preview button when images are played back or when the menu screen is displayed on the LCD panel.
*There are indications that images being reviewed or the menu screen may suddenly disappear from the LCD panel. As this phenomenon may be caused by accidentally pressing the depth-of-field preview button, this firmware update disables the function of the depth of field preview to address this issue.

3. Fixes a phenomenon where the peripheral illumination of images cannot be properly corrected, even if the images were captured with the lens peripheral illumination correction function set to Enable.
Firmware Version 1.1.0 fixes a phenomenon where peripheral illumination may not be properly corrected due the type of lens used and shooting conditions.

4. Fixes the algorithms of the Auto Lighting Optimizer function when Custom Function C.Fn II-3 Highlight tone priority is enabled.

5. Fixes incorrect indications on the Arabic, Romanian, Spanish, and Ukrainian menu screens.

6. Changes the battery information displayed on the camera when using the optional Battery Grip BG-E6.
*If only one LP-E6 battery pack is installed in the Battery Grip BG-E6, the battery information for the empty battery slot shows the error message, Cannot communicate with battery. However, with this firmware update, this error message no longer appears, even if only one LP-E6 battery pack is installed.

  • Can anyone verify that RAW images still process correctly in ACR and Lightroom?

I don’t want to apply the update and not be able to post-process for awhile…

    Thank You!!

  • Still prefer to manually adjust aperture… Changing it causes an abrupt brightening/darkening. Hardware limitation. Can’t be in exposure SIM, so how will I see what I’m shooting so that I can setup first? Do I have to take a video and then delete it each time?

  • Hi Guys, question for you:

Is the extension of Auto-ISO to 6400 only applicable for videos (and shots during the video) or also for photos only?

  • Even at 4000 ISO the video stay clean in dark areas, this is amazing, just tested with 85mm f/1.2 1/50 sec @ 2500°K and 4000 ISO in the middle of a very dark night.

In PAL Countries, if we want to film city lights or indoor lights, we need to set the shutter at 1/50, 1/100, etc. (anything multiple of 50 Hz) if we do not want to see flicker, so now we are waiting for 25p, and 24p.

And thanks Canon to have fixed the information bug with only one battery in the Battery Grip BG-E6, that was quite annoying.

  • only for video, and ironically now it has a working autoiso (in M mode) only for movie mode, but not for stills!

  • Yeah, wow this is awesome.

    So much nicer than before.

No more aperture switch during filming glitches, freedom to lock in whatever you need for the look you are after. You get to know exactly what is going on. A joy to use now!

  • Cool!
    1 question though.
I skipped installing version 1.0.7 and it says I need that.
Can’t find it on the the canonsite anymore. Don’t want my camera to die. Anyone knows if I really need it, or if it’s possible to directly update from 1.0.6?

  • Just updated from 1.0.6 to 1.1.0 .. WORKED FLAWLESSLY!!! f/2.2 to 5.6 is stunning on the 85 1.2 :)

  • You can apply the new firmware, and if you don’t like it you should be able to go back to 1.0.7 (if you have saved on your computer)

I always keep backup from “old” files… you never know when you will need them..

If you can’t find version 1.0.7 at Canon, ask it to some friend.

  • Just updated. Apart of this new auto-ISO only available for video mode, what I don’t get is that once you switched the liveview mode to Video Display you won’t be able to shoot in Av and Tv in liveview. In both mode the camera will behave like in P mode. Getting back to Exposure Simulation correct the problem.

Now, I’ve been using Exp. Sim. since I got the camera so I don’t know if this is related to firmware 1.1.0 or not.

  • (Oh let me correct my « correct. » The correct « correct » is « corrects. »)

  • This may sound ridiculous, but probably the most important update for me is #2 – the depth of field preview button during playback mode. It was really annoying!

  • I completely agree. I love the new design of the mk II but the the way my finger is resting on the dof button was annoying when playing back photos. Very glad they found a solution for this

  • Great effort Canon! Very glad that U listened… i may remain one of your customers after all!!!
Auto ISO is pretty cool TOO: AV priority in Video Mode basically…

  • canon please give us the 25p!!!
now that everything is manual it s even more frustrating!!!!
at least tell us if you will or not add it…

