All signs point to August 19
According to a Danish site, Canon will be making their next round of PowerShot & EOS announcements August 19, 2009.

http://zoom.comon.dk/nyheder/Nyheder-fra-Canon-19-august-1.237240.html

The PowerShot lineup will receive its updates. There will also be 2 SLR’s according to multiple sources. The obvious 60D/7D camera and a 2000D/T1.

Another email stated August 25, 2009 would be the day for announcements, but my money is on the 19th.

  • Look CR2!!

    Looking forward 60D/7D

Little inferior to D300 with moderately cheaper prize is welcome

  • I am expecting a D300s killer, you know with at least 19 AF points, pro weather seals, 7 FPS, 100% VF, 1.6 crop, 15MP, small body, +3-3 compensation, proper bracketing, 1080 24p, 25p, 30p, 720 60p, full manual video, etc.

No 2000D, so Canon can do both 1D4 and 1Ds4 in Sept 2009, for a total of 4 new cameras in 2009.

I’m not holding my breath. But it’s what Canon should do.

  • APS-H….. got plenty of “L’s” to use. APS-H with 10.1 MP (from 1d mk III) at 10fps. and the new 70-200 IS 2.8L (lucky me, i just sold my 70-200 4L non IS). don’t update that 24-70 now, give me a month to sell mine, lol…

  • Great, that’s only in 2 weeks, instead of 3.

But, maybe it’s the same as with Nikon and there will be announcements on both dates.

  • I’d bet all the specs are spot on except I don’t think there will be any pro sealing or other framerates besides 30p . . . maybe 24p if we’re lucky! 60p’s too intensive!

  • Yeah I just bought my 24-70L 2.8 and 70-200L 2.8IS in june not knowing of a possible update. And waiting to buy another body to repalce my 40D. As a sports shooter the 5D MKII is just to slow but good ISO. Smaller sensor for the crop factor and speed. After passing on the 50D and waiting for something GOOD!!! 7D aka D400 competitor. Tired of being out done by my friend and his D300, D700 Dou.

  • 24fps? what for? 30fps is better.
And any display that can show 24p is able to show 30fps as well.
There is absolutely no need for 24p.

  • I just hope for (APS-H) sensor and if there’s going to be video; 30fps 1080 with an external mic option. A new ergonomically improved battery grip is very welcomed too the ones on the 40d and 50d aren’t that great. I very much admire the button layout on the 5d MKII to that of the 50d

  • I don’t care much about video. But I like the rest of your suggestions regarding the D300s killer. Apart from the specs you mentioned, the most important thing for me is the SENSOR. I hope Canon demonstrate some innovation in sensor technology. I really want to see improvement in DR at low ISO and low noise at high ISO.

  • And what are you basing that on? 30P is better? No, neither is better. They are just different.

It depends on what application you intend using it for and what medium you will be distributing on as to what works best for each of us.

Being in PAL Land, 24P would be immensely more suitable for my purposes, as it is more easily converted to both 25P and 30P if required.

Blanket statements like “There is absolutely no need for 24P.” are poorly thought and show you to be misinformed. . .

  • Maybe we will see a new Ixus in the “large-sensor” series of ixus models…

Earlier cameras and release dates of these modells:
    IXUS 750 (Aug 2005)
    IXUS 900 Ti (Sep 2006)
    IXUS 960 IS (Aug 2007)
    IXUS 980 IS (Sep 2008)

  • It could if it is imporoved significantly, lets hope they release either an imporved 17-85 IS USM or the EF-S 18-105 IS USM. Would be a shame if they don’t.

  • an observation : AFAIK, their is no teaser mini-site like for the launch of 5dmkII.

    two possibilities :
    – Canon realised a teaser was creating too much expectations, and people would later be disappointed.
    – the new announcement is not that big. Maybe a 50D with video, but nothing like the “goddess of darkness”.

  • Hi,

This is part of the text from a newsletter i received today:

    “Teasing Talk……

Check out our exciting Canon promotion launching mid August; there are whispers of a new Nikon DSLR – check out our blog for new information; also rumoured – new lenses from Canon; we have exciting range expansion plans due October 1st…”

  • They are not talking the D300s or D3000, since they are already on their website, so it sounds like the D700(s or X) is coming. Regarding the Canon lenses, it sounds like they will be available on the 1st of October.

