We think that there will be a “V” series full-frame camera coming from Canon at some point. It will likely be at the lower end of the full-frame line to keep it “affordable” for the target creator market. It would likely be a larger EOS R50 V, which is quite a nice camera.

Canon EOS R8 V

We have seen some articles online regarding the possibility of an EOS R8 V, which would be a full-frame brother to the EOS R50 V.

Using the R8 series for a full-frame V camera would certainly keep it “affordable”.

We have NOT been told anything about an EOS R8 V directly, so this is just reporting what others out there have published. This sort of product is worth a discussion.

Do people want a full-frame V series camera?

What about an EOS R8 Mark II?

The EOS R8 is an extremely popular camera, and a great value full-frame shooter. Having a V series version launched before a Mark II would be good business.

The EOS R8 would continue to be a compelling option, especially if it drops below $1000, which it does during some refurbished sales.

Opinion

I guess this is possible, and it makes more sense to use the EOS R8 over the EOS R6 series to build a V series full-frame camera. I also think an EOS R8 V would make more sense over releasing another V series APS-C camera, like an EOS R7 V.

Again, no one has directly communicated to us that this sort of camera is coming. It seems more of a wishlist than an actual leak

  1. Cautiously excited about this one...The Canon R50V has become my go-to recommendation for content creators who ask what camera they should buy. I actually get asked this several times a month covering events. In fact, I bought one myself and I’ve been genuinely impressed by how well it’s built and how it performs. Especially at this price point, it just makes sense for YouTubers, vloggers, and influencers on a budget. The rolling shutter is...well, not great, but perfectly fine for tripod use. It didn't do very well as a gimbal real estate camera because of this, sadly.

While I haven’t personally needed a dedicated camera for this type of work, I can easily see the R50V being a great choice for a top-down rig or as a second/third angle. That said, I still wish Canon would add C-Log3 to the R10, which I also own.

If Canon releases an R8V, I’d love to see C-Log2 included and not just C-Log3. The hype around that format is definitely justified for my workflow. I sold my C70 with the hope that the R1 would replace it and, for me, it absolutely has. My only remaining frustration is with the obvious lack of internal ND filters. Every variable ND I’ve tried still comes with trade-offs. But (and I may catch some heat for saying this)… the R1 and R5 Mark II have both proven to be better video cameras for me than the C70 ever was. The C70 image is incredibly soft and never matched well with my previous B camera, the R3. The footage also doesn't do very well with punching in for tighter crops. When shooting side-by-side with the R3, the C70 almost looked out of focus because the 4K image is that soft compared to the downsampled 6K on the R3 and now the R1.

Sorry this was so wordy! haha
  2. I enjoy using the R50V a lot, my kids like it as well. But I'd sell it in a heartbeat if an R8V becomes available. Like @LSXPhotog says above, the rolling shutter is "not great". I'm pretty much ES only on the R5II and R8, having that on a really compact R body would be great.

I would appreciate if Canon came out with an EL-100 size flash with the new fangled hot shoe interface and if DJI would release their hot-shoe receiver not just for Sony, but also for Canon.

I would not take this rumor seriously: The source is the New Camera, a site that consciously publishes incorrect data and does not correct it when their errors are brought to their attention.
  4. 10 years ago this would've kept me in the Canon camp. When I was dreaming about a full-frame alternative of the EOS-M family. Still a right move; hope they do it right.
  5. It\'s hard to compete with ZV-E1 if there\'s no clog2... Maybe time for clog4?
Has ibis, higher iso, but low res stills, no mechanical shutter, no cooling fan, worse lcd screen...they all have advantages and drawbacks.
  6. Very intriguing! Make it small, make it good, give me an attachable EVF, and I'm in! :)
I would be thrilled with an EVF attachment too. I still can't 100% commit to just having a back screen for photography and even videography to some extent.

Well where's the fun in that! It would be very cool if they did come out with something like this. A lot more companies are getting hyper aggressive in the video space because its importance is growing rapidly. I had honestly lost all hope with something even like the R50V coming out.

The attachable EVF ala M6II, etc. is a surprising thing missing so far. I guess it makes sense if the purpose is video-centric. But I was really surprised that they didn’t introduce one as an optional accessory when the R50V was rolled out.

I have one for the M6II and haven't used it in years, but on the R50V I keep eyeing the RF100-400 and RF100L and wanting an EVF. For the STM primes I don't want or need one, but for macro and tele-zooms, it does have a place.

It's essential for the telezooms unless you are using a tripod.
  11. I would be delighted to upgrade my R8 to the next version. My only request is IBIS. Without IBIS, I have no reason to upgrade it...
I'd like IBIS as well, but not at the expense of making the camera a lot thicker.
  12. I think what Canon needs is something to compete with the upcoming FX3 replacement, Nikon ZR and Panasonic S1H II.
A Canon R5C type camera with nd's and the R1 sensor. Even without nd's but something small and good that can take stills (unlike the C80) and it doesn't have to have the noisier 45mpx sensor, 24mpx is enough for a video oriented hybrid. Like an R1 but not as tall and with a better screen mechanism where it doesn't interfiere with the HDMI port. A removable tilting EVF would also be a nice plus
  13. I'd like IBIS as well, but not at the expense of making the camera a lot thicker.
Yes. But I have seen lots of 'thin' cameras with IBIS. I believe it is possible to add IBIS without a noticeable increase in size or weight. I am willing to pay a bit more.
  14. Canon and Sony too, need to stop slow walking technology. Stacked sensors are over a decade or two old now. Yet Canon and more so Sony have milked the technology. Canon has stated long ago that it would "roll out the stacked sensors". Yet they have basically done a 180 and chosen to "milk it". Before anyone tries to convince the world that SOCs and stacked devices are soooooooo expensive, save it. They are everywhere else, in cheaper electronic devices. Even in the G7X mk III. Well, enough already. Cameras are already niche devices. Roll out the stacked sensors Canon. Stop milking it.