    Frederic

  • Why would your shutter speed make a difference here? The 25p everyone is worried about is frames per second, your shutter speed has no bearing on this. The 1/50th of a second is how long your sensor exposes the frame. 1/4000 is not 4000p. Unlike a video camera, which uses a cylindrical shutter that expose the sensor for x amount of time x times per second, your physical shutter on the 5Dmkii is not actually doing anything besides staying open while you shoot video. The camera is just capturing the stream as its fed to the live view. I dont even know that its actually turning the sensor on and off or if the “shutter speed” is actually interpreted by how much current is being sent to the cmos, kind of the way ISO works on a digital camera. They may be figuring it at a certain amount of preamped gain vs the ISO or it may be software, regardless it has nothing to do with your actual shutter for which you and your camera should be thankful. I believe the 5dMKii is rated at 150,000 shutter cycles. At 30p an hour of video would use more than 2/3 of your shutter’s life.

  • if the slower the shutter speed the more smoother the movements, and if faster the shutter the more the “streaky” the movements, why use a faster shutter at all?

  • because of limitations of ISO/aperture, and the need of limited depth of field. Same reasons as photos. except in stills its an advantage because there isn’t motion blur, in video motion looks unrealistic.

  • Uh, I did. The new feature is a bit of a pain vs rotating an apeture ring more *gradually*…

I prefer to have exposure SIM mode on, and I can’t if I use this feature.

  • Good god, Canon doesn’t make lenses with a aperature ring! Go buy a Nikon or something.

  • heh, they’ll have a new body out before they’ll get around to fixing the 500D

  • think opening sequence ‘Saving Private Ryan’
yep ..video… its a brave new world

  • Please Canon, give us 25p.

That would save soooo much post-processing.

    Thanks!!

  • @ VIM

A video camera does not use a cylindrical shutter, that’s for film cameras, a video camera, like the 5D Mark II uses an electronic shutter.

In PAL Countries our alternative electric current is based on 50 Hz, that’s why all our video cameras capture movies with 25p or 50i, without what, the lights begin sparkling.

With 30p, the only way of avoiding this problem, is to set the shutter speed to match the 50 Hz, that’s why we can only use speeds like 1/50, 1/100, etc.

If Canon gives us 25p, we will be able to use any shutter speed that’s the 5D Mark II is capable of, because 25p already match 50 Hz (50/2=25).

If you take one of our 25p or 50i PAL cameras and use it in countries with an electrical power of 60 Hz, you will see the lights sparkling, the same way, if we take an NTSC 30p or 60i cameras and use it under 50 Hz lights, there will be flicker unless we choose a specific shutter speed.

That’s one of the reason we need 25p with the 5D Mark II, the other reason is that our TV, DVD, and Blu-ray uses 25p and 50i, so if we want to export our films on those formats without re-rendering them, we need native 25p.

  • VIM, ff you are not convinced, I can show you an example with my 5D Mark II, I can film indoor a room with lights, or outdoor at night the city lights, first with a shutter speed of 1/30 or a “180° shutter” with 1/60, and you will only see a big giant stroboscope, that’s freaking, and in a second time I can film the same place but with a shutter speed of 1/50 or 1/100, and the stroboscopic effect disappear.

  • I agree that setting exposure manually when fixing the ISO is a pain, you need to use a light meter when in full manual, but thats what people asked for … full manual.

If you use auto ISO, then the exposure is adjusted for you.

The aperture adjusts just like it always has, and its much easier than fiddling with the aperture ring on a Nikkor lens.

Just set the camera to Manual, push the “ON” switch all the way up past “ON” and the top wheel continuously adjusts aperture and the back wheel adjusts shutter. You can smoothly adjust aperture without putting the camera down.

I have a couple of Nikkor lenses that I used for video, and its not fun having to adjust the aperture setting.

  • Lots of professional European 5D ML II users have no problem, they know how to use the equipment. It sounds like a learning curve.

  • let s keep on pushing them by mail phone or else!!!if we put all our voices together maybe they will listen…
it s jus not fair we paid the same money and don t have the same possibilities!!
    25p please!!!!

  • I have seen this firmware includes a fix for Auto Lighting Optimizer function, I have the following issue with the old firmware and I like to validate if other people have similar issues. In strong light conditions with a low aperture number (f5.6) I have the following issue using the 5D Mark II with a 500mm F4.0 prime (with or without the 1.4TC – both give the same result).

