  1. Anonymous: there was an announcement on the 25:th. They introduced 27 products, but no EOS cameras or lenses. Sept 1 will be an EOS day for sure.

And the press meeting is official, so the only speculation this far is whether it’s 7D, 60D or something else.

  2. My prediction (unfortunately). The 7D is a ho-hum release. Maybe replacing the 60D with some advanced features (like HD movie) but still on an APS-C platform. $1500-2000, but nothing earth-shaking, unless it is FF (which I doubt).

I believe the 1D rev will happen, later in the year, but will be expensive.

Just a gut-feel from 20+ years being involved in technology launches. There’s just nothing in the buzz to indicate Canon is deviating from their last 24 months of ho-hum releases (excepting maybe the 5d mkii, but even that was evolutionary, not revolutionary).

i.e. don’t expect incredible new gains in AF or cheap FF. I think it’s APS-C with HD movie and maybe a few more bells and whistles. I’m not holding my breath.

  3. 60D would make me happy, since the 50D would likely drop a few hundred bucks. I’m not sure the 60 will be exceptional enough to warrant buying it at release.

  4. I couldn’t believe there’s a company as secretive as Apple. Canon sure gives Apple a run for its money in the tight-lipped department.

  5. APS-C compact (which didn’t happen)

    Affordable FF (sub $2K list)

    Better AF across the lines.

Those three would qualify as game-changers.

  6. It’s about time those 9 AF points became cross-type. If they announce that, most people won’t care, not knowing how huge that would be over what we’re currently using. It’d be nice if they’d carry that over into the 5dmk3 PLUS at least an additional 4 cross-type AF points to make more of a square pattern than diagonal to spread them out for easier rule-of-thirds focusing.

Whatever we see next week will show up in the 5dmk3 in a year, which is what I’m looking forward to.

  7. you may be so right. therefore, i will likely stay with my actual gear. hoping still you are wrong cus i’d love to be surprized by a consumer FF-7d :-)

  8. Hopefully this will not be another P&S or talking printer announcement…

The world is waiting for 7D – a real competitor for Nikon. Nothing else will matter. Nothing else will bring Canon to true leader title in DSLRs. Come on Canon, bring it on!

  9. Or, there’s nothing to get excited about, and it’s just we, ourselves, who are whipping up the frenzy.

  10. Go to a store and shoot the mk2 in low light at ISO6400, then zoom in at 100% on the LCD. Looking through that viewfinder and at the 100% crop on that crisp screen, and you’ll walk home with a maxed credit card and full framer… And, you won’t regret it :)

  12. Everybody is talking about cameras, but what about lenses? Will there be a new prime in the 30-35 mm range? A 24-70 with IS? A new kit lens for the EF-S cameras?

  13. Umm. I don’t think canon comes close to apple. The world stops and watches apple everytime they rease something. They develop products that change the way we live our lives.

  14. OK, everybody can go back to sleep until the 1 September.

Because of the Best Buy leak, we have a pretty good idea about the price of the 7D. I suspect that the price is a BB guess based on a rough estimate from Canon USA. However, I still think that the body price will be between $2400 and $2700 (the 5DMkII price), not between $1500-2000. Therefore, I still see it probably being a 12MP, 8FPS FF Lord of Darkness camera, to compete with the D700.

    See y’all on the first

  15. on the first point you are maybe right: canon has not steve jobs equivalent. so it’s probably not apple.
apple changes lives? i got it. you mean: “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”

  16. what’s about the “NOT FF” tag on the last cr1 spec list. i would hope you being right. i’d pay also a couple of hundred more for it being FF.

  17. I don’t get it. If everyone is waiting for a cheap ff camera, why don’t you get an original 5d? I got a used to as a back up for about 1k sent it to canon for to be reconditioned for about 100 dollars and it’s practly a new camera. Cheaper then 7d 60d 50d etc.