  • I really hope that Canon can add wireless-controled flash system to their body and midrange speedlight like 430EX, same same as Nikon.

  • According to one of my friends who is chief editor of a photo mag, the press event is the 25.

  • +1 … improved sensor would be the biggest win. After that I’d like to see a somewhat faster frame rate and an SD slot.

    Video? Meh.

  • go 7D, go APS-H! go somewhat-high fps (no lower than 6). go and remove the built-in flash :) go weather sealing, and newspaper-printable iso quality up to 3200. GO ISO 50!

  • A D700s makes sense. But a D700X is an instant D3X killer. Nikon will bleed even more financially if they repeat their D3 -> D700 mistake.

  • The 50D and 1000D are poor sellers in comparison to 20D/30D/40D and 300D/350D/400D/450D respectively. I hope Canon has done their homework and understand why no one wants to buy them. It’s time for them to buck up or get out…

  • My guess…
    60D:
same sensor(less noise), video, weather sealing, better AF, more fps, faster contrast AF, wireless flash control.

if not… it will be a disappointment.

    7D:
    not till spring

    2000D/T1:
    not interested

    sept./oct.
    1D4/1Ds4:
1D4 should be FF at the same pixel density as 1D3, video better than 5D2, new AF(faster and accurate), bigger display(lcd or oled), less noise, bigger buffer, hdmi out.
1Ds4 more pixels, might have video, same as above.

  • I sold my 40D last week, but kept the 17-55 lens. For now, I have to make do with my 1D MK II and my 5D MK II. If the 60D is a winner, one of those may go, otherwise I’ll wait for the 1D MK IV.

  • 2009 is a year of tweaks, not major upgrades. We might see some slight change in AA filters, but it will most likely all be a change to Digic V and firmware based changes. These will approve the IQ and add video mode, and hopefully more FPS, but not much hope for a all new sensor.

Actually, in the future, we are more likely to see features like multiple exposure stacking maybe even focus stacking for improved depth of field as well as less noise and better DR. The Digic V processor may have these built-in, but don’t count on it this year.

  • Updates to the 24-70 this year have been rumored as they have been every year. It will happen when Canon decides, not when the rumor mill wants them. Canon has been testing lens prototypes, but that does not mean they will be or are ready for production.

  • He did not say the 5D MK II was a disappointment, just that a teaser campaign would only happen for a major upgrade or new camera that would exceed expectations.

2009 is the year of tweaks, not major upgrades.

  • Ok here is my combinations:

    1- 60d and 2000d to match nikon

    2- 60d and 1d mark vi

I wish that rumors about 7d are true but I don’t think it’s going to happen

  • that and market saturation. nowadays, everybody who wants a DSLR already has at least one DSLR (and probably a compact to back it up too). to be honest, the every-year-update was bound to bite them at some point; if you have a 450D, you don’t need a T1i, if you have a 40D, you don’t need a 50D. the buyer’s update cycle is simply longer than the manufacturer’s update cycle.

  • it depends on what you’re end goal is, and options are always good to have – I suspect it will also only have 30p but that doesn’t mean having the other options would not be good.

  • the spec he listed is 720 60p (1280×720 60 progressive fps), which even the Panasonic GH1 micro43 camera has right now, so no, it is not too intensive and would be quite welcome for action/sports. At this point 1080 60p is probably too intensive on APS-C cams, but perhaps by 2nd or 3rd generation of HD DSLR’s it will not be. I would not be surprised to see a major leap in this area when the 1Ds4 comes out.

  • New FF sensor FTW! Go, 7D, go!!!

But in reality we will be getting a 50D with video with minor upgrades which is going to be disappointing. I’ll be (pleasantly) surprised if I’m wrong…

  • Well, if major upgrade means an all new body or ability that didn’t exist before, as full HD video was when the 5D2 came out, I’ll agree. At this point, short of a FF 7D, nothing that new is gonna happen. But that doesn’t mean we will not see significant upgrades to the 50D that are more than “tweaks.”

  • Wow. Finally a prediction list I completely agree with! I’d just add the 1Ds4 could go above HD to 2K and become the new film industry darling.

