Canon is thinking about more lenses like the RF 600mm f/11 STM and RF 800mm f/11 STM

By Canon Rumors | November 30, 2020 | Canon Lens News

Canon’s Kengo Iezuka suggested recently in an interview with Mynavi News that Canon is considering more lenses like the RF 600mm f/11 STM and RF 800mm f/11 STM super-telephoto lenses. He notes that these types of lenses weren’t possible on DSLRs because of the autofocus technological differences between a mirrorless and a DSLR.

“This lens has a darker F11 opening value, but it can be said that it was born because of the EOS R, which can use high-speed and high-precision AF even at such an opening value.”

Mr. Iezuka was asked specifically about the possibility of an RF 400mm f/8 STM to complete a trilogy of super small super-telephoto lenses. It sounded like something he wanted to see by saying “It would be nice to have it completed”.

I think the sales numbers of the RF 600 f/11 STM and RF 800 f/11 STM will determine if Canon continues with these lenses, as they did take a bit of a gamble investing development dollars into something we haven’t really seen before.

Patent: Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM

Patent: Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM

By Canon Rumors | November 27, 2020 | Canon Patents

Yesterday I posted a patent showing the optical formulas for both an RF 15-35mm f/4L and an RF 16-35mm f/4L. I noted that an RF 14-35mm f/4L is rumored to be coming in 2021, and I did wonder aloud if that was a type, but it appears Canon is definitely working on an RF 14-35mm f/4L optical formula.

It looks like this design of an RF 14-35mm f/4L has an internal zoom and will likely have IS as well.

While this patent pertains to underwater housings for the optical formulas in the patent, the formula for this lens is quite detailed. Canon News discovered this patent that also shows some rather large RF prime lenses, which you can read about at Canon News.

Have we experienced our last Photokina? The show has been suspended until further notice

No 8 / Cologne, Germany, 27 November 2020 // photokina will be suspended until further notice

After 70 years, decreases in the imaging market force a hard cut

In view of the further massive decline in markets for imaging products, Koelnmesse has decided to discontinue organising photokina at its Cologne location for the time being. “Unfortunately, at present the framework conditions in the industry do not provide a viable basis for the leading international trade fair for photography, video and imaging,” according to Gerald Böse, President and Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse. “This hard cut after a 70-year shared history was very difficult for us. The trend in this industry, with which we have always had a close and trusting partnership, is very painful for us to witness. But we are facing the situation with a clear, honest decision against continuing this event, a decision to which, unfortunately, we have no alternative.”

Here are different ways to cool the Canon EOS R5, watercooling and more

By Canon Rumors | November 26, 2020 | Canon EOS R

DIY Perks on YouTube have posted a 20-minute video showcasing how they developed different cooling methods for the Canon EOS R5.

The first attempt was installing a DIY water cooling solution. What was interesting with this, was firmware v1.0.0 still gave the overheating warning at about the 20-minute mark, proving that part of the original EOS R5 firmware overheating safety measures was the internal timer. However, after updating to firmware v1.1.11, the water-cooled Canon EOS R5 recorded indefinitely.

Since the water cooling is hardly a usable setup, DIY Perks decided to install a custom made copper heatsink for the processor and surrounding areas. The goal here was to push the heat to the rear cover of the camera. With only a copper heatsink installed along with some thermal paste, the Canon EOS R5 was able to record 39 minutes of 8K video, which is a 43% boost over the 25 minutes of record time with firmware v1.1.1.

Interestingly, the Canon EOS R5 was ready to get back to shooting 30 minutes of 8K after a 5 minutes break repeatedly.

The last solution from DIY Perks is an external active fan solution. One fan placed directly towards the back of the camera with a copper plate, and the other solution a very interesting 3D printed solution that mounts to the bottom of the Canon EOS R5 and gives you unlimited 8K recording at 23c ambient temperature.

The latter solution here seems to be a possible solution going forward. You do have to keep in mind that these tests of solutions require the custom copper heatsink installed in the camera.

Patent: Canon RF 15-35mm f/4L

By Canon Rumors | November 26, 2020 | Canon Patents

Canon News has uncovered a patent for a lens that will surely be coming in the future from Canon. I have reported that a Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM was on the way. Perhaps the “14mm” was a type and it will in fact be 15mm at the wide end.

This patent also includes an optical formula that has a wide end of 16mm.

I suspect we’re going to see this lens or something very similar announced in 2021.

Canon News has uncovered a patent that shows Canon is working on very small RF zoom lenses, these simple designs may also be collapsable.

Japan Patent Application 2020-190661

In recent years, so-called mirrorless cameras, which do not have a quick return mirror, are increasing in cameras. Since this mirrorless camera has a thin body, is compact and lightweight, it is required to develop a compact and lightweight interchangeable lens that matches the mirrorless camera.

Since this mirrorless camera does not require the space of the quick return mirror, it is not necessary to secure the back focus as much as the conventional interchangeable lens. Therefore, the configuration of the lens is also different from that of the conventional interchangeable lens, and the degree of freedom in design is increased so that it is possible to design a compact and lightweight lens.

In particular, a wide-angle lens tends to have a short back focus, so that it can be miniaturized as an interchangeable lens for a mirrorless camera.