  18. we share the same dreams. but i was told that sometimes dreams may become true if you believe enough in them. all you need is to really, REALLY, want.

  19. you are right, this is actually a very good point. i was allready spotting for good second hand mint condition 5d’s. but then it’s from 2005. that’s older than 4 years man.

  20. I have an original 5D that I ordered two days before the 5D was announced, based on a detailed spec sheet leaked by Canon Spain. It still takes great pictures, even at ISO 3200, and it’s been extremely reliable but it’s a 4 year old camera. Therefore, (1) its focusing speed and accuracy for moving targets need to be improved, especially in low light (2) the frame rate has to be raised to at least 6FPS and (3) the high ISO noise and dynamic range has to be made better than the 2-year-old D700.

  21. i think the news of the announcement comes from a swedish site, isn’t it? and canon has made world wide announcements the last few times. so probaly we will hear it from everywhere (what actually includes stockholm).

  22. And, oh yes, (4) the viewfinder alphanumeric display has to be brightened so that it doesn’t disappear outdoors in bright sunlight.

  23. if you can’t afford a 2700 FF .. a 1999 FF isn’t going to do much for you as far as “game changing”.

especially considering it would be a stripped down 5DII..ie: 90% viewfinder, smaller chassis (similar to Elan series), lower FPS, and same or worse AF .. think FF rebel and you’re close if you want a sub 2K FF.

  24. OMFG. I didn’t realize that the 5dmk2’s AF is actually WORSE than the 40D!!!!!!

Only the center AF point is cross-type in the mk2. Thanks for ruining my day, lol.

  25. It will likely be FF, and tens of thousands of would be FF enthusiasts will flock to it. They will then find that they need longer focal lengths, just to regain the capability they had. Instead of the 55-250mm zoom, they will need a 100-400mm and so on. At minimum, they will want a 17-40mm, a 24-105mm, and a 100-400mm. Those who already own these lenses or similar combinations should be delighted with their foresight, except, if they use 400mm on their crop, now they will need 600mm or even 800mm, and a 1.4X extender will not autofocus with their 100-400mm zoom either.

Good Plan Canon, put a low cost FF camera on the street and rake in the profit on lenses. Everyone will be happy while you laugh all the way to the bank.

Kinda sounds like the way it works with printers and Ink!

  26. there seems to be some hideously bad math going on lately regarding the price of full frame cameras.

D700 is NOT less than $2,000 US.

  27. chill out, and go sell your own girlfriend. then we will see how up-lightened you still are

  28. Hmm, well I think apple never released a product what changed our life’s.

They just presented and sold it in a way that people realised they need that.
Most of their “new” products are based stuff which existed before, made by companies who could not sell like apple can.
Touch screen? Ipod? I saw touch screen computers 15 years before, it even existed in the 60’s.. Ipod? I owned portable mp3 player before… and the list goes on.

  29. That’s only if you can get the AF to work in a condition where you need that high iso…

  30. So by your logic the announcement could be made from Canon US HQ when everyone there is asleep…….

  31. I have no problems with the AF on the 5d2 and I shoot in low light all the time. Heck it focuses as well as my friend’s 1d2 if not better.

  32. The simple solution is to own both a 7D and a 60D. My 5D is my indoor camera and my 40D is my outdoor camera.

  33. I empathize with your indifference. Canon has delivered a whole bunch of lack luster products in the past few years.

But I think the S90 may be Canon’s most exciting compact camera release yet. Hopefully, this may herald a change in Canon’s evolutionary pace for the past few years.

Remember, Nikon was also caught in a rut before the release of their winning D300/D3 combo. And they have nothing much to show this year… so far.