  • You are not the only one, but one of a few who feel the minor tele boost and ruining your wide angle ability of APS-H is desirable. The competitive market is now FF; D3, D700, A900, A850 and others that will surely appear in the near future – the bottom line is APS-H can’t effectively compete against FF, especially the ones that give you dynamic crop and you’re $2000 14mm is still 14mm and not 18.2mm and your 24mm is still 24mm not 31.2mm. The tele boast of 1.3 is a joke, a minor crop in photoshop, and something dynamic crop can easily do. So another APS-H would be the dumbest move by Canon, ever.

  • you know, when Canon tests these things, they must build a whole bunch of kluge-y test variants, stuff that we hear about in rumors but which ultimately aren’t the finalized camera. I wonder what it would take to get your hands on some bizarre franken-canon, like a APS-H 5D MKII, or a 16MP 1D-MKIII, etc…

  • CANON!!

    “RE-DESIGN” YOUR SOFTWARE IN D-SLR.

Current software is just like trash.

For example, Only 9 rows in thumbnail ? meh!

  • The D3 & D700 was and is NOT a mistake. The simple fact is I would never buy a D3 because I don’t like the big body, money is not the issue. Therefore, Nikon is actually making a camera I would buy, but Canon isn’t.

  • In its August issue, “Chasseur d’Images” magazine writes about 2000D being scheduled for Christmas period.

  • I think you would not like to keep one of those prototypes for long! Firmware are certainly very unstable and performance below your expectations.

Consider that even the pre-production models sent to the press for tests and reviews are considered subpar (noisy sensor, buggy firmware, etc).

  • So if a 60D were announced on the 19th, what is the actual release date anticipated based on historical evidence? The reason I ask is I just bought a 50D, and have a few more days to return it without any problems…I won’t have a strong need for it until late september, but i’m not sure I’ll be able to buy the 60D in time…

    any thoughts???

  • Return it while you can. You can always re-purchase the 50D if you wish after the announcement. It will only get cheaper!

  • agreed, thats why i havent even started to think about updating my 40D, and skip the 50D straigh to the 60D or *fingers crossed* a 7D

  • I’d guess about a month from announcement to release. I think that is pretty standard.

  • Which is maybe why nikon was wise to dump all they could out there and just people into the nikon fold before everybody was already under one tent or the other. At least they have them for lenses and the occasional body upgrade. Back in SLR days people didn’t change bodies too often and it will become more and more like that with digital, although not there yet.

  • If it is like with the 40D you’ll have it in time.
If it is like the 50D it might just barely miss it.
At least the xxD come out sooner than the 1 and 5’s which take a long while.

  • My second fear is that there were rumors they’d change the batteries, and I just bought 6 of those (which cannot be returned)…what is the likelihood of that happening? or at least of the 60D not being backwards compatible…

  • Sounds like a 1D3 – those should be getting cheaper soon or pick up a good used one.

  • I also have a bridge that crosses the Hudson river I am willing to part with at a fair price if anyone is interested.

  • Remember that this is all rumors, there are no guarantee that 60D will appear now, Canon often wait 18 months between xxD upgrades, which would mean February or March. Still, I think it’s a pretty good chance that it will come out now as both 500D and Nikon’s competing models have video modes and that must hurt Canon’s 50D sales.

    Btw, why 6 batteries?

  • Yes, through the D700, Nikon is making a camera consumer wants. BUT they are bleeding financially.

  • i doubt APS-H cuz they have to keep people buying the 5dm2 and if it was H then they’d be replacing that cam. 1080 30fps definitely because of the large amt of complaints about the T1i with its 20fps @1080 rolling shutter issues.

i think they must be aiming for the ground between rebel and 5dm2

  • Yes, Nikon is financially down, but it isn’t from the “camera” division, it’s from the “stepper” division. Nikon only has 2 divisions.

  • That may be, yes … but 60D (or whatever the name) will be an APS-C sensor in any case.

  • I do wedding photography, and believe in playing it EXTREMELY safe…most of them are decent generics, so not a huge investment…but with generics, I have had experience with them suddenly going bad before, so that’s why I like to make sure I have plenty of backup…

  • there is not even a used market of the 1D3 in my country :) i mean those _few_ who could afford it are pretty attached to it. but i agree it would be nice to see a fair price drop.

anyway, i’d be the most happy with a nikon D700-killer new body, but i’m not much fan of a FF sensor. and a 60D will be nothing like the D700. (a 50D with video even less.)

