5D Mark III in 2011
Vincent Laforet on a recent webcast alluded to the next incarnation of the 5D coming “next year”.

He also mentioned Canon is committed to improving the mini HDMI connector on the cameras.

It's rare to hear any of the sponsored photographers mention future products.

New Flash
A brief comment I received said Canon is readying to replace the 580EX II with a new unit. This will not be an addition to the flash lineup. There will be some new technology built into the flash as well.

PowerShot SX20 Replacement
The SX20 replacement will take a bit of a departure from the SX10 & SX20. Expect a new lens setup, design and image sensor technololgy.

The source also says expect the SX20 to be the last superzoom from Canon that uses AA batteries. I know that will NOT be music to the ears of a lot of people. It seems to be a 50/50 split for LiIon vs AA with the camera line.

New Waterproof Camera
Expect a new waterproof camera to be announced with the 60D in the coming month. I've also been told there could be a waterproof camcorder.

  1. At some point it does not make any difference anymore what ISO you announce, if all you do is amplify the noise.

For my personal taste, 3200 ISO on the 5D2 is barely usable, so going 4 stops further….

There is an interesting article on DXO that compares progress in sensor technology. It turns out that over the last few years, sensors have gained only 1 or 2 stops in noise resistance, and almost all the rest (another 2 or 3 stops) is due to noise reduction algorithms=software.

  2. What about a 6D, same as 5DMK2 but no video (less expensive) and improved ergonomics:

    – depth-of-field preview button to the other side so one can reach it with the shooting hand and be able to manual focus with the lens hand at the same time.
    – play button to the other side of the LCD display, reachable with the shooting hand.
(let us keep the left hand holding the lens)
    – bigger viewfinder display – faster readings keeping the eye in the viewfinder

All we need is a camera to take pictures. For me a 6D like this will be a 5DMK2 improved.

    Best regards,
    Davide