    Example picture : http://www.marcelvanbalkom.nl/test/IMG_8717.jpg

The problems is I get circular lines visible on screen, computer (RAW) and even in prints. This only happens in strong light (blue sky) conditions, High aperture numbers like 32 or higher resolve the lines. Around aperture 18 the lines become less visible. To a better more clear diagnose of the issue, I have tried other and similar lenses but the result is the same using the 5D mark II. When I replace the body with for example a 1D Mark III or 40D the problem resolves as well, so it must de the 5D Mark II. All tests where done under the same conditions at the same time at the same location.

I have send a mail to the canon repair centre in the Netherlands but apparently they are bankrupt and cannon help me further …. The reply from canon was a listing of possible root causes like radiation (for which the 5d Mark II seems to be sensitive).

I was wondering if somebody experience the same issues?

  • Know how to use the equipment is one thing, be able to use all the options of the equipment at all time is another.

For example, if I want to have a particular cinematographic motion blur, a “180° Shutter Speed”, for 30p I will choose 1/60 sec for the entire production, but every time I will have to shoot at night or under lights it won’t work.

  • 24/45 FPS AND SOUND 24/45 FPS AND SOUND 24/45 FPS AND SOUND

This is still my comment to Canon and seriously we should do something more towards the Canon and last but not least the Canon society: they should not be so pleased with this upgrade at all!!

There isn’t any information stream of Canon about when or if sound and 24/25 fps is coming.

I still think this is arogant.

I still think THE CANON COMMUNITY SHOULD NOT BE HAPPY AND PROTEST AGAINST CANON!!!

I did and I think, really think it HELPS!!!

CANON RESPOND AGAIN AND YOU ARE STRONGER AS BEFORE!

  • 45 fps? why why not 25 fps, so PAL people can just play it on their TV without screwing with it in post.

record sound separately please. this is a visual tool, not an auditory one.

  • NOW CANON:

CAN WE HAVE exposure compensation TOO?

WHY ARE YOU TEASING US, STAYING ARROGANT???

AM I SO NEGATIVE OR JUST REALISTIC?

    SHOUTING LOUDLY:

SO BESIDES 24/25, SOUND, ALSO EXPOSURE COMPENSATION!!!!!!

SO BESIDES 24/25 SOUND ALSO EXPOSURE COMPENSATION!!!!!!

SO BESIDES 24/25 SOUND ALSO EXPOSURE COMPENSATION!!!!!!

WHO WANTS TO SHOUT WITH ME?

ONLY THEN WE CAN BE PLEASED WITCH SHOULD BE NORMAL.

With manual exposure mode selected and ISO set to Auto, there is one key automatic exposure feature missing, however: exposure compensation. This means you can’t, for instance, dial in -1/3 to -2/3 of exposure compensation when working in bright frontlit sun, and this is often mandatory to keep 5D Mark II video from being too light and highlights being blown out.

  • Use the Sigma 50mm f1.4 on 5Dm2 taking video using ISO 3200 in dim light !! COOL MAN !!! Full Manual Video !!! COOL AWESOME!!

  • In Malaysia, there is only one shutter 1/50 for indoor shooting, because we are running in PAL 50Hz electricity,

So nevertheless the 30P mode give us the freedom to choose this speed. Cheers Canon, but it will be better if you enable 24/25 fps Video, if not, i think it’s ok to stick on 1/50 Shutter running at 30fps…. cheers man

  • Canon updates 5D manual controls but it’s still ntsc-only camera. There’s new Nikon coming that will have 25p mode too. Wait for that one, don’t buy Canon. 30p is useless in PAL countries (= most of the world).

  • Nikon fanboi much?

you can convert from NTSC to PAL in post, I’m not saying that Canon shouldn’t have it, but its not the catastrophy you’re making it out to be

  • Yes you can do it in post, but the quality after that is something you are not going to use in professional production.

  • and how about that you can only use shutter speed of 1/50 if you shoot anywhere else than under natural light (sun)? Would you be fine if there were only 1/60 shutter speed in the camera?

  • forgive me but I don’t see how that is a problem with Canon and their products, it is a problem that video cameras have with flickering light sources.

  • Awesome! Works great! Well done Canon… I Love work with my 5D Mark II!!! Updated : everything is ok, thanks Canon and Canon Rumors !

  • Ok, someone help me out here. I still have version 1.0.7 on my Mark ii. Can I go straight ahead and up load 1.2.4 to my camera or do I have to have 1.1.0 first?????? The language the offical website uses isn’t very clear to me. Like, does 1.2.4 contain the same updates as 1.1.0?? Or will I be missing 1.1.0’s updates if I jump to 1.2.4?

    Thanks,

    Steve