  • maybe, doubt 4k at this point, but 2K (2048 x 1556 at 24fps) would not surprise me, at least for recording in camera.

  • do you want a full list of what’s so bad?

For example, I have a 40D too : do you think that the custom settings menu makes any sense?

This menu is a COPY of the custom settings as seen on the top LCD of a film EOS. The row of 0s and 1s at the bottom of each page is the worst of example of interface design I have seen in my entire life!
Is that all what Canon could achieve on a 230k dot LCD??

Of course, there is no help button to display an explanation of the options.

  • Says nothing about a division, it says Nikon Corp.

“Aug. 5–TOKYO — Nikon Corp. said Wednesday it has expanded its projected loss for fiscal 2009”

And it specifically refers to “demand for imaging products bottomed out in the last quarter of fiscal 2008” so I don’t see how this is not about the camera division?

  • I’ve skipped everything and gone medium format.. at least i can keep the camera and upgrade/ downgrade the back if needed. At some point it would be great if Canon could make a digital back and kill this megapixel crap at 24mp

  • I think RED has the jump on 3 & 4K with the Scarlet coming out this fall—for prosumer anyway.

  • It’s not that uncommon. Infact, only a few years ago many of the top wedding photog’s were using APS-C exclusively. Not even two years ago every single photog not using canon was using APS-C.

  • all the more reason Canon may have a high end video body on the way, and the 1Ds4 is the perfect place to go head to head with RED and expand interest from indie and film-makers over the 5D2, and it could help justify the price over the FF low end.

  • How often are you actually using this menu? After the initial configuration of the camera, I never touch it, so I really couldn’t care less whether they change it or not.

And even if this one menu is not user-friendly, it does not make the entire firmware “trash”.

  • everyone had a loss last year

and even if D700 ate some D3 at least it did that and got them buying nikon lenses instead of canon

  • I think there’s a good possibility that the 60D = 7D…and that when rumors circulate they really refer to the same camera.

  • Not doing any high end stuff, under $1000 weddings, but shooting top notch glass…This camera will become my second camera when I upgrade my prices, and my primary will likely be a 5D2.

  • “The results confirm that the company is able to offset the deterioration of the copier and printer business with its consumer businesses, namely digital cameras,” said J.P. Morgan analyst Hisashi Moriyama.

“Canon’s operating profit was 44.91 billion yen in April-June, down from 160.15 billion yen a year earlier, but up from a 20 billion yen profit in the previous quarter”

So as of July 28, 2009, Canon’s profits are down, yes, but they are posting a 44.91 billion yen profit.

  • I’m waiting for this announcement log time ago.

There are two dates being rumored around 19th and 25th…
What if the 19th is for powershot and 25th for EOS (2000D & 60D)?
or even better does somebody thought about the 19th showing the new powershot and the 2000D & 60D and only the 25th the new 1d’s m4 ?
Canon should take back into the FF cameras market as Sony is being playing around, lately. Seems that the second possibility is my choice :)

The new selphy printer (presented on July) has bluetooth connectivity, so I would expect in this area something related to this feature, and 720p HD video, and maybe a projector to compete with Nikon.

On the other hand, the EOS 2000D is clearly coming with HD video (very likely 720p), due to the digic 4. My guess is that it will have the 230K LCD, and reduced ISO capabilities to avoid overlapping features with the 500D.

I’m waiting for the 60D announcement. I’m not sure that there will be 7D at this time, however canon needs another pro-consumer camera. I’m still a bit confused about canon steps, as the 500D and the 5Dm2 have video with the Digic 4 and the 50D doens’t. This probably was a technical problem here (or they didn’t make it on time? maybe the buffer speed?). So the HD video must happen on this one. I would go for a Digic 5 in this camera. Improved noise reduction, and higher ISO capabilities. I would update the sensor capabilities but maybe not the 15MP. Probably dual card slots would seen here, too. I hope that the AF system gets better.

If this happens, I would upgrade to a 60D very soon :)

  • I think Canon left out HD video on the 50D because they were making a big deal about the 5DII at the time.

  • If I remember correctly, Canon initialy advertised HD video as a pro feature (remember, “destined evolution” ?). But then Nikon integrated HD video in its consumer D90.