  34. Im betting the 7d is the 60d at 14.4mp at 10fps dual digic 4 or 5 ………………………………………… 1.6 crop LOL

  35. You will not see a Canon version of D700 or D300. Canon would add all the bells and whistles except Pro AF and Pro Build/weatherseals.They might come up with some “word’s first” thingies to distract people but no substitute for D700/D300

  36. no new glass needed for a ff-body. but my old l-optics would appreciate to go on a ff-digital after the eos-3

  37. ZING!

I suppose the high ISO is still good for stopping motion. Instead of ISO1600, f/2.8, 1/20, you could get just as clean or cleaner ISO6400, f/2.8, 1/80. That right there is huge. So, yeah, maybe you don’t get nighttime viewfinder-focusing shooting with the mk2, but well… that’s a pretty fringe case unless you’re a spy.

However, if you *are* in low light, that ISO6400 really gives you an amazing Live View. You can manually focus in those situations, unless the scene is real dynamic.

  38. No, but they are the first who can sell it…

I guess they will introduce a touch screen netbook in the future.
Although it exists for a long time, and windows 7 also supports full touch screen mode, they will sell it 100x more than the others, and everyone will think they invented it.

Microsoft is really stupid regarding this.

  39. Anonymoustache on

Don’t sweat it, it was a funny comment. Some of these cupcakes are just wound way too tight.

  40. I think that I will see 60d=50d+hd video, maybe with better AF and cleaner sensor.

7D?I don’t know. I haven’t seen Canon been this good to costumers before.

    We will see.

  41. I want lenses, give me a 14-24 f/2.8L USM, with the sub-wavelength coating, I’ll buy it guarunteed.

  42. LOL! My gig is up! I am, indeed, just waiting for the new DSLRs, because I fully intend to get a 5d classic when people start dumping there’s. That’s why I need a good new release :-)

  43. Already sent it on April 1st. Didn’t you get it? Oh wait…you’d already spent it all on the banks.

  44. How about a 1D IV as part of a stimulus package? One for every photographer! Keep my health care, give me good AF, high FPS and FF.

  45. Bring it on! C’man Canon. Sell me an affordable FF, and I’ll HAVE to buy more glass. I double-dog dare ‘ya!

  46. So I have a change to buy a 5D Mark II with battery grip today for $2500 with 5,000 actuations. Would you buy it or pass and wait to see what canon comes up with next week?

  47. I would love to see a 24-70 IS, as long as they could keep the weight down. It’s already a huge lens. It would be nice to see a zoom or two in the f2.0 or 1.8 range. Not that the technology is there yet….70-200 2.0L IS would be a dream. Make the IS 5 stops and keep the IQ or improve it.

  48. I guess you don’t shoot landscapes? The FF sensor makes a world of difference with my 17-40. It’s like a whole new lens when it’s on a 5D vs. a 40D.

  49. It’s a crop factor, no focal length extension. So you don’t get more zoom on an aps-c, you just get a smaller field of view than on a ff. If you ned new lenses, it’s because you may have bought ef-s optics.

  50. Actually, you do not need new lens lens when you switch from APS-C to FF, as long as your lens is not EF-S. Remember, you will have more pixel in the FF than the APS-C. so you can always use the center of the image only. This will be just like shooting with the APS-C. Of cause people will argue that this is not FF anymore. That is correct. But even for an excellent 10X8 print, all you need is 6 mp. so you still have plenty of pixels left. Professionals have been using this trick for ages. The above argument is based on the assumption that really good lens ( Canon L lens)is used with your new FF body.

  51. I think you may be right. I may need to have my 20D shutter release button replaced and wait for another couple years. If the 50D was a better camera, my 20D would have been in the junk pile a long time ago.

  52. I’ll be happy when this is all over. In just a few days we know what’s coming and if it was worth the wait. Then we know if Canon took up the fight, or committed Harakiri…..

  53. Im sick of waiting, what did i get in my exams, have the bank got my money back yet… WHAT IS CANON GOING TO RELEASE?!

  54. Definately buy it. I have the same set up and for wedding/portraits it is absolutely perfect. I still have a 30D if I need the extra fps. Mind you if the 7D comes in as speced the the 30D will get replaced but the 5D II will still be my weddings workhorse.