It was thus pointless for Canon not to include HD video in its 500D and later bodies. But it was simply too late for the 50D integration.

  • no problem, if light is well controlled.
For example, I would never trust my 40D to have tack-sharp focus in a church. But you can blame me :)

  • The decision to add HD would have been far in advance, clearly Canon chose the 5D to introduce DSLR video, and intends to add it to the rest of the line as the updates come out. From a development standpoint, they would have skipped the 50D and focused video development on the T1i, then 60D, 1D etc.

  • Interesting the perspective differences on video between Canon and Nikon. Canon focused on the pro end first, Nikon on the amature, probably why Nikon is sticking to 720p (mostly a web-youtube target) where Canon is sticking with 1080p (though the T1i barely).

  • Hmm.. I heard from a person selling Canon equipments today. that Canon isnt planning to release 50D successor not until one more year.

But 1D or 1Ds Mk IV(I forgot which one he mentioned 1D or 1Ds) will be released soon sometime this month or next month.

  • the sooner they bring out the 1D IV the better. The Mark III has a really bad rep because of the AF disaster.

  • “Hmm.. I heard from a person selling Canon equipments today. that Canon isnt planning to release 50D successor not until one more year”.

    A “60D” would be a replacement for the 40D, not the 50D.

  • Makes perfect sense, it’s good to have 2 models with different capabilities and at different price points in a given line – see for example 450D and 500D. 40D and 50D are not competing directly with each other – 60D would complement 50D and replace 40D.

  • if I understand you correctly, you do not like 15MP. Having read the threads on the 50D, the 60D surely will have an sRAW 1 feature which enables you shooting @about 7.1 MP, won’t it?

  • 60D would replace the 50D and the 50D would slide down to replace the 40D. Why in the world would the 60D replace a model 2 steps below it? LOL

  • Nothing unusual there. I still shoot weddings 5D Mark II (Which I love) with a 30D as my second unit. Will be upgrading to either a 60D or 1D Mark IV depending on their specs.

  • Sorry, I meant that I would left the 15MP sensor, but maybe with upgrades in another area, like a higher ISO capability or stuff like that.
The bigger you want to plot your images, the more MP you will need.

Anyhow, 19th seems to be the right date. Hope the 60D will be ready for September… Thinking on buying one very fast :)

  • I think that there are many limiting factors that make Nikon’s decisions are more technically correct.

    1. Most photographers are not interested in video (until today ;-).

    2. Most of the TVs around the world, today are HD Ready and not FULL HD (including mine…) , this means that you would not be able to see in their best quality videos in 1920×1080.

    3. The sensors… 15MP vs 12MP. You see that the 500D/T1i has Full HD but not in the rate everyone would expect. I think that Sony’s sensors here will be improving in the next months. As they are also improving their cameras.

    4. The auto/manual focus here is playing a big difference between the two brands, and I see here a key point for Nikon.

    5. Time limit. This is a difficult to overcome factor, as I think that both companies will need to update their real time OSes in the cameras to more than 32bits. This is why there is a time limit or size limit for the files. The second problem is related to the heat up of the sensor and the other elements in the camera. This is not a video camera definitely.

    6. The videos size is also a limiting factor as the CF/SD cards are not increasing too fast their sizes. If you go outside and film many videos in a trip, you will need a bunch of fast cards (which starts to be quite expensive).

The only use that I see to video is just when I want to film something around with the family. Other than that, it is difficult to say, as today HD video cameras have much better capabilities (and lower prices…).

  • Actually a lot TV commercials, documentaries, and indie film projects are using the 5D2 now because it is 1080p 50mbs – definately full HDTV quality. There’s even a music video out with RED 3K, 5D2 and GH1 footage and they all look good. The reason they aren’t using Nikon’s is they are only 720p – fine for web upload or playing home movies on your HDTV, but not for real production.

Canon has clearly targeted pro HD and indie markets with the 5D2. Nikon is not, at this point they are targeting amatures with it.

  • This is one of the factors why Canon is selling fine the 5d2 and the T1i. People says: I prefer to pay a few bucks more and get full HD because is better without knowing that there is no difference in their TVs or PCs.

However, Canon needs to resolve the autofocus limiting issue.

I think that HD video is not bad at all and saves me another few grams in my traveling bag. This is a nice to have feature that it is paying itself for the companies
